Understanding Is Aim Of Chinese Firm Here, UN Delegate Declares at Fete

Close to 150 civic leaders of Coral Gables, Miami and Dade County and their wives were guests Saturday night at a dinner honoring Dr. P. W. Tsou, China's delegate to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Committee. Dr. Tsou came to Coral Gables to attend the opening of the first United States branch of the Ho Chong Company, importers, on Miracle Mile. He leaves today with Mrs. Tsou for China to report to his government. The envoy-banker declared that Coral Gables was chosen as site for the initial branch of the company in order to acquaint people of this city and South Florida in general with the art objects, silks, tea, handicraft work and delicacies which China can provide in return for exports of machinery from this country. Understanding Is Aim "But business is not the whole consideration," Dr. Tsou told his listeners. "It is our hope that establishing of the Ho Chong Company will further exchange of ideas and friendship between our two countries and lead to an even closer appreciation and understanding between the people of America and the people of China." Introduced by toastmaster A. B. Curry, Dr. Bowman F. Ashe assured Dr. Tsou that the bond between Coral Gables and his countrymen had been cemented during the war years when Chinese airmen attended navigation classes at the University of Miami. "The American people will not forget how Chinese patriots at risk of their own lives, gave shelter to our downed fliers and sped them via routes sometimes as long as 3,000 miles, to safety," the University president added. "Our airmen were passed along from home to home and village to village under the very eyes of the common enemy," Dr. Ashe said. "Betrayal might have been the easy way—but they were not betrayed." Other speakers who paid tribute to Dr. Tsou included County Solicitor Robert Taylor, Charles Layden of the Miami Daily News, and Mr. and Mrs. How Leo Gum, hosts for the evening.

'U' Schedules Two Concerts This Week

Violinist Mischa Elman and Guitarist Tiant Rivero will be presented by the University of Miami in two separate recitals this week. Elman will appear this evening at 8:30 in the auditorium of the Miami Senior High School, and Rivero's recital will be given Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the University's lecture hall, main campus. After more than 40 years on the concert stage, the great violinist and his "Elman tone" are world famous. He made his first attempt at the violin when only three years of age, and his talent came under the instruction of the late Leopold Auer when he was ten. Two years later he attracted the notice of the musical world with his Berlin debut, and his fame in this country started with his New York concert at the age of 17. That first season in the United States he played 22 concerts in New York alone, setting a record which is still unmatched. Cuba's well-known guitarist recently made an appearance in the music center of his native country, the Sociedad Pro-Arte Musical. He has established his fame in the countries of Central and South America, where he has performed frequently.

Gableite, Broker Both Freed in Tiff

A resident of the Antilla Hotel and a downtown pawnshop proprietor swore out disorderly conduct warrants against each other this weekend, but the pair of charges was dismissed in Miami City Court by Judge Cecil C. Curry this morning. The dispute between Gables resident G. A. Baulot and hockshop-keeper Willie Goldstein had begun when Baulot told a man with a pair of binoculars he could give him a better price than the pawn-broker. Goldstein, it was reported, had taken offense at this statement and ordered Baulot to leave his store. Goldstein said people like Baulot "cut into his business." Baulot said in court that he was assistant director of sports for the Cuban government.

(Continued from Page One) astrous floods," Rader declared. "The answer lies in a realistic approach to flood control through water conservation." The engineer explained that by government backing of this vast area water could be conserved to prevent drought and released, under control, during excessive rainy seasons. Much of the land involved is not suited for agricultural purposes, Rader said. The polls will open at 11 a. m. Tuesday and will close at 7 p. m. Approximately 125,000 persons are qualified to vote in this election according to Carl Holmer, Jr., supervisor of registrations. The county commission estimates that the cost of the election will be approximately $10,000.

Hamshaw told police that the Negro, dressed in old clothes, would become surly when he was refused the change.
