South Miami Horse Show Captures Social Spotlight
The social spotlight swings Southward this week-end to pick out the tanbark ring at Sunset Drive and 71st Street where the South Miami Riding Club will present its 1947 Fall Horse Show, Sunday. The afternoon-long event will get off to a canter at 11:30 a. m. when devotees of the show ring join owners of mounts, gentlemen riders and equestriennes at a Show Breakfast at Fox's. It will close with a banquet at the same restaurant with toasts to the victors and food for the weary. Under the general chairmanship of H. A. Shay, noted Gables horseman, more than a hundred blue ribbon winners from local stables and northern strings will be put through their paces during the afternoon. Youngsters barely old enough to straddle the saddle will pilot fat ponies in exhibitions of ring manners and equitation that always find favor with spectators. Blue-blooded hunters and jumpers will demonstrate poetry in motion over a course studded with gates and hedges during the multiclass program. Evidence that all devotees of the tanbark will not be inside the ring was given today when the sponsoring club announced that close to 150 Gables, Grove and South Miami residents had reserved boxes for the show. Among those who have reserved ringside space were Dr. Arden H. Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Colton, W. T. Price, Dr. Oden A. Schaeffer, Fred Borton, Mr. and Mrs. Harry B. Matthews, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Candlelight Service Unites Two Coconut Grove Families
—Photo by Le Man Mrs. Gustav William Anderson Jr. Two Coconut Grove families were united yesterday with the marriage of Miss Gloria Jean Jones and Gustav William Anderson, Jr., which took place in the Coconut Grove Baptist Church. Palms, ferns and white gladioli provided the decor for the 8 p. m. candlelight service, performed by the Rev. George Ray. Nuptial music was played by Mrs. F. S. Youngfelt with vocal solos by William Folwell. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Costa Jones, 2865 Day Avenue. Mr. Anderson's parents are the senior G. W. Andersons of 3058 Shipping Avenue. Entering on the arm of her uncle, Mr. John Leonard Williams, the bride was attired in a gown of ivory satin with pointed fingertip length sleeves. The long train extended from a front peplum and the sweetheart neckline of the fitted bodice was set off with a strand of pearls. Her fingertip veil of illusion was held by a ruffle headpiece of matching material. White carnations, tuberoses and baby orchids formed the cascade bouquet. Miss Burnell Wallace, maid of honor, wore aqua brocade satin, designed like the bride's, and carried gold chrysanthemums, while Miss Carmen Wright and Miss Bobbie Pierce, bridesmaids, were attired in pink and yellow brocade satin in the same design, and carried bronze chrysanthemums. All three wore floral headpieces corresponding to their bouquets. Flower girl Arlene Henderson was in blue taffeta with a matching bonnet, and carried pompom chrysanthemums. Mr. Anderson's best man was A. J. Warren. Ushering roles were taken by Julian Bridges, cousin of the bride, and Woodrow Henderson. Royal blue crepe dress and black accessories were worn by Mrs. Jones while Mrs. Anderson was attired in an aqua dress and white accessories. Mrs. G. A. Williams, grandmother of the bride, who came from Tampa to attend the ceremony, wore a wine dress with black accessories. Following the wedding, the reception was held in the church annex. Miss Mamie Harriette Parker was in charge of the punch table assisted by Miss Sharon Fulcher. Mrs. Carnes Austin cut the cake. The junior Mrs. Anderson, a native Miamian, is a graduate of Ponce de Leon High School, and attended the University of Miami and Western Carolina Teacher's College. Mr. Anderson, also a native Miamian, received his diploma from Ponce de Leon High and attended the University of Miami. He also served 42 months in the Navy, and at the present time is connected with the Veteran's Administration. Returning from a two-week's honeymoon, the couple will reside in Miami.
