CORAL GABLES— SCORE CARD Olympic Boxing Tournament May Be Booked Into Coliseum

—By DON CUDDY It pays to have individuals like C. Robert Williams for chairman of the Coral Gables Sports Commission. The former Virginia boxing commission, football coach (at Clemson, South Carolina, and Virginia) and organizer of the Virginia State Baseball league, naturally has connections—and the possibilities are pretty good that those contacts may bring the Olympic Boxing Tournament to the Douglas Road Coliseum this winter and spring. Williams has an interesting letter from Norton Pritchett, Director of Athletics at the University of Virginia, and a prominent figure in the National A. A. U. boxing picture. Pritchett writes, in part: "I shall be willing to recommend your facilities and personnel to the Secretary of the Executive Committee at its meeting in Omaha. "One of the eastern cities (New York or Phildelphia) or a mid-western city (Chicago) might be considered more favorable by the Executive Committee because of their locations. On the other hand, I believe that Miami would appeal strongly because of other reasons." Points Up Value of Coliseum Well, it appears we have our foot in the door at least. There are plenty of obstacles, of course, but the fact that our neck of the woods might be favorably considered points up the value of having the Coliseum here in Coral Gables. Need Organization to Underwrite One of the details that needs to be settled before we can issue any definite invitation will be getting an organization to underwrite the program. That involves paying some of the expenses of the top-flight boxing teams that will send hopefuls down. Only the very top drawer amateur fighters in the land—Golden Gloves finalists and intercollegiate champions—will be eligible to compete for a berth on the team that will represent the United States at the boxing division of the Olympic games in England next summer. Good Youth Center Project The chances are pretty good that such an attraction would draw well over 5,000 people a night into the Coliseum. If some organization (the University of Miami sounds the most logical) would be interested in sponsoring the deal, it would make a wonderful project for raising money for the War Memorial Youth Center.

Three Distance Runs Feature Easy Victory

St. Theresa High school's football Musketeers cut another notch in their claim to the high-scoring championship of the South Florida Catholic League with a 32-0 triumph over SS Peter-Paul's Panthers at the St. Theresa field Sunday before the largest fair-weather crowd of the season. Captain Bill Frazel claimed a pair of the Musketeers' five touchdowns with plunges from the four and ten-yard lines to give the local team a lead that was never threatened and, just to keep in shape, Bert Stahl, Bill Edwards and Tom Fitzgibbon added the trio of converters on a screen-pass good for 54 yards, and two triple reverses that turned into 31 and 52-yard scoring trips. The SS. Peter's Panthers never got started in the ball game as the Homenoken ground out quick-opening thrusts good for the morale of the scoreboard in every period except the third. Musketeers Block Well The Musketeers, who heretofore have used a concentrated plunging and passing attack to roll up their scores, dropping one each to South Broward and all-conquering Gesu, showed plenty of effective blocking and polished ball handling when they were on the move. On Stahl's screen-pass dash, Bert had only to catch Fitzgibbon's flip over the heads of the charging blue and gold line and follow his nine-man interference for a few yards before he was legging it for pay dirt without much attention from any of the bewildered Panthers. Bill Edwards got the same kind of support after taking the ball off on the first triple-reverse. Bill Roberts, the eighth-grade prodigee who won his spurs against St. Anthony's last week, set up the dash by returning a punt to the enemy 31-yard line. Fitzgibbon Stiff-Arms Across But the most spectacular scoring run was turned in by co-captain Tom Fitzgibbon, who stiff-armed a pair of Panther defenders out of his way on the excursion for the final touchdown. Francis Knauer, the Musketeers' place-kicking specialist, added three bonus point-afters to the 32-point total. If the Olympic boxing tournament is held at the Coliseum this winter and spring, local fight fans will see the University of Miami's intercollegiate heavyweight champion, Art Saey, battling for a berth on the team which will represent this country in England next summer.

