Century Club to Open Season With Annual Thanksgiving Eve Dance

Richard, Jr., two, and Linda Louise, three, pictured here (Murnor Photo) are the attractive children of Capt and Mrs. Richard W. Vinal, who are now living in New York, where Capt. Vinal is piloting planes in the Atlantic fleet for Pan American Airways. Until last week the Vinals lived at 1200 Alhambra Circle and Linda Louise, who was born in San Francisco and Richard, Jr., "Bu" (born in Miami) have done their share of flying, but not nearly as much as little Polly Scott, four, and the eldest of the trio of young daughters of Capt. and Mrs. L. T. Scott, (the others are Midge, two, and Bonnie, eight months) also Pan American fliers, now occupying the Vinal house. When Polly was but one month old she flew with her parents to Rio; before she was five months she had flown 15,000 miles, probably holds a world record. * * * Little Mary Margaret Johnston was just two Wednesday, so her mother, Mrs. Thomas Johnston, invited a score of her little friends in to celebrate. A Thanksgiving theme was used in birthday cake and decorations. * * * Miss Virginia Witters, daughter of Mrs. Laura M. Witters, is announcing today the plans for her wedding to William Thomas Ellington, which will take place Thanksgiving night. The vows will be spoken at 7:30 p. m. at the Coral Gables Methodist Church. Dr. W. H. McMaster of the University faculty will officiate. Dr. McMaster is an old family friend. He was president of Mt. Union College, Alliance, O., when Mrs. Witters' cousin Dean Bowman was dean there. Mrs. A. James Hickland will be her sister's matron of honor. Mrs. Charles Mitchell and Miss Beth Ann Cushman will be bridesmaids. Lieut. Arthur Witters, brother of the bride-to-be, will give the bride away and Prentiss Peabody will be best man. Ushers will be Robert Heil and Mr. Hickland. Mr. Witters and Mr. Ellington will arrive Wednesday from Camp Blanding where they are stationed and Mr. Peabody from Georgia Tech, at Atlanta. * * * Coral Gables will be adding another important woman's club group to its lists with the forming of the "Opti-Mrs." club in the near future. The initial party will be a ten o'clock breakfast, (date to be announced) at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Mrs. John V. Hardeman, as wife of the president of the newly formed Coral Gables Optimist Club will act as temporary chairman. Ed Keuling, international extension director, will address the group. * * * British cadets had their first taste of "Thanksgiving" dinner last night when entertained by several Coral Gables hostesses. Choosing the 20th as their day were Mrs. Fred McNee and Miss Hilda Kay who entertained six cadets of the R. A. F. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Twyman of 1830 S. W. 23rd St. who entertained four. * * * H. Lamont Sillcocks, well known Gables artist and photographer has been mentioned in the annual "Who's Who in Pictorial Photography for 1942". Mr. Sillcocks was one of only five Floridians and the only one from Coral Gables mentioned for the honor. * * * A former Coral Gables resident and member of the Junior Woman's Club, Mrs. Joseph A. Lopez, Jr., is being entertained informally since her arrival from San Juan, Puerto Rico for a visit with Mrs. W. O. Mehtens, of Beacom Manor. The attractive Mrs. Thomas L. Roberts, continues to be feted since her arrival for a two weeks visit with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Peebles of 621 Alhambra Circle. Mrs. G. G. Lee will entertain today with a small luncheon for the visitor. Mrs. James A. Coker gave a luncheon yesterday. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Malcolm B. McDonald honored Mrs. Roberts with a small tea and on Monday Mrs. Edward Grout gave a "coke" party at her home in Messina Avenue. * * * "Mike" Joyce Culley's prize goose was a star in his own right Saturday morning, for he was the only "actor" called on location for that day. Mike who acts under the name of "Lucille" in the forthcoming picture "Here Come the Marines" filmed in Coral Gables by the Colonnade Pictures Corporation, Nov. 21st his stride and flying act in the picturesque setting of the Miami River at the foot of S. W. Third Avenue. Under the watchful and coaching eye of her manager he obeyed every command with camera men grinding away his antics. The picture will have its premiere in late December.

