Ware Window Makes Debut; Gables Pioneer Heads Firm
R. E. Olson, sales manager of Sheffield-Briggs Steel Products, Inc., Miami and Fort Lauderdale, demonstrates the simple dual-driven operation of the Ware window to Peggy Harpole, beautiful Coronet model. SHEFFIELD-BRIGGS DISPLAYS NEW AWNING-TYPE INNOVATION The Ware aluminum awning-type window—which bears the name of Willard Ware, pioneer Coral Gables business man—had its first public showing yesterday as the National Home Builders Show opened in Bayfront Park, Miami. The show continues through Saturday of this week. The new window is manufactured by Ware Laboratories, of which firm Ware is president. Sheffield-Briggs Steel Products, Inc., distributor for Ware Aluminum windows announce that this special window will be on display in their booth at the Home Builders Show. Ware has achieved a favorable reputation with the construction industry throughout Florida by virtue of the Ware aluminum casement-type window. This precision built, custom styled, trouble free casement is a typical example of Ware engineering and craftsmanship. Thousands of satisfied owners of Ware aluminum casements will testify to the high quality of this product. Add to Interest Months of experimentation, design and re-design by Ware engineers have culminated in the production of the Ware awning-type window. Designed for use with buildings of modern style, they are equally adaptable to conventional types of architecture, and whether open or shut, they add a distinctive note of interest to the exterior of the building. Ware aluminum awning-type windows permit wide latitude in both illumination and ventilation, harmonizing with the trend to picture windows and all-glass walls. The tilted sash deflects air upward and keeps the air at the ceiling circulating without need for fans. Featured in this unusual fenestration are extra-heavy aluminum alloy extrusions which are especially designed to meet the rigid engineering requirements of this revolutionary product. Electronic flash welding joins all corners of the frame and ventilators. All hardware is comprised of either stainless steel or aluminum, and no metal which can rust is used in this window or furnished for installation purposes. Dual Driven The Ware aluminum awning-type window is dual driven from a single rotating arm which permits instantaneous response of all ventilators at the slightest effort. Of primary importance is the fact that no painting is required for the Ware, strong aluminum alloy used in the construction of this window will resist the corrosive effects of Southern Florida's marine atmosphere to a greater degree than any other metal now used in window construction. Substantiating proof of the corrosive resisting qualities of the Ware aluminum awning-type window will be demonstrated at the show. D. B. Sheffield, Sheffield-Briggs Steel Products, Inc., states that one of the most important features of the Ware aluminum awning-type window is the elimination of risk of water damage.
Eavesdropping Made Fun By Miss Jackson's Songfest
BY PEGGY GORDON Riviera-Times Columnist It isn't every neighbor that has the rare privilege of listening to a songfest by some of the area's better known musicians, but it was our good fortune to be near enough to hear some of the lyrical strains streaming from the home of Ruby Pierce Jackson. Miss Jackson, who is professional known as one of Miami's leading choral directors for the past 25 years, had a gathering of 18 musicians and music lovers. Sharing in the honors and in the fun was husband John Brain. Miss Olga Santini of Tercia Avenue climaxed the evening with a solo performance of an Italian aria. Besides regularly directing the choir at the First Christian Church, Miss Jackson recently directed for William Lee, who was unexpectedly called away, by directing the choir at the Coral Way Presbyterian Church on Tuesday. Reunions "Whether you want us or whether you don't we are coming to visit you," was the more than welcome telegram received by Mrs. Mildred V. MacLeod, 5748 S. W. 31st Street from her famous granddaughter, Mildred MacLeod, and well-known trailer band Harry Clock, who is with Universal and MGM. It has been 12 years since the last family reunion and it will make this Thanksgiving a memorable one. Mildred MacLeod was best known in the lead of "The Little Angel," one of Broadway's most famous productions. One of her more recent performances was in "No More Ladies" which played in Chicago not long ago. Warren Canady, who commutes regularly between Chicago and Miami is being eagerly awaited for a family reunion this Thanksgiving by Mrs. Canady and son, Jack. Along in February, Mr. Canady hopes to say good-bye to the Windy City and join his family here permanently. Barbeque An invitation to a barbeque, issued several years ago but interrupted through war and various other conditions, was finally a reality at our house Saturday evening. Emmett Kehoe, an old friend who is a past master at barbecuing chickens with a secret garlic sauce, played chef much to the palatable pleasure of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Stephens, Dr. and Mrs. Roy Bovard, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kehoe and Dr. and Mrs. Wiley Sams. We hope it won't take seven years again.
