Gablesgrams

By HELEN REYNOLDS, SOCIETY EDITOR When Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Prousclt of Caracas, Venezuela, set their private plane down in Coral Gables Friday, hidden in the cockpit was a "Pinata" brought for their young daughter, Diane Lee who was celebrating her 11th birthday Saturday with a party at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Roberts, 3504 Durango Street. Diane Lee attends Miss Harris' School and eight little friends, including some classmates in her sixth grade, were her birthday guests. Now in case you are not familiar with a "Pinata" it is a large papier mache affair. It can be any shape, a large doll house, a bird cage. In this case it was a Chinese lantern. Inside the "pinata" were cute little foreign favors for the birthday guests, gifts which are released only when the proper ribbon is pulled. Mrs. Proudsit makes as many trips to the States as she can-at least two a year. She accompanies her husband, who practically commutes to his New York office. The Proudsits have lived in Caracas for 20 years. * * * Dr. and Mrs. Sidney G. Cassell and Mr. and Mrs. Don B. Arnold celebrated their sixth wedding anniversaries with a cocktail party Saturday in the Red Room at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Close to 70 guests were bidden and many of the couples who attended marked their own marriage milestones in November. The Arnold's date--November 14-beats the Cassells' which is coming up on the 27th. Guests Walter and Sylvia Furlong's tenth anniversary is today; the P. B. Wachtels' third anniversary was Tuesday and Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Drake Jr. will mark their six years of married bliss on the 30th. Costa Rican Consul and Mrs. Walter S. Ashby also were among the merry-makers celebrating a November date. "But," scoffed Mrs. Ashby, "Six years!" Consul and Mrs. Ashby are entertaining members of the cast of "Outward Bound" at a party Saturday. * * * Among cocktail parties preceding the annual home-coming party Thanksgiving night of the Century Club are those of Dr. and Mrs. William Dismukes and Dr. and Mrs. Horace Cartee. This year the annual roundup will be held at the Country Club with a buffet supper served at 10 o'clock. Tables will not be reserved for groups, but reservations are asked. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Page, the president and his lady, will be greeting guests about nine o'clock. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Lowell E. Southern of 3610 Durango Street, will be having holiday guests with the arrival of his aunt, Mrs. Richard Reilay from Grove Park, N. C., Tuesday. Arriving Wednesday from Snell Island, St. Petersburg, will be E. L. Southern, Mr. Southern's father. The two visitors, who are brother and sister, will not only have a family reunion, but they will be getting in some golf daily, for they are both ardent fans of the grassy greens. * * * Mrs. Roderick McCullough Thomas entertained at luncheon Saturday in the Bahama Room of the Columbus Hotel, honoring her sorority sister and former school mate, Mrs. Ferguson Carey, historian general of the U. D. C. Mrs. Carey, who was in Miami to attend the National Convention U. D. C., will visit relatives in Winter Haven before returning to her home in Alexandria, Va. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Willis R. Rowe are occupying their new home at 4071 Woodbridge Road after a visit with their families in Pennsylvania. They will be entertaining Northerners and will be joined by Mrs. Rowe's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Earhart, who have just opened their Sunset Island No. 3 home for the winter activities.

Summer Wedding Planned by Martha Anne Ellis

The 1947 Sweetheart of Sigma Chi at the University of Miami will become the 1948 bride of her favorite Sigma Chi when Miss Martha Anne Ellis exchanges vows with John Vines Hardeman Jr., early next Summer. Betrothal of the Gables girl was announced yesterday by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles William Ellis of 5023 S. W. 59th Street. Her fiance, who joined the fraternity at the University after release from two and a half years of service with the Naval Air Corps, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Vines Hardeman of 2852 S. W. 35th Avenue. Miss Ellis was graduated from Ponce de Leon High School and is now a sophomore at the University of Miami. She was recently elected an officer in Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and is active on a "practicing journalist" on college publications. She was crowned "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" at the fraternity's annual Sweetheart Ball this year. Trained As Pilot Mr. Hardeman enlisted in the U. S. Navy upon graduation from Ponce de Leon High, and after indoctrination as a V-12 student, was chosen for training as a Naval Air Corps pilot. He was stationed at Chapel Hill, Philadelphia, Memphis and Pensacola during service with the Navy and is now associated with his father in the insurance business. Marriage of the popular young Gables couple will unite the children of long-time residents here who were boyhood friends in Georgia. Mr. Ellis and the senior Mr. Hardeman, both members of prominent Peach State families, were schoolmates in Macon. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Simpson, 1420 Granada Blvd., returned last night from Dallas, Texas where they visited Mrs. Simpson's sister, Mrs. James C. Crouch, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Chadick.

