Reader Suggests Memorial to Merrick

Editor, The Riviera: Someone has said that if we do not erect monuments to our worthy dead, our descendants will hold us in such light esteem that they will not erect monuments to us. Of course, the greatest monument to the memory of George E. Merrick possible for man to erect has already been erected. It is Coral Gables itself. But Mr. Merrick did that himself. May I use your columns to suggest that I believe an appropriate monument should be erected in Merrick Park to the memory of this great man. Further, I think the money should be furnished by the city, state and county governments, for reasons that should be obvious. The money could be deposited in one of the Coral Gables banks and held in escrow until ready to be paid out in accordance with the terms of the escrow. MANNIE HOLLANDER, 2328 Ponce de Leon Boulevard.

Editor, The Riviera: Your paper is a great need in Coral Gables and it is improving with every issue. Wishing you all success in the future as the city grows through the years, Sincerely, H. GEORGE FINK.

Frank N. Holley Explains Details of Tire Rationing

(Continued from Page one) trucks used exclusively for transportation of ice and fuel; transportation of materials and equipment for construction or for mechanical, structural or highway maintenance or repair; common carrier; transportation of scrap or waste materials; transportation of raw materials; semi-manufactured goods, finished products, including farm products and food; provided that no certificates shall be issued under this paragraph for a tire or tube to be mounted on a truck used for transportation of commodities to the ultimate consumer for personal, family or household use. Farm tractors or other farm implements other than automobiles or trucks, for the operation of which rubber tires or tubes are essential, are eligible. Regulations regarding recaps or retreads are: passenger cars used principally to provide transportation service, such as jitneys, taxis; cars or trucks used to transport persons to or from construction or mechanical, structural or highway repair and maintenance jobs. Tires may be recapped if used for transportation of executives, engineers, technicians and workers to and from, or within such of the following as are essential to the war effort; power generation facilities, transportation or communication facilities; or agricultural, extractive, industrial, military or naval establishments. Transportation on official business of Federal, State or local government employees engaged in the performance of government functions essential to the public health, safety or the war effort. Transportation of produce and supplies to and from the farm, if the applicant operating such farm does not own or possess a truck or other practical means of transportation. Transportation of traveling salesmen who are engaged in the sale of farm, extractive, or industrial equipment, foods, or medical supplies, the distribution of which is essential to the war effort. Transportation of newspapers for wholesale delivery; provided that a passenger automobile to be eligible under this paragraph must be used exclusively for one or more of the purposes shown above. Trucks used for any important purpose not listed above. Holley urges readers of The Riviera to cut out and save this article so that they will know at all times whether they are eligible to purchase tires or tubes or retreads.

Chatfield RADIO SPECIALIST Coral Gables Garage Has Enviable Record When a city becomes of age and has assumed an important place in the general scheme of things, the owner of a business may, with justifiable pride, point to the fact that his concern has been identified with his city from the very beginning. The Coral Gables Garage, 132 Giralda Avenue, which is owned by E. E. Edwards, is the patriarch of the garage business in Coral Gables. It was the first garage to be established in the Gables. Mr. Edwards, who is known to practically all of the permanent residents of Coral Gables as "Cy," came to this city from Georgia in 1923. He was an experienced mechanic and immediately secured employment in the lustily growing young city. In 1931 he learned that the Coral Gables Garage could be bought and, acting speedily, he took it over and established a record in the Gables, not only for continuous management over a long period of time, but he also established a reputation for fair dealing that has become one of the chief assets of his business.