Hindu Co-Ed in U. S. Looks at New Look
PALO ALTO, CAL. (UP)—Even if American women do solve their great controversy of ankle length knee length and points-in-between lengths for their hemlines, they still will be incorrect, according to Miss Meha Yodh, 20, first Indian woman student to enroll at Stanford University. "The length of Miss Yodh's dress, if she cares to be truly correct as well as feminine, is floor length," the black-eyed Miss Yodh said. A Hindu of the Brahmin caste, Miss Yodh intends to stick to her traditional Indian dress during her stay in the United States—with the hemline of her gracefully draped magenta and gold sari sweeping the ground. "Western dress is not temperamentally or culturally suited to the Indian temperament," she said. "Besides I can get dressed in half the time of the other co-eds."
Hobson's Choice Peace, Magistrate Rules
COLORADO SPRINGS, Col. (UP)—Hugh Crow decided that his neighbor made too much noise while he was trying to sleep. Crow hit the neighbor, John R. Schaper, in the face with a hammer. When the two were brought before Police Magistrate Robert Schaper, Crow charged Hobson with disturbing the peace. Hobson, in turn, charged Crow with assault. The magistrate fined both $15 and suspended sentence when they both promised to get along peaceably in the future.
Six $1,200 educational scholarships, each covering two years of college work at Riddle Inter-American College in Coral Gables, are open to 1947 Florida High School students, it was announced by John Paul Riddle, chairman of the school.

Church Plans Ground Breaking Next Sunday
Members of the congregation of the First Methodist Church of South Miami were preparing today for the ground-breaking ceremonies next Sunday when construction of their Chapel and Fellowship Hall will begin. At a dinner last week, over $17,000 was pledged for the new building. Speaker at last week's dinner was Rev. Laurie Ray of Lake Wales, Florida. Guests were Dr. Henry Blackburn, assistant superintendent of the Miami District of the Methodist Church; Mrs. C. E. Snyder, president of the Coral Gables Woman's Club, and Mr. and Mrs. Omar Stang. Mr. Stang is president of the South Miami Chamber of Commerce. Other guests were County Commissioner Earl Rader, Mr. Braman Harris, superintendent of South Miami Schools and Dr. Raymond Van Duesen of the University of Miami. It has been demonstrated that under intense heat, and in the presence of oxygen or air, the carbon in a diamond unites with the oxygen and the gem burns itself into a black, worthless crisp.
Christian Science Lecture Presented In Grove Church
"Scientific religion meets the most exacting demands of modern thought," a capacity audience was told Sunday afternoon by Peter B. Biggins, C.S.B., of Seattle, Wash. in a Christian Science lecture at Second Church, Scientist, Coconut Grove. Speaking on the subject of "Christian Science: the Religion of Today," Biggins said that a scientific religion meets the demands of modern thought in these ways: It satisfies the deepest longings of the human heart. It appeals to sound reason. It affords the solution of problems in human activities and relationships. It ensures progress, the basis of true self-health, security, and progress. It government, prosperity, complete satisfaction, and abiding happiness. It promotes mutual understanding among men and nations. Christian Science measures up to these reasonable requirements by extending its ministry to the healing of sickness as well as of sin; it is essentially the religion of today. Quoting from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 150) by Mary Baker Eddy, Biggins said: "Today the healing power of Truth is widely demonstrated as an immanent, eternal Science, instead of a phenomenal exhibition. Its appearing is the coming anew of the gospel to 'on earth peace, good-will toward men.'" Mrs. Eddy, the speaker said, had gained the true vision of the Christ, the spiritual idea of God. Her spiritual perception grew even clearer as her experience ripened and her demonstration advanced. John on Patmos recorded his vision of "a new heaven and a new earth," and his book of Revelation remains as part of the canonical writings now comprised in the Bible. So, too, Mrs. Eddy wrote her vision, and it is preserved in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mr. Biggins declared. Here she records the reality of being, the true nature of God, man, and the universe as spiritual, harmonious, and immortal; and she makes clear the application of this truth to the healing of disease and to the solution of all human problems. Biggins is a members of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
Men Can Learn From Termites, Gables Teacher Tells
Men can learn from termites and ants and also from other animals that have 50 million years or more of social experience. This, in part, was the theme stressed by Dr. E. M. Miller, Zoologist at the University of Miami, in his presidential address before the Florida Academy of Sciences at its annual banquet in Tallahassee Friday night. Miller discussed the anatomy and physiology of organisms and societies of animals, and pointed out the importance of studies in this field as a background for understanding and improvement of human social relations. Said he, "I am convinced that one of the potentially most productive opportunities for scientific investigation now lies in this area between bio-ecology and psycho-sociology." "Political and economic problems are essentially problems of group behavior. Today in human society, the amount of power wielded by and the specialization of individual units in the society have increased faster than coordinating devices which can integrate these units into a whole. Dr. Miller allowed himself to speculate, as he said, that humans in order to save themselves, may have to develop a "cooperative vaccine" which can "inoculate international delegates and leaders against their own egoistic drives." "We have spent billions on nuclear fission; now why not billions on methods of social coordination and harmony?"
Florida has approximately 6,000,000 acres under organized fire protection with private land-owners.
