Housewives Cut Milk Purchases, Ponder Ways To Beat Price Hike
(Continued from Page One) When asked his customers' reaction to the price hike. Groceryman Gus told how his percentage of profit on gross business is affected. He still makes two cents on a quart, but with the raise, he'll make less on each $100 of milk sales. Gus had no advance notification of the new price schedule. His delivery man had said Saturday, in an off hand manner, "The price might go up two cents next week." When the delivery man showed up yesterday, he had the new schedule with him. Gus's patrons, he said, are mainly professional people or plasters, carpenters and other working people whose present wages are ample to absorb an extra two cents. "What is the man who makes less than I do going to do?" many patrons asked Gus. The Foremost Dairy's George Weissenborn, who heads the retail department, said he had two phone calls, both discontinuing milk deliveries. "If everybody does the same, we can get the price down," said one customer as he cancelled his account. "But the fall in deliveries is so far less than one percent," Weissenborn said. Housewives were planning, however, to cut down on milk all they could, and a decrease may be felt at the dairies by tomorrow or Thursday. "I'm cutting the family's milk consumption in half," said Mrs. W. F. Brown of 814 Pizarro Street. "If I didn't have children I'd cut it out entirely." Mrs. Fred B. Hartnett of 1412 Avenue Algeria takes nine quarts every other day, which means her milk bill will be up nine cents a day. With five boys between the ages of eight and 21 who are all big milk-drinkers, she doesn't see how she can get along on much less. She may be able to do with one quart less a day. "We're going to have to keep it down," she said. Mrs. Fitzgibbon, who would like to stop buying milk altogether, takes 12 quarts every second day, and still has to buy either two or three quarts more from the store. She's started using canned milk for cocoa. She has seven children of her own and two more who stay with her, so milk is a big item. The raise will cost her 20 cents a day unless she finds a way to slice the consumption.

Senator Kenneth S. Wherry Is America's Unhappiest Man
By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN UP Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Dec. 2. — (UP)—America's unhappiest man at the moment, I guess, is Sen. Kenneth S. Wherry of Neb., Republican. Free enterpriser. The lawgiver who did his utmost to kill OPA, who officiated joyously at the funeral services of rationing coupons, who . . . But you get the idea. In all the government there is nobody so bitterly opposed to federal controls of business as the gentleman from Pawnee City, Neb. So there he is in a cellar hearing room of the Senate, saying things that seared his soul. Nearly all the big oil companies, it turned out, had made a deal with the senate small business committee to spread out the fuel oil shortage as thinly as possible. This was a voluntary rationing scheme by the industry, itself, and the hot-tempered Sen. Wherry was smiling benignly. When, Blooie! Nothing Doing A big, bald, red-faced citizen identified himself as R. M. Bartlett, vice-president of the Gulf Oil Co. Nothing doing, he said. All his oil's been sold already and he's not going to invite law suits, taking it back from one customer and giving it to another. "Yes," cried Sen. Wherry (and try is the proper word), "but—what—if voluntary measures fail we may have to have (it hurt him to say it) federal control." Bartlett said a contract was a contract. He said an egg was difficult to unscramble. Then he touched one of the sorest spots of the government in this shivery winter of 1947. He said if the master minds kindly would quit fighting among themselves and put about 50 oil tankers back to carrying oil, nobody'd go cold this winter. Invites Policing "I do not believe in a police state," Sen. Wherry retorted, "but your kind of thinking just invites it." Barlett said he was sorry the senator felt that way. Sen. Wherry said he'd feel still sorrier if any more complaints piled up from frost-bitten clients of the Gulf Oil Co. This argument went on for a couple of hours, getting hotter as it went, if that's any comfort to householders whose oil tanks a' empty. And then it developed that the oil business is afflicted with a dark gray market, almost exactly like that of the shortage-plagued steel industry. Spot Premiums Howard P. Sears of the Sears Oil Co., Rome, N.Y., told about it. He's the middleman who trucks the oil to the furnaces of his customers, or would, if he could ge it. He told a tale of phone calls, certified checks, oil brokers, agents and bills from one oil company, and deliveries from another. He named names, listed dates, and charged that his involuntary adventures into the back yard of the oil industry forced him to pay premiums of 2 1/2c to 3 1/2c a gallon. One shipment, he said, cost hi $50,000 more than the standar listed price. "You ever phone this fellow here?" asked Sen. Wherry, indicating the pink-eared Barlett. "I tried to phone him," Sears said. "But I never got to talk to him. And if we don't get better cooperation from people like this Mr. Barlett (who sat in the next chair) we've got to have government controls. I'm willing to live and let live, but this man isn't." And there we were. With a vast supply of oil in tank cars at Gulf ports and no way of getting it to the eastern seaboard. One hundred war-time tankers have been ordered sold abroad, the Attorney General is trying to decide whether this is legal and at the moment 50 of these vessels are rusting a the docks. The prospects are goosepimply for everybody except Sen. Wherry; no matter how cold the radiators in his house at Pawnee City, he'll remain hot under the collar.
According to Harry McCarthy, INS staff correspondent, Florida is the only state in the southeast without a teacher shortage.
