PAGE 2 THE CORAL GABLES RIVIERA FRIDAY, OCT. 31, 1941
The classic dessert to serve after a grill dish when you are entertaining—cheese and wine which have a natural affinity. The "dessert" wine may be Muscatel, Tokay or Port and the "dessert" cheese Camembert, Brie or the red-coated round discs of semi-soft cheese native to this country.
Jersey hat in three tone sand bag to match make an effective ensemble, as worn here. The draped hat features a peaked crown and back drape so popular this year with a strand of gold beads as an added fillip. The huge zipper bag is tri-toned and shirred to match the hat. (John-Frederics Ensemble).
Quick change accessories transform your costume from day time to date time. Switch to a kid belt and twin bracelet ensemble like the one here, when you remain in town for dinner after a shopping tour. They add a new gay note to your fall frock. (Barra Gloves and Accessories).
Beautiful, blonde Mrs. Walter Thornton whose husband heads the famous New York model agency, knows the secret of dramatizing her beauty by the hats she wears. This advance John Frederics style proves how a hat can envelop the head and frame the face, at the same time revealing the hair. Its double brim of pink brushed jersey over black felt may be worn in different ways. Mrs. Thornton sets the pace for the famous models her husband directs—she herself never appears in public without a hat.
In the Women's World
CBS stars are all prepared for the day of hobgoblins 'n witches, in fact, they've planned a party for them this Hallowe'en. Here you see Richard ("Bright Horizon") Kollmer, Lesley ("The Man I Married") Woods and ace news announcer George Bryan getting a preview of the special party table set by Carole Stupell. The orange and black color theme of Hallowe'en is carried out even to the refreshments. The round dishes are shaped like pumpkins and filled with orange sections and prunes, bordered by orange flowers. The cakes ae frosted with dark chocolate and orange icing. The glasses have dark borders and the orange cornucopias spill out black grapes, oranges and bananas. Incidentally, for such a table, you don't have to buy special orange plates or glassware. Take up a paint brush and some water colors and decorate your plain white dishes.
STRAIGHT FROM NEW YORK
SLEEVES ARE NEWS Fall dresses are distinguished by their sleeves which represent a wide variety of style choice. There are dolman sleeves, slit sleeves, bishop sleeves, sleeves hanging full from below the shoulder to wrist, and there are bell sleeves. Your dress is as new as its sleeves. Shown is a New York creation with the dolman sleeve, outlined with insets of brick red, on a clay green wool frock.

Hats Provide A Subtle Key To Loveliness
Hats are hats again, thank goodness! The designers have been good to us. They've given us tools so that no matter how short or long our nose, how pudgy or bony our neck, how beautiful or cross-eyed our orbs—all we have to do is go out and buy the right hat, and presto—all our faults are concealed, all our beauty revealed. Something like that, anyway. The point is, hats have brims to shield those dark circles, if that's our difficulty. If we have a receding chin, there's a hat that pulls it out and makes it the hair is streaked and unmanlook positively dominating. If ageable, there are hats with back drapery to cover all those straggly ends. Hat Complements Figure To make it simpler, here's a general idea of how we can make the most of ourselves simply by buying a new hat: First of all, remember we have a body as well as a head, and see that the hat complements our figure as well as our face. It's best to stand up and peer into a full-length mirror when buying a hat. Second, hats and hair-dos should go together. If our new hat calls for a new style of dressing the hair, okay—we'll do it a ney way. Probably do us good to change. Third, think of color. There's nothing we can add to our costume which will bring out the natural skin coloring so much as a hat. So—if skin and hair are inclined to be drab, avoid black an dgrays which will only emphasize the drabness. Choose a hat to dramatize either by repitition or contrast the color of the eyes or the natural under. tone of the skin. Watch the Silhouette Now, take the silhouette as a whole. Short women look well in hats with upward, heightening lines, but height in the hat should not be exaggerated to draw attention to the small stature. Tall women can wear wide brims better than any other group. Their brims should be wide at back as well as at front and sides, to frame a long neck. A little uneveness in brim is usually good, to break the straight lines.
