In the Women's World
This brown herringbone suit, worn by songstress Vera Lane, combines the latest fashion features for tailored suits. The jacket has the new novelty patch pockets, small lapels and hand-stitched self-buttons. Notice the slim-lined skirt, which shares honors this year with the all-around pleated skirt. White sea gull with an eighteen-inch wingspread is used by Sally Victor with dramatic effect on this navy felt broad-brimmed hat worn by Olive Deering. She wears it with a two-piece cyclamen and white print and navy crepe afternoon ensemble. Shawls make a comeback this year. They are being worn with slacks, dinner frocks and daytime dresses, like the black sheer crepe with appliqued flowers worn here by CBS actress Anne Teeman. Its accompanying shawl is edged in fringe and trimmed with the same red and green floral motif. (Joseph Halpert Style 484.) Dual purpose costume suit is the versatile ensemble CBS actress Ann Eden chooses for wear from now through spring. The jacket of determined pink and brown plaid is nipped in at the waist and fastened with plastic buttons. The shirtmaker frock which may be worn separately is of matching pink. (Max Levine Style 410.) Classic suit in natural gabardine is a spring and summer favorite of many well-dressed women. Mary Mason chooses a one-button model with hand-stitched finish. The skirt has a front and back kick pleat. With it she wears a softly shirred felt hat. (Suit from Max Levine.)

Diary of a Beauty Authority
By HELENA RUBINSTEIN (In this week's column, presented as a special feature to the women readers of this newspaper, Madame Rubinstein tells how to bring up your baby to be a beauty.) By HELENA RUBINSTEIN New York—I met a young woman yesterday who would have been a beauty if her mother had taken an interest in her appearance when she was younger. Merely by looking at this girls I could see signs of neglect in childhood and even infancy which now marred her beauty. Beauty really begins in the cradle, and there is so much mothers can do to encourage beauty in a child and to make her take an interest in her own appearance. In the case of infants, mothers should be concerned primarily with ears and teeth, for these important features are formed during the first months, and even weeks, of the child's life. To prevent protruding ears, all that is needed is a cap of soft silk or old linen which you can slip over the baby's head while she sleeps. Sounds simple, and yet neglecting such a simple precaution has caused many cases of ugly, protruding ears in young girls. As for teeth—fortunately, the days of pacifiers are past and mothers are fully alert to the dangers of thumb-sucking, but in addition, it is a good idea to wash baby's teeth after the daily bath and massage the gums with the first finger swathed in moist absorbent cotton. Statistics prove that the most prevalent beauty blemish in America is coarse pores. This unquestionably is the result of the complexion habits practiced in childhood and through the teens. Failure to cleanse the skin gently and thoroughly and to give it the proper treatment when it has been exposed to sun and wind—these are causes of coarse pores. It isn't time, but neglect, that robs baby's complexion of its fineness, its smoothness, and radiance. Many mothers, however, hesitate to use cold cream on the tender skin of their children. They shouldn't hesitate—not for a moment. A pure, wholesome pasteurized face cream will soothe and benefit their young skins and pave the way for a beautiful complexion later on. It's true that most children get exercise—running, jumping and climbing. But few children receive the special exercise they require. If your little boy or girl likes to curl over a book, you will notice his back, legs and arms knotting tightly and tighter as the wicked witch falls over the cliff. That's the time to think about exercises that will loosen up tense muscles, stretch and relax them and insure a straight, strong spine as the child develops. Defects of posture and gait can be corrected before they make a headway. Better still, before they appear. There are game exercises especially for children through which every muscle in the child's body is held in correct position and alternately stretched and relaxed. These are fun for children and stimulating to their imagination as well as beneficial to their young bodies. (If you like a series of interesting "game exercises" for your child, designed by Madame Rubinstein, simply address Helena Rubinstein, care of this paper. Madame Rubinstein will also be happy to solve your own beauty problems for you.) Next: Beautiful Hands
