Plymouth Pageant to Feature Brides of Yesteryear Commemorative Program Planned for Church's 50th Anniversary Wednesday

By HELEN REYNOLDS Parade of the brides will feature the 50th anniversary party Wednesday night at Plymouth Hall, Coconut Grove, when members of the Plymouth Congregational Church and their friends gather to celebrate the church's golden anniversary. Young women of the congregation, costumed in the bridal attire of yesteryear and today, will enact the commemorative pageant. Descending the stair from the balcony above, where the 12 brides will be waiting their turn, the first will wear a white mousseline de soi wedding gown belonging to Alice Mead Swing, whose marriage occurred in 1881. Now a delicate ivory in color, the full sweep skirt made with ruffles and tucks has a long train. Great bows of mellow white satin ribbon decorate the caught-up skirt. The bodice is tight and the sleeves short puffs. The same dress was worn by Mrs. Swing's granddaughter, Dorothy Williams, in 1940. "Brides" participating include Mrs. John Rogers, Mrs. William Mabry, Miss Eleanor Lacey, Mrs. John Wilmot, Mrs. Grace Hollenbach, Mrs. David Davis, Mrs. Charles Archer, Mrs. George Naylor, Mrs. R. E. Lewis, Mrs. George Rozwenz and Miss Ann Pierce. Miss Jean Allen will sing for the brides, accompanied by Miss Kathleen Norris. Scotty Allen Ring Bearer Scotty Allen will act as ring bearer for the last and modernly attired bride and Susan Rogers will be flower girl. Climaxing the scene the last bride will toss her fresh flower bouquet to the waiting young Misses below as she re-ascends the stair. Other entertainment planned will be dramatization of the meeting of the four founders of the church, and of a meeting of the first Ladies Aid at a quilting bee in 1910. Mrs. J. D. Overstreet will read a "Brief History of Plymouth Church compiled from a study of all available church records. Songs of the past 50 years will be given by Eleanor Clark Linton and Adelaide Gillette. The Rev. David J. Davis will speak briefly on "Our Present Assets." Mrs. Hollice E. Plotts will give an appropriate introduction to each bride. There will be exhibits of the early records and pictures under the direction of Mrs. S. J. Kent. Decorations for the party were detailed by Olga Kent, Mrs. Frank Longshore and Mrs. Leith D. Kent. Climaxing the whole party will be the cutting of the anniversary cake. Honor for this goes to Mrs. Harlan Trapp, the only living charter member of the church. Refreshments will be served by the Emily B. Stimson Circle. The anniversary committee planning the celebration includes: Charles V. Kennedy, Frank J. Dick, Albert F. Hudson, Richard Hollenbach, the Rev. David J. Davis, and the Mesdames: Harlan Trapp, Hattie Norwood, A. V. Peacock, Mary Swing, S. J. Kent, J. D. Overstreet, P. A. Kent, Hollice Plotts and Louis Stimson.

Mrs. Clifton Home From Maine

Crisp, tangy weather similar to that she enjoyed this Summer on the coast of Maine was on tap to greet Mrs. Mathew Clifton last week when she rejoined her husband at their home, 1140 Coral Way, after a stay in the North. During the four months she was away from Coral Gables, the transplanted Main-liner found time to renew old friendships in Philadelphia and Wayne, Pa., saw the new Broadway shows, and ventured Down East to see if the Maine lobsters were as good as she remembered. "They were indeed!" she remarked. Another highlight of her extensive travels was a visit at the home of her sister, Miss Martha Brady, in Wilton, Conn. When her trunks are unpacked and her home set to right for the Winter, Mrs. Clifton plans to see the Gables friends she'd planned to meetin the North—but missed. "Our plans for Summer reunions became hopelessly tangled and I didn't see a soul from the Gables during the whole time," she explained. "I seemed to arrive everywhere a week too late, or had to leave days too early, to cross paths with other vacationing Gableites."