Club Plants Name Tree

A20-year search for a Coco Plum tree was ended recently for members of the Coco Plum Woman's Club when Dr. Taylor Alexander, professor of Botany at the University of Miami, presented one of the rare plants to the local group. Mrs. C. Ernest Snyder, president of the club (left); Mrs. S. L. Anderson, library chairman who accepted the gift for the membership; and Mrs. B. B. Leigh, grounds committee, (right) lost no time in planting the Coco Plum tree inthe garden surrounding the spacious clubhouse. The tropical plant bears edible fruit in maturity--but Mrs. Snyder speculated that it would be some time before "crops" from the group's young namesake would grace a club luncheon menu.

MISS LORRAINE PURVIS COMPLIMENTED

Mrs. John C. Sullivan's luncheon Saturday at the Country Club complimented Miss Lorraine Purvis, bride-elect of Don Morris of Ft. Lauderdale. Among the 18 guests were Mrs. Hugh Purvis, mother of the bride-to-be; Mrs. John E. Morris and Miss Polly Morris, mother and sister of her fiance, and Mrs. Jack Warner and Mrs. Dwight Rogers Jr., all of Ft. Lauderdale. The wedding of Miss Purvis and Mr. Morris will take place Dec. 27.

Arriving sometime Wednesday night, Clifford Wells Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Wells, will stay with his parents at 1402 Country Club Prado. Larry Craig will spend his holidays with the L. F. Craigs at their home on 1257 Avenue Venetia. Asked what form of entertainment had been planned for Larry, [TEXT LOST] "that she'd saved up plenty of repair work around the house for him to do. But, she added, "you'd better not print that because if Larry sees it, he probably won't come home until Christmas!" * * * Here for the Florida-Miami game Saturday was Kirk Westcott, son of the R. J. Westcotts, 1428 Avenue Medina. He plans to return from the University of Florida Wednesday night and spend the Thanksgiving holidays with his parents. * * * Added to the list of the numerous University of Florida students who will come home for Thanksgiving is David Batcheller, son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Batcheller who have a home out on Sunset Road.

Fashion Fiesta Roster Called

Drums will start beating tonight for the "Fashion Fiesta", an extravaganza of styles to be staged in tropical tempo at the Country Club of Coral Gables December 16th. Fresh from the overwhelming success of their first fashion venture last Thursday, the committee today was ready to turn to new business--up-to-the-minute modes for the Christmas season. "All members interested in volunteering as models, as stage directors--or merely in volunteering advice are urged to attend the initial planning session at the Country Club tonight," said Mrs. Charles R. Harting, chairman. "These fashion shows are presented by members--for Club members and their guests," she added. "We want all to have a say and a part in them."

WHOA, COMET! SANTA TO MAKE 2-DAY STAND IN GABLES

Wuxtry! Wuxtry! Northern Union today flashed word direct from Gnome Man's Land, Arctic Regions, that Santa Claus will make Coral Gables a reindeer stop for the first time in history this Yuletide. The U-Tell-Him-A-Gram received in the newsroom of the Riviera-Times indicated that the old gentleman with the bright red suit and long white beard will conduct a personal survey to learn first hand what's wanted under Christmas trees in this poinsettia paradise. St. Nick will set up his listening post on Dec. 6th and again on Dec. 13th at his Gables sedeep headquarters, The Toy Wagon.

11-Year-Olds Fly To Columbus, O.

Miss Nancy Hughes and Miss Prudence Huff, both 11, winged out of Miami on a giant airliner Saturday morning for a Thanksgiving week visit in Columbus, Ohio. With the young Gables travelers went a "new look" wardrobe--courtesy of old friends. "The girls had not a smidgen of really warm winter clothing between them," explained Mrs. Van E. Huff, mother of Prudence. But friends and relatives of the Huffs and the Thomas Hughes, Nancy's parents, rallied to the rescue. "Out of the mothballs came jackets, topcoats, suits, wool skirts and dresses," Mrs. Huff related. "A tuck here, a hemline let down there--and the girls were completely equipped with 'new look' wardrobes." The girls will be guests of Nancy's grandmother, Mrs. Spangler Hughes.
