$43,500 Operating Budget for Biltmore Links Told
Greens Fees, Budget Favor Gableites | Estimated Income Set At $13,250
An estimated annual net income of $13,250 was seen by the city commission Tuesday night in the consideration of a budget presented by Wilbur "Umps" Clark for the operation and maintenance of the Coral Gables Biltmore Golf Course. The course is expected to be playable within two weeks. In addition, the commission also approved daily and annual greens fees recommended by Clark on a resident-non-resident and seasonal basis and allowed first-year maintenance and operation budget of $43,500. Gross revenue for the first year was approximated at $55,000 by Clark. The bulk of the income was expected to come from daily greens fees which were set at $1.50 for the summer and $2.50 for the Dec. 1-April 15 winter season. Annual greens fees will be $100 for each permanent resident plus $25 for each additional member of his immediate family, and $150 for non-Coral Gables permanent residents with an increase to $50 for each family addition. Employees Still Use Granada Fees City employees, who presently pay no greens fees for the use of the Granada municipal course, will pay one half the resident's fees at the Biltmore. They may continue to play free on the Granada links. Pro-Amateur Tourney Discussed Clark, who is in temporary charge of both city-operated courses, also outlined plans for holding a major professional-amateur golf tournament at the Biltmore in March. He said that most of the big-name golfers who will be in the Miami area for the annual $10,000 tournament will be available for such an attraction. A breakdown of the approved budget follows: Estimated gross revenue: $55,000.00 | Expenses: Maintenance and operation: $43,500.00 | Repainting and repairing pro shop, locker room, etc. 4,500.00 | Repair present equipment leased from Veterans Administration 1,500.00 | Purchase of 4 power lawn-mowers for greens: 1,200.00 | Purchase of caddy carts: 1,050.00 | Total expenses: $51,750.00 | Est. Net Income $13,250.00
Head Coach Ray "Bear" Wolf brings his Florida Gators to town Thursday for their ninth feud with the Miami Hurricanes over the state championship. With the stakes comparatively low, considering both team's season records, the rivals will be battling for the joy of winning.
Routine Drills Order of Day For Hurricanes
With the clash for the state championship with the Florida Gators just two days away, Coach Jack Harding announced this morning that he intended to ease up on the practice sessions for his squad this afternoon and tomorrow to prevent any further handicapping injuries. Shuler Still Only Doubtful Only Hal Shuler, who captained the Hurricanes in their game with Vanderbilt Friday, is in doubtful shape for the game, according to trainer Dave Wike. Harding ran the varsity through a light scrimmage against Florida plays Monday and yesterday without casualties, concentrating on running drills and pass formations behind closed doors. With the embargo on onlookers rigidly enforced, the curious came anyhow to speculate on what was going on behind the high shrubs at Quarterbacks field. Some insisted that Harding will surprise the Gators with pass plays like the Johnson to Novak special which caught the Gators flat-footed at Gainesville in the Hurricanes 20-13 triumph last year. But others of the pessimistic clan recalled that it was Bill Kraanai's plunges after the Florida forward wall was worn out that paved the way to victory-and there seems to be no fullback prospect in sight to repeat the marches this year. Florida rooters, complete with band, are expected to arrive here Friday afternoon after an advance guard makes its appearance Thursday night. University Homecoming celebrations are scheduled to start with a bonfire pep-rally at the Main campus early Thursday evening. Redwood, Port Orford Cedar, Western Red Cedar, Eastern Red Cedar and Southern Cypress are rot resistant, and as near ever-lasting as untreated wood can be. ADDITIONAL SPORTS ON PAGE 8
BOB BOWMAN CAPTAIN Bob Bowman, veteran of three Hurricane campaigns as wingback, was named to captain Miami against Florida Friday night by Coach Jack Harding this morning. Bob Sutter, who has previously been used only as a line-backer, may get the starting nod at center for the game, along with Don Cobb and Al Kasulin.
Commission Named; Elect Thursday | Tax Compromise Aids December Coliseum Opening
(Continued from Page One) devised by the sports commission and approved by the senior body. It was understood that the procedure of sports commissions in other cities be carefully studied in order that the best regulatory and taxation powers be incorporated in the plan which will be reviewed. Peoples Optimistic Peoples' reaction to the "stopgap" measure was that with a flat rate so that promoters will know what they must pay, a reasonable rate can be worked out by the athletic board that will favor a full sports program as originally intended for the arena. John Cisco, attorney for the Coliseum interests, suggested that an equitable license fee for promotions be devised immediately so that promoters would "be willing to gamble on drawing patrons to their attractions without having to operate in the dark on additional expenses. They hesitate to commit themselves until some definite disposition is made." Peeples seconded the statement with the statement that promoters are reluctant to take a chance on "breaking the ice" at the Coliseum. "In Malone's case, it is pretty certain that the Carnera-Lewis exhibition would pack the Miami Civic Arena. The Coliseum will almost double the seating capacity but there's no assurance that people will come out to the Gables and so he prefers to play it safe and remain in Miami. I think that if hinderances were removed, he would be very willing to book the attraction into the Coliseum."
