Carifeo Elected U-M Captain for Alabama Game
George Carifeo, outstanding University of Miami "watch charm" guard, was elected by his teammates to captain the Hurricanes in their most up-hill battle of the season against the University of Alabama Friday night in the Orange Bowl, Coach Jack Harding announced this morning. It marks the second time this year that the Haverhill, Mass., regular has been chosen to lead the Hurricanes. In line with the coaching staff's policy of selecting a senior for the honor in each game, Carifeo was appointed to the post for the Miami-Cincinnati game in Ohio on Nov. 8. This time the choice was by ballot of the entire varsity squad. Harding also indicated this morning that he will begin tapering the squad off for the season's finale this afternoon with heavy running drills but no contact work slated. Coach Harold "Red" Drew of Alabama announced from Tuscaloosa this morning that he will start his first string lineup against the Hurricanes, taking no chances on Miami tarnishing the Tide's Sugar Bowl glory. The Red Elephants' offense is patterned after the Notre Dame box formation, scouts told the Miami grid squad in practice Monday, and that the most predictable thing that can be said about the attack is that the shift is always from the T-formation. The Hurricane scouts have plenty of respect for the incomparable Hurlin' Harry Gilmer and Company, who plastered Louisiana State 41-12 Saturday to earn the bowl invite, but figure the most sensible way to make a showing against the Tide is to throttle down the ground attack, in which Gilmer shares the honors with rough-neck fullback Lowell Tew. But just where to start shoring up the defense against a team that was able to let its reserves coast against the Bengals, considered one of the finest teams in the South, is a dilemma for the woefully inconstant Hurricanes. Key to the Tide's rampages in the last six games after absorbing two upsets by Tulane and Vanderbilt, is the rhinoceros-like forward wall. In 1945, as sophomores, the 'Bama line rated second only to the mighty West Point Cadets at their best. (Continued on Page Seven)
CORAL GABLES SCORE CARD
By DON CUDDY The Coral Gables Athletic Commission (for that's the official name even if it won't fit in the headlines) made some encouraging progress during its second meeting at city hall last night. Mayor W. Keith Phillips addressed the seven-member commission before the body took up the serious business of organizing professional sports supervision so that it will become a credit to the city. "We want to encourage and foster clean sports here in the Gables," his honor said, "and you gentlemen have the responsibility to the citizens, the promoters, matchmakers and participants of a vigilance committee." There has to be a start somewhere on a project as complicated as this, and it was made by appointing Billy Regan temporary director with authority to appoint and supervise all officials for the Carnera-Lewis wrestling show at the Coliseum next Tuesday and the first boxing card, listed for Dec. 16. Regan Most Competent Director Regan is the most logical man to handle the details of seeing that things are done up Coral Gables style. He's one busy individual, what with being secretary of the City of Miami Boxing Commission, boxing coach at the University of Miami, and a city fireman, but getting jobs done is Billy's forte and so the entire operation "Best Foot Forward" is in good hands. Taking the Bull By the Horns Now, the Commission could have easily backed out of the first couple of shows, begging lack of time to get organized. But they went ahead to have as much supervision as possible before any bad practices get started here. The ordinance which will recognize the commission will be on first reading at the next city commission meeting, Tuesday, Dec. 2. As a de facto group, several members of the commission have proven that they know their way around and will make a minimum of mistakes. The way the ordinance may read when presented for ratification by the senior body, the Athletic Commission will have authority to regulate all athletic contests including amateur boxing and wrestling in our town, which will affect professional golf and tennis to a certain degree. That increases the scope of their work considerably, but I think they've got both the appetite to finish the job right and the ability. One suggestion that was made that might be worth looking into was that Coral Gables join the state boxing federation which is being formed. Cities already in are Tampa, West Palm Beach and Orlando. Being in the federation would make Gables bars on fighters mandatory throughout the organization. That's just another detail of the many that have to be worked out.
GULFSTREAM PARK, HALLANDALE, FLA.—Shining silks and shining sails will form an unusual and inspiring picture during the 1947-48 Gulfstream Park racing season, December 1 through 15. Shown above is the finish of a hard fought race, with a flotilla of moth sail-boats in the background, providing a scenic effect to the daily sport. Gulfstream Park this season inaugurates the Miami racing year, and many of the country's top thoroughbreds are on the grounds, awaiting the inaugural bugle.
Beachcomber, Sooner Select Meet Again at Biscayne
Beachcomber, Paul Sutherland's Biscayne Inaugural champion and winner of succeeding races until last Saturday night when he bowed to Sooner Select by a half-length in a thrilling finish, will be out to return to his winning ways tonight in the Biscayne Kennel club's featured ninth race. Again tonight he must meet the unbeaten Sooner Select which in their initial meeting, started fastest and held on to triumph in a major upset. However, Beachcomber definitely was running strongest at the end and in the great stretch drive had picked up one or more lengths. It looms a race in 31 4-5 seconds or less at 5-16 mile. Against this stellar pair will be a pair of courageous distance running female stars. One is My Barbara which has not been out of the money this meeting although just short of the winner's honors. The other is Gloria Ann, one of the meeting's limited three-time winners, but in her last, a 660-yard feature race victor at the same distance. The others include the rapidly improving Rolling Roy, He Hath, Truman and Mamaloo. Jonora Makes Debut The eighth also offers a highlight with Jonora, a several times stakes winner of the last two years, out in a seasonal debut against seven other first-division challengers. The first and tenth races again will be over the marathon Biscayne Course with proven entries of routers in both events. In addition to Jonora, there will be only four other seasonal first-starters.
Coach Harold "Red" Drew of the University of Alabama announced from Tuscaloosa this morning that he will start his first team against the Hurricanes Friday night, taking no chances that Miami will tarnish the Sugar Bowl glory earned by the Crimson Tide after a faltering early season.
