Junior Housekeepers Unveil 'Fashion Plate for '48'

Gablesgrams

BY HELEN REYNOLDS, SOCIETY EDITOR Mrs. Edith Dreesbach Rowe, of 3515 Durango Street, will give the first of a series of six bridge-luncheons tomorrow at the Country Club of Coral Gables, entertaining 22 guests. Mrs. Rowe, who very recently returned from an exciting two months visiting friends in North Carolina and Louisiana, spent the late summer at "The Towers," Miami Beach. * * * Good homemade food served at luncheon and useful prizes for high score winners at bridge, feature the "No Name" bridge-luncheon club which will meet Friday at the home of member Mrs. Fred (Kay) Diestelhorst. Regulars include Mrs. Vose Babcock, Mrs. Robert Shelley, Mrs. Berney Good, Mrs. Richard E. Davis, Mrs. Robert Edwards, Mrs. Herbert Johnson and Mrs. Karl Madsen. * * * Mrs. S. Earl Giffen's small luncheon today at her home, 1008 Alhambra Circle, complimenting Mrs. Walter C. Conger of Youngstown, Ohio, was followed by a sightseeing yachting trip through the fabulous islands dotting Biscayne Bay. Mrs. Conger, house guest of Mrs. J. H. Loffen, who has been feted on a round of parties, will leave tomorrow for her home. Tonight Mr. and Mrs. John C. Sullivan will entertain about 15 guests in her honor at dinner in their home, 1101 Avenue Palermo. * * * Last October, the Coral Gables Woman's Club gave a style show as its one big benefit of the year. This year the club will give a dinner-dance on the night of Dec. 5 at the Country Club of Coral Gables. They promise superb entertainment and the fun of dancing under the stars. * * * Off on a combined business and vacation trip are Mr. and Mrs. William B. Weaver of 516 Avenue Aragon. Mr. Weaver will attend the Regional Conference of the Social Security Administration managers in Augusta, Ga. Following the meeting Mr. and Mrs. Weaver will visit the W. A. Walkers of Montgomery, Alabama, parents of Mrs. W. B. Weaver Jr. They will also visit relatives in Bay St. Louis, Miss., and New Orleans. They plan to return to Coral Gables about December 15 and will be accompanied home by Mrs. L. H. Christy, mother of the senior Mrs. Weaver, and T. Kent Christy, her brother, who will remain for the season. * * * Planning to return to their Coral Gables home, 1700 Country Club Prado, early in December, Major and Mrs. R. R. Hogan spent a recent week at "The Homestead," Hot Springs, which is a drive of 85 miles from their country home, Whitegate, Virginia. The Hogans have been entertaining many Coral Gables friends this summer in their recently completed guest house on the 50-acre farm. Among the latest were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Page and Captain and Mrs. M. G. Addoms of Coconut Grove. The "farm" boasts 1,000 chickens, three pigs and five black Angus steers, so guests at Whitegate may snap their fingers at meatless and eggless days. In addition, Mrs. Hogan writes, they have plenty of fresh vegetables from their garden, five acres in peaches and apples and a beautiful panorama view of 45 miles of the Blue Ridge mountains from the guest house door. * * * Mrs. Grant Orr has returned to her Alhambra Plaza home after a month's visit in Illinois, Indiana and Washington, D. C. In Chicago Mrs. Orr thrilled over the throaty voiced Tallulah Bankhead in la Bankhead's latest melo-dramer, "Private Lives," and was quite disappointed with the "no coffee served Don Mc-Neil breakfast show." "'Much better over the airwaves," said Mrs. Orr, "and you can brew your own coffee."

Member-Models Poised for Country Club Fashion Show

An advance peek at two of the fashion-firsts to be presented at the Country Club of Coral Gables luncheon style show tomorrow is given above by member-models participating in the pageant. Mrs. Robert V. Edwards, left, is wearing Lillian Fredrics sophisticated "Gallivantin' Lady," a show-your-shoulders cocktail gown in ballerina-cut moire. Her coordinated accessories from Roal include a satin "carryall" and black half-hat bedecked with bonny "feather fancies." Mrs. Mildred Rupp Campbell may wield the gavel with assurance in her black silk "Madame President" original from Minna Lee. The soft off-center drape of the dress is echoed in flared felt turban set with tiny mirror spirals. Hat and pouch bag of black broadcloth are from Roal. Other feminine fashions will be supplied for the all-Gables style parade by Elaine's Dress Shop. Coiffures to suit the occasion will be Josef creations. Louise Laird will supervise cosmetics and make-up for the show.