Deliberations Started By Sports Commissioners

The Coral Gables' Sports Commission will hold its second meeting Tuesday night at the city hall in an attempt to draft some concrete proposals to present before the city commission regarding its regulatory powers and responsibilities. At an organizational meeting Friday, Nov. 21, C. R. Williams, former Virginia boxing commissioner and long an outstanding figure in southern football and baseball circles, was elected chairman, Andrew N. Houston, former city commissioner, was named vice-chairman, and Bill Hartnett was named secretary of the organization. Other members of the commission, will operate in a similar manner as the Transportation and Parks commissions, are: Carl A. Singleton, Harry Morgenthaler, Robert G. Venn, and L. E. Westerdahl. On the agenda for tomorrow night's deliberation is the reading of various charters for boxing commissions, including the one now in effect for the City of Miami. Williams said that is the quickest and surest way to get all of the aims of the commission down on paper. The proposals will be presented at the next meeting of the city commission on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and it was believed that several additional meetings of the sports commission would be necessary before that date to get all the details of operation settled.

Grimes Bumped By Volmer In Granada Net Play

Larry Grimes, the 16-year-old Granada "regular" who carded an 81 to win the qualifying round medal in the Country Club of Coral Gables Men's Golf Association championship tournament, dropped into the consolation bracket Sunday by bowing to Dr. W. Volmer, 2-up, in first round play. Contractors Settle Rivalry Coral Gables' big contractors, Lyle Roberts and Frank Sessler, were matched to settle their rivalry in the championship and the trip was even until the last hole when Sessler's "foundation caved in" and Roberts claimed the match one-up. Roberts will be paired with Walter Shiner, who beat Jimmy Campbell, 3-2, while Harry Wheeler, a default winner, will be tested by Dr. Volmer. Bill Gorman and Frank Howard went into the second with Gorman coming home a 2-1 winner. He will be against Gordon Taylor, (a bumped Frank Spencer, 4-3) in the quarter-finals to be played this week. Only two other entries remained in the upper bracket after yesterday's first-round play. J. F. Erb was one-up over Bob Searle and A. C. Simpson squeezed past Dick Wallace, 4-3. They are another pairing due to tee off against each other before Sunday. Pairings for the consolation bracket play, as announced by Leonard Ott, Granada pro, are: Wilson vs. Lally; Campbell vs. Sessler; Howard vs. Spencer; and Searles vs. Wallace.

Carr, Pope, Vetter Win Riviera ABC Golf Tournament

Tournament match play at the Riviera Country Club entered its last phase Sunday with the winners of the Class championships and finalists in the Senior tournament decided. William Carr edged Wilson Leary, 6-5, to claim the consolation prize in the championship round of the Club and Davis L. B. Pope beat R. E. Marshall, 3-2, in the Class A bracket; Dr. Karl Vetter wrestled the Class B title from B. G. Moore, 3-1; and in the C class Dr. G. A. Mitchell got by Walter Humkey, 3-1. Cy Moak and George Kirkland finished the third round of the top Senior tourney with victories over J. H. McCaskill and Irving Thomas, and they will meet this week to determine the winner. In the 50-60 year-old age bracket, L. H. Pope will be after his second championship when he takes on Sam Anderson. Anderson won his way to the finals with a 2-1 over John Sullivan Sunday.

Gulfstream Counts 92 Jocks Ready

A total of 92 jockeys will be on hand for opening day of Gulfstream Park's 40-day winter racing season, according to officials of the seaside course. The silk-clad youngsters are coming from all sections of the country, converging on Gulfstream Park and the December 1 inaugural. Topping the lineup of riding talent are Ted Atkinson and J. H. Jessop, leading riders of the past two seasons and high up in the 1947 averages. Jessop clinched the 1945 title at Gulfstream Park, while Atkinson has also been performing over the local course for the past several seasons. Another champion in the ranks is Johnny Adams who first won the title in 1937 and then returned in 1942 and 1943 to duplicate his feat. A glimpse through the line-up of available riding talent for the December 1-January 15 meeting finds the following names: Johnny Adams, Ray Adair, Johnny Breen, Leon Barber, Mike Basile, Robert Bernhardt, Herb Claggett, Mike Corona, Mike Caffarella, Jimmy Duff, Doug Dodson, Harold Featherston, Charles Givens, Joe Jacobs, Ira Hanford, Lee Haskell, Paul Keiper, Bobby Martin, Conn McCreary, Tom Malley, Henri Mora, Don Padgett and Elwood Polk.