Many Parties Will Precede Dance at Biltmore

Using a "Harvest Home" theme for the buffet they will give, Mr. and Mrs. Edward H. Goodrich will entertain at one of the larger parties preceding the Century Club's Thanksgiving Eve dance next Wednesday at the Miami Biltmore Country Club. This final fall party of the Century Club will inaugurate the schedule of entertainments, which include dinners, dances, and member's meetings beginning with the Thanksgiving dance and continuing through the Easter ball. Mr. and Mrs. Goodrich will be host at the club to Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Robertson, Major and Mrs. Davis H. Estill, Mr. and Mrs. Louis K. Manley, Dr. and Mrs. Harold Nelson, Miss Virginia Goodrich, Fred Dieselhorst, Mr. and Mrs. S. Earle Giffen, Major and Mrs. Stephen J. Delanoy, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Belinsky, Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Moore and Dr. and Mrs. William W. Davies, guests, who have recently joined the naval colony of residents in Coral Gables. Dr. Davies is attached to medical corps at Opa Locka. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle D. Holcomb and Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Graves will entertain at cocktails preceding the dance at the latter's home on Brickell Avenue. Seated at their table will be Mr. and Mrs. Alpheus Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Bradbury Barnes, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ralsten, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Morrison, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Lanford, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Page, Dr. Gail Chandler and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard K. Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Frank O. Headley who have just returned from the Carolina mountains and New York will be hosts to a large table of members including, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Murrell, Mr. and Mrs. G. Seward Foster, Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Deming, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Killian, Dr. and Mrs. Homer J. Rhode, Dr. and Mrs. Samuel G. Grant, Mrs. Edward Brawley, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Rines, Mr. and Mrs D. F. Redfearn, and Mrs. Ethel Ernest. Mrs. Frank B. Race will be host at a table for ten guests, also Mr. and Mrs. John E. Norman, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Hodge will be hosts for a table of 20 members. Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Cordes will have 20 members at their table; Mr. and Mrs. James F. Ireland, 20; and Dr. and Mrs. W. G. Sanchez will have twelve at their table. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony J. Daino will honor Mrs. W. S. Wagner their house guest from New York at their table for 20 members. Dr. and Mrs. George C. Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Gorton will entertain Dr. and Mrs. H. A. Lazzari of South Red Road, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hilles, Judge and Mrs. Mitchell D. Price, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Brunstetter, Mr. and Mrs. J. Harry Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Cyril A. Vivian and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Wait, new residents of Coral Gables. Making up a table are Mr. and Mrs. Phil Laurence and dinner and Mrs. J. T. Larue, who will be hosts to Dr. and Mrs. William H. Wingfield Webster who will arrive the morning of the party from their summer home in Blowing Rock, will be seated with Mayor and Mrs. Clifford Reeder, A. L. Reynolds, Miss Helen Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Frazier and Sen. and Mrs. Ernest Graham. Other members making up parties of ten include Mr and Mrs. Marvin D. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Sullivan, Dr. and Mrs. Joseph S. Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Cesarano and many others.

Pen Women's First Branch Breakfast Takes Place Today at Biltmore

Inaugurating the social activities and open attendance of the Miami branch, National League of American Pen Women, is the first breakfast of the branch year, which will be held at 12:30 p. m. today at the Miami Biltmore Country Club. The breakfasts are held the third Friday of the month during the season at the Biltmore Hotel and are looked forward to with a great deal of interest by the league's pen women and their friends. Mrs. Charles J. Daugherty, president of the Miami branch will preside at this first meeting. Mrs. David Koger, program and contact chairman will present the chairman of the day, Mrs. William A. Lawrence (Natalie Grimes Lawrence) playwright and author. Mrs. Lawrence has arranged a program including Ralph J. Murray, English instructor at the University of Miami who will speak on "American Fiction Wends Its Way". Mrs. Charlotte Hager, student in the school of music at the University and a member of the Symphony orchestra will play several violin selections, accompanied by Miss Edith Adams a member of the University's band. Greeting guests at the door will be Mrs. Clifton Doll Benson, social courtesy chairman and her committee.

