CORAL GABLES- SCORE CARD | Carnera Takes Wrestling Serious Even If Nobody Else Does

By DON CUDDY Contrary to Westbrook Pegler's appraising article, wrestlers are people . . . and in the case of Primo Carnera pretty interesting and affable individuals too. Yesterday "Da Preem" was in high humor (in fact, some of those present went out of their way to duck his good-natured back slaps) when he appeared for an interview over WBAY. Writers have called him a pathetic figure in the American sporting scene, a big but dumb joker who should have remained a circus strong man. A recent book is supposed to be based on the way racketeers fleeced him when he was boxing and left him poor. Well, the gargantuan is not poor any more—not in spirits, purse or condition. His ambition is to win the world's heavyweight (what else, at 265 pounds?) rasslin' championship, so he'll be the only man to ever have held both the boxing and wrestling titles. Before he started boxing, (around 1926) Carnera was a major European wrestler, and he still claims it as his first love, which he is going back to, as the saying goes. Wrestling, Primo comments, is more like sport than boxing. "Boxing . . . there's too many guys to pay off . . . hard to keep track of the guys you got to pay for this and that. In wrestling I do my work, I get paid, I go home." As for returning to the boxing game, that's no deal. According to the Italian giant, things were a lot tougher for the heavyweights when he was in his prime. "There was thirty, thirty-six good fighters around that I have to fight before I get to the top. Now, only maybe three of four real fighters before you can get a crack at the championship." Wrestling Style 'Secret Weapon' As for his meeting with "Strangler" Lewis tonight, Da Preem makes no predictions because so far they've only met socially. Neither would Carnera divulge what his best tactics were. It's sort of a "Secret Weapon" and he's saving it for the exhibition. Lewis is one of the stepping stones to a crack at the wrestling crown, but Carnera doesn't think it will be long before he makes the grade. He drew with Two-Ton Tony Galento in Newark a couple of weeks back, and that brought on the comment that maybe Carnera is a better wrestler after all than he was a boxer. If the game is a farce, then I don't believe anyone has told Primo about that part of it. Carnera naturally gets top billing for the Coliseum show, and the other half of the main attraction, Lewis, doesn't seem to mind. Some people recall that Lewis was wrestling back before 1900, which makes him one of the old school. He's a little more reserved than Primo, and both of them could pass for businessmen—if only they weren't so darn big. WBAY is going to broadcast the Carnera-Lewis rassle and I can't help thinking that it might almost be as much fun to listen to the grunt by groan as to see it. Then, however, you lose some of the savor of the ringside crowd; sometimes they put on as good an act as the men in the ring. Because of the elements that enter into the show, rasslin' fans are more loyal than any others with the possible exception of ice hockey mobs. It's a good send-off for the Coliseum.

MacDonald Nets 28 vs. Miami NAS

Coach Leo Boles' Riddle College basketball team began to look for bigger game today after hanging up a 95-42 triumph over the Miami Naval Air Station at Miami Edison High School gymnasium last night for their second straight lop-sided campaign of the season. Harvey MacDonald, former Red Raider captain and center for the Riddler's paced the jamboree with 28 points to tie a local collegiate scoring record established by Bob "Whitey" Campbell for the University of Miami last year. The undermanned Flyers found MacDonald's height under the basket too much for them and steadily lost ground to the Riddlers from the opening whistle. Bill Henderson for the losers was the only man to give the victor's any trouble all night as he accounted for 19 points. Play Southern Friday Friday the Leo Boles coached squad makes its first road trip, playing the Florida Southern Dreadnoughts at Lakeland. That will be the first real test of the season for them, before they return to the Edison High school gymnasium on Dec. 23 to play host to the Tampa Spartans. RIDDLE (95) G F P | M.N.A.S. SPORTS PARADE By Oscar Fraley

UP Sports Writer GRENLOCH, N.J., Dec. 2. (UP)— Jersey Joe Walcott didn't look anything like a man who was just three days away from the furious fists of heavyweight champion Joe Louis. He was placidly asleep. A sharp wind whistled around the little frame cottage which serves as the challenger's training headquarters high on a sandy hill. The quiet buildings of the now-idle amusement park stretched down to an oval lake below. "Plenty quiet here and it has put Jersey Joe in the right frame of mind," said Dan Florio, the little trainer, as he stared out the window. It was quiet. The wind and Walcott's regular breathing were the only sounds in the isolated and empty park. "He really thinks he'll win," Florio added in a voice which showed that he shared the heresy. "That's 95 per cent of the battle. The rest of the guys who fought Louis acted as if they were going to the jailhouse. Well, Walcott has been waiting a long time for this chance and he ain't gonna be froze up." Jersey Joe had taken a long walk before breakfast, been given a rubdown and now was sleeping quietly before his afternoon workout. The challenger's brain trust still was keeping him isolated from the questions of reporters. "Frame of mind, that's the thing," Florio said quietly in the hushed tone you use when a baby's sleeping. "The only thing we let him read are good stories about his ability. We tack them up on the wall." There weren't many hanging there. Bolstering the scantiness of these testimonials was a picture of Billy Conn landing a punch on Louis' jaw and the champion's eyes squinted shut. "Always closes his eyes when he's hit," the little trainer pointed out. "Naturally, we have been working on a few things up here which may win the fight. But I can't tell you what they are." Walcott's biggest secret weapon, evidently, will be top condition. The challenger has been working (Please turn to Page Seven)

