Gables Youth Joins Navy
Glenn Frederick Jones, 1918 Red Road, has enlisted in the U. S. Navy, according to an announcement yesterday by Guy F. Hull, Miami recruiting officer. Jones has been sent to Macon, Ga., for final examination and from there will be transferred to the Navy Training Station in Norfolk, Va., for six weeks fundamental training for a Navy career. On completion of his training he will be granted leave to visit his parents. On his return from his leave, Jones will enter a trade school of his selection if he is successful in passing examinations. NO MORE HAMMOCKS The days of sleeping in the swinging hammock are over, as far as the majority of Uncle Sam's sailors are concerned. Most of the new ships are outfitted with steel bunks which, when not used, fold against the casemate, or wall. LIBRARIES ON SHIPS Sailors in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve do not lack for reading facilities. Practically every ship is outfitted with a complete library where members of the crew can read for either relaxation or study. A Royal Portable at no cost to you. See this issue.
"NAV-INTELLIGENCE"
Is it necessary to be a high school graduate in order to enlist in the Navy? No. Navy enlistees need not be high school graduates. All applicants will be given an examination containing approximately 100 questions. A grade of 50 per cent or better on this examination is sufficiently high to pass the Navy educational standards. However, a high school education will be valuable to the seaman during his Navy enlistment. If I enlist in the Navy or Naval Reserve, will I be sent to a Navy Trade School? All new recruits are sent to one of four Naval Training Stations and after a training period they may take examinations for entrance into Navy Trade Schools. Those recruits who pass their examinations with sufficiently high grades are sent to Navy Trade Schools before assignment to the fleet. While attending these schools, they will receive regular Navy pay and free schooling valued at $1500. What is the greatest possible pay I can expect to earn during my first term of enlistment? It is possible to earn as much as $126 a month by the end of your first term of enlistment, and remember that your clothing, lodging, medical and dental care are all supplied free. After I have served my term of enlistment, what benefits do I get for re-enlistment? Depending on your rate and length of service, you can get a cash bonus up to $300 plus 30 days leave with pay. What does the term "ash can" mean in the Navy? An "ash can" is a slang term applied to the depth charge used to combat submarines. The average "ash can" is a container filled with approximately 300 pounds of T.N.T. and can be dropped overboard from a ship and so controlled as to explode at depths ranging from 36 to 300 feet. These are generally carried by the fast ships of the fleet, as a boat dropping a charge regulated to explode at 50 feet depth must move away from the explosion area at a speed of 25 knots or more. These "ash cans" are either rolled off the stern or shot from "y-guns" which hurl one right and one left simultaneously.
Inca Woman Has Quiet Dignity Inherited From Her Forebears
Indian serving women are employed in leading hotels in Quito, skytop capital city of Ecuador, which for a time was connected with Cuzco of the vast and fabulously wealthy Inca Empire. The Indian serving woman has the quiet dignity which characterized her ancestors who belonged that that amazing empire which flourished for four centuries before the white man's arrival in South America. There was no poverty among the Indians in those days. They lived in a well advanced state of civilization and were engaged in honorable, dignified occupations. They raised crops; mined gold and silver and from it fashioned figures, vases and ornaments of exceptional workmanship; they made pottery of amazing form and design; they raised flocks, spun the wool and made their own clothes, and they were remarkable engineers, stone masons and builders. Examples of their skill are seen on every hand by travelers visiting the Land of the Incas on the 38-Day Peru Cruises from New York. The Inca regime was a despotism yet paternal in the extreme. The cultivated land was worked on the collective principle with one-third for the state, one-third for the Priesthood of the Sun, and one-third for the people. There was no coinage—the gold and silver belonged to the state. All who were able were engaged in some type of work. In return the state provided, more or less generously, for the material comforts of the people, and also cared for the very young, the sick and the infirm. The position of the Indians today is a far cry from what it was before their empire fell. Yet they have maintained, through all their trials and tribulations, a calm reserve which we might well emulate. MINIMUM AGE The minimum age limit for enlistment in the U. S. Navy is 17. All applicants under 21 years will be required to have the consent of their parents or guardians. ENLISTEES HONORED Many of the destroyers in the U. S. Navy are named in honor of enlisted men who are remembered for outstanding acts of bravery. A record of the service rendered by the individual for whom a ship is named is emblazoned on a plaque mounted on the ship and a duplicate of each plaque hangs on the wall of Luce Hall in the United States Naval Academy.
More Selectees Leave in November
One thousand three hundred and fifteen selectees were called for service in Florida this week by Brigadier - General Vivian Collins and will be sent to Camp Blanding in November. White selectees number 1,082, to be inducted between November 3 and 12. The Negro total is 233, to be called up November 14-17. As in previous calls, Miami (Dade County) leads the fleet with a quota of 230 whites. Duval is second with 161 and Hillsborough third with 112. Three counties were exempted—Pasco, Citrus and Okaloosa. LIKE GIRLS Sixty enthusiastic English Flying Cadets stationed at the Naval Air Base in Jacksonville, when questioned as to what they liked best about America, replied, "American girls." NOW DEPUTIES County and state highway patrolmen are "qualified deputy sheriffs" in counties where they make arrests, permitting sheriffs to collect their statutory fees even if arrested persons are carried before peace justices, Attorney General Watson ruled. Sermon Topic Announced The sermon topic of the Rev. Carlock Hawk, pastor of the First Methodist Church, at 11 A. M., Sunday, will be "Our Greatest Task." The three Epworth Leagues will meet at 6:30 P. M. in the church. Sunday school will convene at 9:45 A.M. GET MORE PAY In addition to the base pay received by enlisted men in the U. S. Navy and Naval Reserve, men receive additional pay for certain types of work or honors received. For example, a seaman awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross or Navy Cross, receives $2 extra a month; gun captains receive $2 to $5 a month extra; mail clerks, $10 to $20 a month extra; expert riflemen or expert pistol shots, $3 more a month; sharpshooters, $1 extra per month; divers $10 to $20 extra each month, etc. ROOKIE CALLED "BOOT" A "rookie" in the U. S. Navy is called a "boot." He is ranked as an apprentice seaman and receives $21 a month besides board, clothing and equipment. After four (4) months he automatically becomes a seaman second class and his pay is raised to $36 a month. FOUR TRAINING POINTS There are four Naval Training Stations where naval recruits are trained before going aboard ship or entering one of the trade schools. They are at Newport, R. I.; Great Lakes, Ill.; Norfolk, Va., and San Diego, Cal.
