BATTLE OF THE GIANTS Maryland vs. Tarheel Battle Gambino-Justice Feud

By WARREN DUFFEE United Press Sports Writer Raleigh, N. C., Nov. 13 (UP)-Action-happy fans who insist on their football at a thrill-a-minute gait should get their money's worth Saturday when Maryland throws reckless razzle-dazzle and galloping Lu Gambino against North Carolina and Charlie (Choo Choo) Justice. Gambino's 2-point-a-minute pace tops the nation with his scoring average of two touchdowns per game, and the Carolina Choo Choo is finally rolling at full throttle after being stalled half the season. The two stack up as the flashiest breakaway threats the Southern Conference offers and their clash should be the loop's best of-the-day game. Nobody considered Maryland in the pre-season dope but Sunny Jim Tatum turned up with a zipper-dipper attack and the balding bambino to bring the old liners along from nowhere to a front-rank spot in the conference race. Football fortunes were low on the college park campus when Tatum ambled in from Oklahoma to take over a demoralized squad with a miserable 1946 record. With no promises and no cheers, he rolled out a spectacular offensive machine that has knocked off six opponents so far and lost only to Duke. Saturday's battle against his old alma mater in Griffith Stadium at Washington may be the toughest test yet for Tatum's Terrapins. But the easy-going ex-Tar heel made his usual prediction-"We'll try to give them a good ball game." Tatum started at North Carolina during Carl Snavely's first regime in the '30's and has been anxius ever since to beat his old teacher. Justice and fullback Walt Pupa led North Carolina's almost-perfect offensive show that swamped North Carolina State 41-6. The chunky Choo Choo flashed for 198 yards for the first time this year. The Tar Heels are favored but may need all their power to check-rein bambino and the accurate passing of quarterback Vic Turyn. The Terps and Tar Heels offer the brightest offensive show, but the bitterest rivalry goes on the line when North Carolina State and Wake Forest square off in Raleigh for their annual grudge fight. William and Mary plays Washington and Lee at Roanoke, Va., in another conference headliner, and league-leading Duke meets South Carolina at Durham. Other family fights send Richmond against Virginia Tech at Blacksburg, Va., and VMI against the Citadel at Charleston, S. C. Clemson and Georgia Washington play intersectional games, Clemson against Duquesne at Pittsburgh and George Washing-ton, still hunting a 1947 victory, against Wayne in Detroit. Davidson and Furman have open dates. Independent Virginia, dropped from the rank of the nation's top five after its 7-0 loss to Pennsylvania, collides with West Virginia at Morgantown, W. Va.

Sports Parade

(Continued from Page Six) Florida; VPI over Richmond; W. G. M. over W. & L.; Vanderbilt over Miami, at Miami; over Evansville. WEST UCLA over Washington-Build-up for the Trojan horse. California over Montana-Still not ready to hibernate. Oregon over Stanford-Oh for the good old days. Oregon State over Washington State-Ditto. Also: Denver over Utah State; Utah over Idaho; Colorado over Wyoming; Brigham Young over Colorado Aggies, and Nevada over Montana State. SOUTHWEST Southern Methodist over Arkansas-A "walrus" with Walker. Texas over TCU-Meatless Saturday. Rice over Texas Aggies-Says the wise ole Owl. Baylor over Tulsa-Just a breeze.

SCORE CARD (Continued from Page Six)

(Continued from Page Six) and courageous, he, more than any other, personified the true spirit of the Hurricanes. "At center, JAMES (now freshman coach) was outstanding in a field of great centers. His speed, plus power and ability to diagnose plays, makes him the choice. No big man ever moved faster for the Hurricanes. "CZAKY was the unsung backfield hero. Block-tackle-block-tackle-for three years-a master at one trade. He was the key man of the great 1938 backfield. Courtney, Dunn Similar "DUNN did everything well. Extremely tall, fast and aggressive, his long crow hops rolled up the yardage. He was at his best when the going was tough. "COURTNEY, like Dunn, was an offensive power-house. His accurate punting, when needed, was the balance wheel in Hurricane play. And, like Dunn, he, too, was at his best when the chips were down. His leadership dominated early Hurrican power. "To FOX goes the fullback slot. He was the equalizer to heavier opponents with his bull-like rushes. His fiery spirit infected the entire team. His fullback play was, and still is, the criterion by which future Hurricanes will be judged."

Sudden Score Is Predicted

(Continued from Page Six) Wilkin's brilliant 88-yard dash into the promised land of last year. Wilkin is doing his running for the Hurricane frosh this season, so the two are considered the equal on the present Cav-squad-Billy Vebor and Sonny Parrish, to mention a pair-are past-due to have a big night. So that's the way the game stands: Jackson odds-on favorites to avenge the bitter whippings of the past three seasons, and Ponce de Leon ready to be dangerous.

The lookout system for forest fire protection was developed in Maine.

Face-Lifting Due for Club Courts

(Continued from Page Six) which has caused several falls on the courts," Macey stated. Clay, the tennis pro explained, will not give as good all-weather surface, but surface and grade drainage has been so good in spite of this summer's rains that the courts have been playable all except two days during the off-season. Macey gave no details about his plans for tournament play at the Country Club, but said that several prominent local tennis players have been using the courts recently. Among them he named John Howard, new coach at the University, and Miss Rhoda Hopkins, protege of Mercer Beasley.

ON THE BEACH

Although he participated in many other Pacific Theatre operations, Commodore (now Captain) Roger Simpson, ironically enough, was "shore based" when the initial landings were made in the Philippines. Marine Captain Roger Jr., Merchant Marine, describes the action in Leyte Gulf while his Navy father listens with envy.

The sugar mill at Clewiston will become one of the state's outstanding tourist attractions when the harvest season opens next fall, according to Josiah Ferris, Jr., vice president of the United States Sugar Corp. Uniformed guides will conduct visitors through the great plant and explain its operation.