Carnera-Lewis Mat Show Opens Arena

Primo Carnera, former heavyweight boxing champion who is now one of the nation's top performers in the grunt and groan industry, and Ed (Strangler) Lewis, one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, will square off in the main event of a wrestling exhibition that will introduce the Coral Gables Coliseum as an all sports arena tonight. Carnera and Lewis have been breaking attendance records from coast to coast for the past year but they have never met in the ring. Primo weighs only a few pounds more today than he did when he won the heavyweight title from Jack Sharkey in 1933. In two previous trips to Miami, the Ambling Alp defeated Jumping Joe Savoldi and Babe Sharkey. As a grappler, Primo is undefeated and only Two-Ton Tony Galento has been able to hold him to a draw. Most of his opponents have found his 265 pound, six foot six inch frame too much of a handicap. Lewis Five Times Champ Lewis won the world's heavyweight mat title no less than five times. From the 20's to the 30's he dominated the wrestling empire, defeating such greats as Jim Londos, Don DeNus, Wayne Munn, Gus Sonnenberg and Joe Stecher. Big Ed introduced the famed strangle-hold to the game that gave him his nick-name. Promoter Pat Malone who is staging the Coliseum show said that ticket sales are exceeding expectations and one of the largest wrestling crowds in Florida's history is anticipated. Supporting events, all scheduled for one-fall, 30 minute limit, pit Johnny "Flash" Clifford against the Flying Disc; Young Billy Sandow of Toledo meets Boston's Jow (Kilroy) Santos; Jack Schnabel tangles with Happy Davis and Jack Bloomfield takes on Duke DeKoma in the opener. Ed "Red" Cameron, former U-M football great will referee the main event. The work of shifting locomotives is carried out on British railways in part by an ingenious device resembling a hand plough running on a track or the ground propelled by gasoline-electric motor with a pushing power of 150 tons or five carloads.

Six Teams Open Cage League Tonight

Six out of eight basketball teams are due to go to the post starting at 7 p.m. tonight to inaugurate the Coral Gables Municipal Basketball League at the Riddle College gymnasium in the Colonnade Building, on the corner of Coral Way and Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Eastern Airlines faces Friendly Bar in the first tilt, followed by Carl's Liquors and the Elks' Club at 8 o'clock, with the Jaycees winding up the evening against the Newman Club at St. Theresa church. The Friendly Bar quintet is largely made up of University football players like ends Ed Meyer, Ralph Fieler and Blackie DeBuene. When the Elks and Carl's clash, the individual battle will be between "Flip" Rosen, the Cleveland Indians baseball rookie and Paul Durkin, former captain of the St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) team and all-Pennsylvania center for 1942-43. The triple-header marks the first of such semi-weekly league games to be player every Tuesday and Thursday except for a two and a half week break from Dec. 18 until Jan 6 for the Christmas holidays. Sam Marzella and Joe Tatol are the referees for all league games.

All-Americans in Colored Classic

Two Miami All-Americans are expected to keep fans attending the colored Orange Blossom Festival at the Orange Bowl Saturday on the edge of their seats. Quarterback LeRoy Cromartie has been firing the ball with amazing regularity to All-American end Traz Powell, left end, for the Florida A & M Rattlers of Tallahassee all season, and the duet is expected to team up again when they meet Hampton Institute of Virginia in the classic.

Thunderbird After Second Biscayne Feature Triumph

Thunderbird, Fred Whitehead's red brindle two-year-old son of the former great champion, Never Roll, will be out for his second straight feature race victory tonight in the Biscayne Kennel club ninth. In his last, this roster broke from the middle of the pack and was never headed to win by a long four lengths. He raced the 5-16 mile distance, the same course he will go tonight, in 32 1-5 seconds. Chief challenger to him in that race, Jovial John, will be in tonight's entry along with the popular first-division racers, Hollendale, Saddle, Tyree, Porky, Lucky Ally and the high ranking Jonora. Three First Starters in Field There will be three seasonal first-starters in the list of 80, one of these, Just Gabe, being in the first race first half of the daily double and the other two, Mabel Alone and Sue Freem, making their first start in the marathon Biscayne Course fifth race. All three were popular racers of a year ago. Ready Hook, the former Derby champion, will be out again tonight in the final tenth, where the distance running star will be traveling his favored 1,815-foot derby course.
