"NAVY TRADE TRAINING GAVE ME MY START" SAYS PRESIDENT, SPERRY CORPORATION
THOMAS A. MORGAN (pictured in insert), president of the Sperry Corporation, world's largest manufacturers of aeronautical and marine instruments, received his early technical training in the U. S. Navy, in which he enlisted as a young man. "This has proved of great value to me in later years," said ex-sailor Morgan. Pictured above are new Navy recruits receiving electrical training at one of the modernly equipped Navy Trade Schools. The Navy offers training to young men in nearly 50 different trades and vocations.
Selectees Should Be Given Old Jobs Back, Says Gen. Collins
Selective service registrants who are rejected at Army induction centres because they do not meet Army physical standards should be reinstated in their former jobs, Brig.-Gen. Vivian Collins, State Director of Selective Service declared today, instructing all local boards to utilize every facility at their disposal to aid these men. Pointing out that the Selective Training and Service Act requires former employers to reinstate men inducted into the nation's armed forces who satisfactorily complete their military training, the General asserted that employers likewise have a moral obligation to reinstate former employes who were not actually inducted but who had patiently answered a call for service. He said: "A man who responds to the call for military training is fulfilling his obligation to his country. When, for some reason beyond his control, he cannot be inducted into the nation's armed forces, he must be considered as having discharged his responsibility under the law and should be protected in doing so Every effort must be made to prevent hardship in such cases." General Collins emphasized that the mere fact that a selectee has been rejected by the Army does not mean that he is physically unfitted for his civilian occupation. Army standards, he pointed out, are very exacting due to requirements of the training program and the possible hospitalization or pensions for those who break down. For those reasons, he iterated, only a comparatively small percentage of eligibles can qualify for induction. While State Selective Headquarters is advised that most Florida employers are reinstating rejected selectees in their former jobs, the Director said, the Selective Service System wants to make certain that none are treated unjustly. Re-employment committeemen affiliated with Florida local boards, he announced, will aid rejected selectees as assiduously as they are assisting returning soldiers to obtain employment. Florida local boards also were instructed by the Director to warn all registrants ordered to report for induction to arrange their affairs so as to prevent undue personal hardship should they be rejected at Army induction centers. Local boards, he said, should advise registrants that when they are notified of their call they should point out to their employers the possibility that they may not be accepted at the induction station. "The employer en then be prepared to regain the man if he is rejected," the Generl aserted, "or to continue his employment if he is rejected." General Collins also suggested that any selectee who is rejected by the Army immediately notify his employer of the rejection.
POPULAR HOBBY
One of the most popular hobbies of sailers in the U. S. Navy and Naval Reserve is that of collecting "covers" from the battleships that maintain their own post offices. Several Naval magazines devote regular departments to stamp collections.

State Patrolmen Check Licenses
State Safety Director Gilliam, chief of the Florida Highway patrol, announced this week that instructions have been issued to all state patrolment to begin checking up on motorists to see that all have secured their new drivers' licenses. A special staff of 100 patrolment is being organized to instruct drivers and conduct examinations of all who have not secured licenses, while they will also be charged with checking all motorists and requiring those who have not obtained new licenses to do so immediately. A temporary term of grace has been extended, which will permit drivers with old licenses to secure new ones without the necessity of undergoing examination, but Gilliam warned that this is only temporary and those wishing to avoid the examination will do well to secure their new cards immediately, as the new examining force will be ready to begin its work shortly.