Club Members Hear Reports And Book Review

Approximately $150.00 was cleared at the Coral Gables Woman's club recent bridge party according to Mrs. Jack Schmidt, general chairman, who made the announcement at the first business meeting of the group Monday afternoon. The party, the only benefit one the club will give this season was held at the Miami Biltmore Country Club. Mrs. Charles J. Susong, presided at the meeting. Mrs. A. B. Morrison read the collect of the Club Women of America. Reports from the secretary, Mrs. Ernestine Tylee and the treasurer, Mrs. George Henry, were read. Mrs. Evan D. Roser, gave a report on the latest action of the club versus the city regarding the club property. Mrs. George Estill, Dade County chairman of surgial dressings for the Red Cross gave an interesting talk, preceding the book review by Mrs. I. M. Weinstein, who reviewed the book, "Amazon Throne" by Bettina Harding. Mrs. Weinstein was presented by Mrs. Charles Wadsworth Francis, chairman of the literature study group. Mrs. W. Dickey Oglesby, chairman of reception and her committee, Mrs. Upton C. Ewing, Mrs. George Kinsman, Mrs. Richard Oelkers, Jr., Mrs. J. A. Estes and Mrs. E. L. Griffith were hostesses.

Young People's Choir Will Give "Ruth"

The sacred cantata "Ruth" by Palmer Gaul will be presented by the Young People's Choir of Tamiami Temple Methodist Church at 7:30 p. m. Sunday, Nov. 30th at the church, S. W. Eighth street at 14th avenue, under the direction of Mrs. E. R. Treverton, organist. Soloists for this beautiful cantata at the Vesper Service will be Donald Bundock, bass-baritone; Mrs. W. W. Davies, soprano; Mrs. J. W. (Beatrice) Hiest, contralto and Mrs. Alfred Musella, 2nd soprano. The public is invited.

SERMON TOPIC ANNOUNCED

"The Spirit of Thanksgiving" is the subject of the sermon chosen by the Rev. Carlock Hawk for the 11 o'clock service Sunday at the Methodist Church. The Sunday school will meet at 9:45 a. m. and the three departments of the Epworth League at 7 p. m.

To Be Honored at Reception

More than 50 new members of the Coral Gables Junior Woman's club will be honored at the annual membership tea, from 3:30 till 5 p. m., Monday, at the home of Mrs. Derby Thomas, 3700 Alhambra court. Mrs. S. Hill Gordon, membership chairman, will greet the guests at the door and Mrs. Dana C. Melendon club president; Mrs. G. G. Lee Jr., club sponsor; and Mrs. Thomas will form the receiving line. Mrs. Dana Melanson is general chairman of arrangements. Her assistants include Mrs. Stanley Hall and Mrs. H. R. McDonald, Jr., who are in charge of the tea, and Mrs. E. C. Hodge, chairman of punch. Aides include Mrs. Benjamin Turner, Mrs. E. A. Laymon, Mrs. Gordon Walters, and Mrs. Louis Hax Smith. Mrs. John M. Montgomery and Mrs. James B. Moore will pour. Coral, green and white, used in gladioli, chrysanthemum and rose will be the colors used at the informal party. Officers, including Mrs. W. O. Mehrtens, Mrs. H. G. Lesley, Miss Ruth Doughty, Mrs. John Halifax, Mrs. Willett Stubbs, Mrs. Donald E. Johnson and Mrs. Lee will act as hostesses. Preceding the tea, a board meeting will be held at 2:45 p. m., at the home of Mrs. Thomas.
