Wildcats vs. Wildcats In Lakes Bowl Kentucky 'Arrives' 2 Years Ahead of Schedule

By JOHN G. DIETRICH United Press Sports Writer LEXINGTON, KY., Dec. 2. (UP)—Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant had Kentucky's Wildcats back at work today preparing for the first football bowl game in the school's history—a debut that came off two years ahead of schedule. When defeat-weary alumni brought Bryant in from Maryland in 1946, he told Wildcat backers that it would be at least 1948 and probably 1949 before his team would arrive. The Wildcats list the University of Miami on the 1948 schedule. Interested alumni, a top-notch coach and a few good boys proved the formula that put Kentucky into the Great Lakes bowl against the Villanova Wildcats at Cleveland Saturday. Team Belongs to Alumna In point of fact, the team belongs to the alumni. A state law limited faculty members' salaries to $5,000 per year. A top-flight coach was unavailable at that price, so the Kentucky Athletic Association was formed and incorporated. The KAA pays the bulk of Bryant's salary and generally determines athletic policy. University President Herman L. Donovan is a KAA board member. Students Disclaim Semi-Pro Tag It has been said that KAA simply pays the university for the use of Stoll field and the name, but this actually is no more true at Lexington than any number of other colleges. The players are bona fide students, eligible to compete under rules of the Southeastern Conference, and Kentucky students would be irritated at any suggestion that the Wildcats were not "our team." Bryant, an aggressive, determined individual who played his greatest game for Alabama with a broken leg, wasn't optimistic about his team last September. But Jay Rhodemyre proved to be a center of All-America caliber, Wash Serini developed to be a smashing terror at tackle, and triple threat Don Dopey Phelps showed he was one of the fastest backs in Dixie. Added to that trio were two linemen who, with Rhodemyre and Serini, were named on the United Press All-American squad. These were Leo Yarutis, a 180-pound guard, and Wallace (Wah Wah) Jones, a six-foot four-inch end who perhaps has won fame on Kentucky's great basketball team. Jones suffered an ankle injury in mid-season, then went to the hospital for an appendectomy. Since then he has played only a few moments of the Tennessee game, but still leads the team in pass receiving. He should be ready for Villanova.

Two Drivers Held After Truck, Auto Crash on Valencia

A collision at the corner of Avenue Valencia and Galiano St. last night resulted in both drivers involved being booked by Gables police today on charges of reckless driving and causing an accident. Dale L. Harvey, 34, of 836 S.W. 3rd St., driver of an International truck belonging to the National Brands Co., was charged with failing to yield the right-of-way and causing an accident while the charge against 19-year-old Edward P. Naus, Jr., of Hollywood is exceeding the speed limit and causing an accident. Truckman Harvey, who was traveling east on Valencia, told police he halted for the stop sign, didn't see any other cars, and proceeded. Naus, driver of the second vehicle, said the truck had failed to stop. Naus' car had skidded for 30 feet in an effort to avoid the crash, police said. Both the car and the truck traveled about 40 feet after the impact had occurred. The two vehicles were badly smashed up.

Sports Parade (Continued from Page Six)

furiously for eight weeks, running, hiking, boxing, gym work and calisthenics. "We're over the hill now," Florio sighed. "Today we'll do about eight rounds of work including our final boxing. Wednesday we'll run three miles or so and just loosen up. Thursday we'll go into New York for Friday's weigh-in. "Just have to be cautious now that Jersey Joe doesn't go stale," he continued. "Walcott's about 195 now. He'll be about 194 for the fight. But we don't care what he weighs. Just so he's right." The telephone rang and Walcott kept right on snoring. "Have to shut that off every night at 8:30," Florio said when he hung up. "You'd be surprised how many people call up at night to wish us luck." The trainer picked up a Thanksgiving card from his daughter. On it was attached a miniature good luck charm. "If the charm doesn't work, use this," Dan's daughter had written. An arrow pointed to a miniature gun taped to the card's edge. "Jeez," Florio grunted. "I wish it was Saturday. All my worries would be off my mind." With that he lapsed into thoughtful silence. The only sounds were the whistling wind, inside and out.

How you can be in a lot of places... at one time

• MEMO TO ADVERTISERS How you can be in a lot of places... at one time IF you could make regular, personal calls on your best customers and prospects and talk to them about your merchandise and service, that would be the most effective kind of selling. Of course that is not possible but you can give a friendly, newsy talk about your business to the best families in our community through the advertising columns of this newspaper. You can describe your merchandise or service, quote prices and sell to a lot of people at one time. But you wouldn't make a lot of personal calls at random, would you? It's just as important that you know where your advertising goes. That's the reason this newspaper is a member of the Audit Bureau of Circulations, so we can give you audited facts and figures about our circulation—where, how much, how obtained, how much people pay for this paper and other essential information that you should know and have a right to know when you make an investment in advertising. The Bureau is a cooperative association of 2000 publishers, advertising agencies and advertisers in the United States and Canada. Organized in 1914, its purpose is to furnish advertisers with verified information about the circulation of its publisher members. The Bureau maintains a large staff of auditors who, at regular intervals, audit the circulation records of each A.B.C. publication. With the facts thus obtained, published in A.B.C. reports, it becomes possible for advertisers to select media and buy space on the basis of known and verified circulation values.
