Wonders of Mechanical Age Do Much To Provide Racing with Improvements

The wonders of this mechanical age have done much toward providing racing with many improvements, most notable among which are the adoption of the tote and mutual machines and the invention of the starting gate. These departures today are as much a part of racing as the thoroughbreds themselves. And, speaking of starting machines, the new United Starting Gate invented by George Cassidy—which was used during the winter for the first time at Tropical Park and now is in use at Hialeah Race Course—is considered the greatest yet designed. It was also used at the New York tracks this season. The gate was patented by William C. Smith at the Homestead Welding Co., on Long Island. The United Starting Gate although has been completely approved by horsemen as well as jockeys and officials because it offers at once a maximum feature which gives it an edge over rival apparatus. Cassidy, George R. (Buddy) Wingfield, who supervised its operation at Tropical Park, and Cassidy who is in charge of the gate at Belmont, so say they and it will work in New York, both find the gate easier to operate, more durable, and said it is practically assure perfect starts. Likewise, it is equipped with many modern safety appliances which provide greater safety for horses and riders. The United Gate is not only wider, longer than similar 14-stall machines, but it also is two and a half tons lighter. It measures 65 feet against 50 feet for other gates of that capacity. Stalls for the horses are 25 inches wide as compared with 23 inches, an item which makes for less movement by horses while in the gate. Another fresh feature is a lowering of the pedding on the front gates of each stall, giving horses a full view instead of causing them to rear seeking to look over the gates. The entire construction of the gate is of steel tubing, and its side are lined with Dupont rubber-ing. The doors are opened by stationary magnetic power, while the locks are adjustable. The doors can be locked to secure a horse in the gate regardless how he lunges, but are adjusted to permit a fractious actor to break through rather than injure the jockey or itself. These doors weighing but 12 pounds against 68 on other gates.

Woman Flier Abashed By Broken Garter

Lexington, Neb. (UP)—A Northtwite woman flier landed her light plane at Lexington and was startled by her greeting. As she stepped to the ground, a bystander said: "You have a broken garter." The woman took a quick look to find the bystander had told the truth. It required a mechanic. The "garter" is a band that surrounds a landing strut on the aircraft.

Home Accidents Kill More Than 34,000 Annually

Home, they say, is a man's castle, but if he took a close look at the accident record there a man would likely complete the picture by donning a suit of armor. Over 34,000 persons were killed in their homes last year, and the toll is rising. More persons are accidently killed in the home than any other place. Little To Do Yet little can be done about cutting down the death and accident total in homes except by constantly remind persons of the danger that confront them in their own so-called havens, says the National Conservation Bureau, accident prevention division of the Association of Casualty and Surety Executives. Accident prevention in the home is a matter of self-discipline and alertness, and accidents cannot be curbed by safety rules and regulations such as are practiced in industry or on the highways. It's up to the individual to watch out for himself. Nearly every accident in the home is due to two causes, says the bureau. They are (1) a dangerous thing and (2) a careless person. Iron Dangerous A dangerous thing may be a curling iron, a kitchen knife, a charge of electricity, even a toy. But not all of them are equally dangerous. Most of them are harmless until they become the cause of an accident through personal carelessness. On the other hand, there are things like electricity, gasoline and sharp-edged tools which become extremely dangerous with only the slightest amount of carelessness. Alertness and self policing leads a person to instinctively use caution when handling the more dangerous things. Danger Spots Another phase of accident prevention in the home is the location of the "danger spots." Stairways top the list, because falls on stairways account for almost one-fourth of all home accidents. Many of these are fatal. Next to stairways, the most dangerous spot is the yard. Falls and heavier tools, such as lawnmowers, hoes and rakes, account for the accident rate jump in the yard. The most dangerous room in the house is the kitchen, accounting as it does for approximately one-fifth of all home accidents. Being a workshop the kitchen has more hazardous tools than does any other room of the home. Burns, one of the chief causes of accidental death and injury, are most prevalent in the kitchen. Loose Rugs Dangerous Living and dining rooms rank second to the kitchen as danger spots. They account for 12 per cent of home accidents, because of loose rugs, slippery floors, improperly arranged furniture, frayed connections on electrical equipment, careless disposal of cigar and cigarette butts. The porch and the bedroom each account for 7 per cent of home accidents; the basement for 6 per cent. Contrary to popular belief, the bathroom ranks last as a danger spot in the home, scoring only 3 per cent of all home mishaps. It still isn't a place where one can relax and be careless, however. It only takes one accident to be fatal and the bathroom could easily be the place. Frequent usage raises the chances of an accident there. Types of accidents in the home can be classed in six main types, reports the National Conservation Bureau. They are: Falls, burns and scalds, asphyxiation and suffocation, poisoning, gunshot wounds, and fire.

10,000-Mile Towing Trip Starts From Seattle

SEATTLE (UP) — The longest towing operation ever conducted from the Pacific Northwest began here when a tug left Seattle towing a barge which carried six steel army tugs destined for Buenos Aires, Argentina. The barge Island Yarder was expected to make the 10,000-mile trip in 50 days, arriving around Dec. 1. The six tugs were placed aboard the barge in an unusual loading operation which attracted attention all over the country. The barge was submerged and the tugs were floated over her. Likewise, in Buenos Aires, the tugs will be unloaded in drydock by floating them off.

South Miami Asks Terminals For Negroes

The South Miami City Council, meeting last night, decided to hold the Keys Transit Company to the section of their certificate of necessity which requires the bus firm to provide terminals for Negro passengers. The bus company had applied for permission to pick up negro passengers and transport them to the colored beach at Crandon Park. The council will not allow the busses to pick up colored passengers at other points than the terminals. In two zoning matters, the commission upheld the decisions of the Zoning Board. Application of Katherine McKay to change the block near Bird and Red Roads for commercial use was rejected because the commission held that the applicant did not control the entire block. The strip below the Riviera Nursery, which adjoins the business section was re-zoned to allow apartments.

'United Nations' Problem Faces Army in Japan

TOKYO, Japan (UP)—Almost every nationality in the world is represented among approximate-ly 1,200 foreign nationals who are being processed, mostly for reemployment, by the U. S. Eighth Army headquarters. There are 100 American Nisei, 59 Canadian Nisei and 115 who are listed as "stateless." In addition, there are Poles, Hawaiians, Hungarians, Ukrainians, Italians, Filipinos, Germans, Peruvians, Portuguese, Indonesians, Chinese, British, Indochinese, Spanish, Syrians, French, Egyptians, Danes, Annamites, Swedes, Dutch, Belgians and Swiss. Most of the nationals, who were in Japan during or before the war, were employed as typists, stenographers, laborers, foremen or teletype operators, while some were highly skilled medical or engineering specialists.

Brick Apartment House To Make Journey

NEW YORK (UP)—Thirty-five families will get a ride across a highway in their own house soon. The city announced plans to move a four-story brick apartment building to make way for new road work. The trip across the highway probably will take several days, with the building moving four feet in about two minutes and then standing still for an hour or two while workmen reset the more than 1,000 steel rollers on which it will move forward. The tenants will continue to have electric light, plumbing, water and heat, through flexible fixtures.

That Parking Problem May Be Solved

Philadelphia (UP)—The busy executive with an office in a big city skyscraper soon may be relieved of the problem of where to park his car. The Philadelphia Automobile Trade Association says engineering plans for a 10-story building with parking space directly adjoining every office. Automobiles will reach the next-to-office parking space by run-up ramps. Another new design reported by the PATA is a new type building consisting of a parking lot with office building wrapped around it.