Diary of a Beauty Authority
This is the fourth in a series of articles by Helena Rubinstein, world famous beauty authority, offered as a special feature to women readers of The Riviera. NEW YORK—Some people can read character by handwriting. Others offer to tell you all about yourself by the color of your eyes or the shape of your nose, the lines in your palms, the stars of your birthday. A reading, and almost everyone has a favorite method of deciding, at first acquaintance what another person is really like. I have often found the key to a woman's personality in the fragrance she chooses to wear, for perfume is as personal as a love-letter, and instantly reveals a woman's temperament and way of doing things. I could close my eyes in a roomful of women, and my nose would tell me the different types of women who were present. The fresh outdoor scent of apple blossom, for instance, immediately identifies for me, a woman who is completely feminine, a little on the helpless side—fond of decorating and fashions, gardening and hostessing. The exotic fragrance of orchid perfume calls to my mind the picture of a chic, sophisticated woman who has travelled widely and whose conversation is well worth listening to. Because perfume is such an important personality accent, it should be selected with the utmost care. Age is a foremost consideration in selecting perfume. A young girl should never use heavy scents, nor should the average woman over 50. There are, of course, occasional exceptions. Sarah Bernhardt loved exotic perfumes an dused them to the day of her death, when she was past 70. Her personality was so extremely vital and youthful that anything else would have been out of harmony. Imagine the immortal Bernhardt using lavender! Hair coloring should be left out entirely, in selecting perfumes, otherwise all blondes would 'confine themselves to rose and violet scents, and all brunettes would wear heavy Oriental fragrances. There are many blondes who are just as vigorous in temperament and coloring as brunettes and many brunettes whose delicate beauty is far better suited to floral scents than to heavy musk odors. The best key to the right perfume is, of course, temperament and personality. Thus, if a woman is tall and slender, likes in fashions; if she plays and loves dark colors and slinky golf well and loves to dance, then she should choose a sophisticated, gala perfume. If, on the other hand, she is the tailored, conservative type who believes simplicity is the essence of chic, and if she shies away from modern art and furniture, then she should wear a well-bred, subtly appealing town perfume. Or, if she is a natural wholesome beauty who is happiest when she is wearing tweeds or a riding-habit, then her perfume is a woody country fragrance. Two important rules to remember in applying perfume are: perfume from the inside-out. Do not daub perfume on a dress or handkerchief. Spray the hair, the skin, the lingerie. Second—become a devotee of the atomizer. If you would like to receive Madame Rubinstein's Perfume Personality Chart, you can do so by addressing your request to Helena Rubinstein, in care of this paper. Questions regarding your skin problems will also be answered personally by Madame Rubinstein. Ponce P.-T. A. Head, Mrs. Coker, Chooses Pecan Torte as Pet Recipe
When Mrs. James Coker meets a new friend, she usually gains a pet recipe for her collection of unusually good recipes. Being the wife of a telephone executive, Mrs. Coker has traveled a bit over the country and in every place, they have been stationed she picks up a few good new ideas in food cookery. Just now and incidentally the Cokers are rejoicing with their son James Coker student at Gordon Military Preparatory school at Barnesville, Ga. over his appointment to the school paper, (the Gordon Reville) as business manager. Mrs Coker is a native of Barnesville, S.C. ,but the recipe she contributes today to the Riviera's food page is one she received from a Canadian lady she met on her travels. It is called "Pecan Torte" and Mrs. Coker says, in serving this delicious tid-bit, it may be split and filled with ice cream for an extra special party desert, or when made with almond flavoring and almond nuts. 3⁄4 cup sugar 1⁄2 cup butter 4 egg yolks 1 teaspoon any kind of flavoring (vanilla preferred) 3 tablespoons cold water 1 cup plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder Mix as cake and pour into greased pan. Beat the 4 egg whites stiff and add in cup of sugar and 1⁄2 cup pecan nuts broken in pieces. Spread over mixture and bake 350 degrees for 45 minutes. This makes a very crunchy meringue top and a delicious torte.