Children at Kendall Home To Benefit from Grove Style Prevue Tuesday Night

The Fashion Plate for '48 will unfold in a froth of tulle and glitter of sequins Tuesday night at the Housekeeper's Clubhouse in Coconut Grove. Before a throng of style-wise South Florida women, mademoiselles and slim matrons of the Junior Housekeepers will model cottons for sunseekers and satins for fun-seekers in an advance showing of next year's styles. "Ohs" and "Ahs" will greet fashion confections and tailleur triumphs from Paris, New York and California drawing boards—but above them members of the sponsoring organization will hear the bubbling laughter of children. The children won't be there on Tuesday at eight. But they'll be out in force in December when Junior Housekeepers, on proceeds from the benefit show, spill a Santa's pack of toys before orphaned youngsters at the Kendall Home for Children. It's for that Christmas gesture that club members and the staff of Allan Abess, ltd., today were putting in hours of overtime with pins in their mouths and perspiration on their brows. The fashion show in a club house transformed by decorations concocted by Mrs. Robert Lee and her committee will be followed by a bridge party being arranged by Mrs. Blake Everingham. Mrs. S. A. Sutton Jr. will have charge of table prizes and Mrs. Garland Byron will supervise favors. Mrs. Kenneth Stanleigh is general chairman of the fashion show which will be narrated by Laura O'Banion. Member-models sleekly gowned by Abess and coifed by J. Baldi, will step out of the pages of Vogue as they're turned by Mrs. Arne Skagseth. Youthful Housekeepers who will become models for the night will include Miss Thelma Bryson, Mrs. Dean Claussen, Miss Joan Johnson, Mrs. Frances Roman, Mrs. James A. Bradford, Miss Mimi Owens, Mrs. William Marble, Mrs. James Gooding and Miss Doris Wolf. Others who will display Abess originals will be Miss Elizabeth Garcia, Mrs. Sutton, Mrs. Henry Meyers and Mrs. David B. Webb.

Holiday Dinner? It's in the Bag

If Elliott Dunwoody Jr. can do anything about the situation, he'll bag his own Thanksgiving dinner. He and Mrs. Dunwoody and children will leave November 26 for a five-day vacation in Arcadia with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Dunwoody. While there, the Junior Dunwoody says he intends to do plenty of hunting.

FELLOWSHIP MAPS WEEK-END RETREAT

A three-day retreat at Snapper Creek is in store for 30 young people of the Christian Youth Fellowship of the Coral Gables First Christian Church this weekend. Dividing their time among study, recreation, and fellowship, the group will plan the youth activities for the first quarter of next year. They will conduct their own church service Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Pilley, sponsors of the Intermediate Fellowship, Mrs. Frank Cramer and Rev. John W. Messer, minister of the church, will be the adult sponsors for this retreat.

Ponce PTA Host At Benefit Review

Eleven a. m. sharp is the hour set for the Ponce de Leon High school PTA book review program tomorrow at the Coral Gables Woman's Club. Mrs. Herschel Smith will review Marjorie Stoneman Douglas' best seller, "Everglades, River of Grass" and 25 books autographed by Mrs. Douglas will be on hand through courtesy of the Rainbow Book shop of Coral Gables. Mrs. Smith's fee for the review will be contributed by her to the Wellesley Foundation Fund Drive, now in progress. Tickets for the review may be procured at the door of the club Thursday, or from any member of the association.

Mrs. Ralph Jones, 214 Avenue Sidonia, will be Washington bound on Thanksgiving Day. She will go on to Philadelphia Nov. 29 for the Army-Navy game. She'll return to her home on Dec. 3.

'See Florida First' Is Slogan Of Peregrinating Gables Folk

Mrs. Walter W. Wigman's "Elk widowing" days will come to an end when her husband returns to their home on Hardee Drive tomorrow. Mrs. Wigman claims she has been an "Elk "widow" for the past month while her husband has been traveling up to New York and through Florida attending to business for the Elks organization. This week he has been present at State meetings of the Elks in Ft. Pierce, Pahokee and Ft. Lauderdale. * * * After meandering around the state of Florida all this week, Dr. and Mrs. Edward H. Williams, 4375 S. W. 16th Terrace, will return home this Saturday. At present they are in Ft. Meyers where they are enjoying a quiet, restful vacation. * * * Getting a new Chevrolet and having an old friend arrive on the same day are two recent happenings at the home of Mrs. George M. Wisner, 1246 Avenue Asturia. Mrs. Wisner's friend, Miss Pearl Irish, recently drove down from Chicago in the car which Mrs. Wisner bought there. Miss Irish will leave for Chicago the day after Thanksgiving.

THIS IS TREASON!

A fur coat isn't needed for her second visit to the Gables says Mrs. Sherman Weatherly, a house guest of the Frank Wedekempers at 3018 Granada Boulevard. Here from Louisville, Ky., for a two weeks' visit, Mrs. Weatherly vows that she nearly froze during her last visit here two years ago.
