Merchants Near Goal For Xmas

Confidence that a pool of approximately $800 will be raised by local merchants to decorate the streets and stage a Christmas Festival, was expressed yesterday by Andrew Houston, chairman of the Merchant's Bureau. The collections, under Chairman S. B. Giffen, are coming along very nicely with the majority of the local business people giving all they can", Houston said. "Only in a few cases have we found merchants who refuse to cooperate." Programs of the Christmas plans will be reported on at a meeting at 12:15 today at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Every person engaged in business in the community is urged to attend.

Country Club Golf Title To Mrs. Raymond

Mrs. R. B. Raymond defeated Mrs. Mark Erwin, 5 and 4 to win the Country Club of Coral Gables' annual woman's golf tournament. Mrs. Raymond now has two legs on the coveted silver cup. One more championship and the cup is hers. Mrs. Carl Green defeated Mrs. Tommy Hand 4 and 3 to win the first flight. Mrs. Douglas Gahr defeated Mrs. Marion Markowitz, 1 up in the championship consolation. Mrs. John Bostwick defeated Mrs. W. B. Reilly 2 and 1 to win the first flight consolation. The handsome trophies now on display in Douglas Atkinson's golf office will be awarded a above winners and all runner-up at a banquet and dance Nov. 8 at the club. Round Table Resumes The Civic Round Table will resume meetings at 12:15 p. m. today at the Country Club of Coral Gables.

Slate Re-Election Of Miller As Country Club President

The unopposed nomination of F. Boyce Miller to succeed himself as president of the Country Club of Coral Gables was announced yesterday. Miller's election will be confirmed at the annual election, slated for November 10, at which time three new directors will also be named. Nominated for the directorships are Lawson Cheatham, G. J. Eckstrom, D. H. Gahr, M. B. Garris, Dr. S. Hill Gordon and John Halifax. Retiring directors include Frank N. Holley, Jr., William Merriam, Dr. L. D. Pankey and Wendell Sumner. Holdover directors are W. L. Gray, Jr., Wiley M. Sams, MacGregor Smith, Andrew Houston, Stuart Padton and D. V. Renuart. The club is rounding out its sixth year as a popular rendezvous for Coral Gables citizens. Since its incorporation in October, 1935, the club has progressed steadily, continually expanding its facilities and now offers a well-rounded program of sports and entertainment for its members. The sports program available to club members includes golf on the Granada golf course, tennis, swimming in the Venetian Pool and ping pong at the club house. The entertainment program includes weekly dances, bridge and numerous special events. In December 1940 the club management took over the operation of the kitchen and din-ing room, which prior to that time, had been operated by an independent concessionaire. Under the supervision of Victor Muzii, this service of the club has been improved to the point where luncheons and dinners are served regularly. Practically every civic club in the community makes the Country Club its headquarters and using it for regular meetings are the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Optimists, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Merchants Bureau, Business and Professional Women's Club and the Civic Round Tables. In addition a large part of the University of Miami's social program takes place at the club. During the past fiscal year many improvements have been made in the club building and tant was the painting of the the entire exterior of the building and the erection of a large din-ing terrace with a permanent tile roof. The entire kitchen has been painted and renovated and considerable new errfigera-tion and cooking equipment added. Miller, the re-elected president, has been a resident of Coral Gables since January, 1931, having come from Galien, Ohio. He resides at 427 Avenue Aledo with his wife an dyonng son, Freddie. Miller is a graduate of Culver Military Academy and later attended Ohio State University. He is a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and is associated with the firm of Robert M. Cook and Company in Miami.
