VOILER FOILED — AGAIN Gagan Expected To Favor Louis In Hearing Today

Sports Parade (Continued from Page Six) then the mob scene from Aida ranks a rank second. And in that connection, Old Jersey Joe set a track record. Consider that he was meeting the most popular champion in the history of the ring. Louis has held the crown 10 years and never has there been any stigma connected with his rags to riches rise, one which is folk lore to the American negro. By rights there should have been vocal support for the champ. But it seemed as if every one of the 18,194 paid customers was pulling for the hopeless challenger. And as the rounds were tolled, the chant for Walcott reached a frenzy which approached mass hysteria. It hemmed you in until you could hardly breathe and your heart pounded madly. One man who long has worshipped at the Louis fistic altar sat beside me with eyes bulging like saucers and kept praying aloud: "Please don't get cocky, Walcott. Oh please be careful." The noise in that 15th round rose to a crashing crescendo. It was not blood lust. They were cheering a man who had won a new champion crowned in the lowly underdog and they were electrified. When they were wrong, by the votes of two judges, they felt that they and Joe Walcott, had been the victims of grand larceny. In this they were joined by the radio listeners and newspaper watchers—and even those who simply heard it secondhand. The universal today is "What did you think of the fight?" This is the way I saw it. For 15 rounds Louis in the role of the chair waiting for Louis to lower the boom. It never fell. Meanwhile, Walcott was dancing, feinting and running. He'd feint sideways and run and do it again until Louis dropped his guard with a puzzled frown. But when Louis did drop his hands, Walcott was ready and, instead of fleeing, suddenly shifted like fluid lightning and looped in a shocking right hand. That right put Louis on the deck twice. It was a close fight. I scored it seven for Walcott, six for Louis and two even, but those knockdowns made a tremendous difference and I feel Walcott was the winner. Having made that clear, I can safely attend today's hearing, backed up by some millions, but not Monroe, Forbes—or Eagan. VOILER FOILED — AGAIN Gagan Expected To Favor Louis In Hearing Today By JACK CUDDY UP Sports Writer NEW YORK, Dec. 8 — (UP) — Arguments about the fight between Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott may continue for years; but Eddie Eagan, chairman of the New York Boxing Commission, was expected to announce today that Louis officially is still heavyweight champion of the world. Harry Voiler, the Miami promoter, who would have staged the return Rocky Graziano-Tony Zale middleweight fight at the Orange Bowl on Feb. 12 if the Miami commission had sanctioned it, was in New York trying to interest Louis and Walcott in a return bout at the Bowl on the same date. Marshall Miles, Louis manager, kayoed Voiler's plans by stating, "We are not interested in a Miami fight. We want to fight Walcott at Yankee Stadium next June." Voiler said the Orange Bowl encounter—before 65,000 spectators could draw more than $1,000,000. Miles replied that the return bout at Yankee Stadium could draw more than $2,000,000. Eagan was expected to announce the decision after a brief hearing at which Walcott, Manager Joe Webster, and at least one attorney had petitioned that on the basis of points and on the basis of the opinion of the majority of fans and sports writers, Friday night's decision favoring Louis should be reversed. Boxing men agreed that there wasn't one chance in 10,000 that the decision of the two ring judges would be reversed to agree with the vote of referee Ruby Goldstein, who had favored challenger Walcott. Appeal to NBA for Walcott Meanwhile, Abe J. Greene of Paterson, N. J., National Boxing Association commissioner and president of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission, appealed from the Camden veterans' action committee. Although Greene is boxing commissioner for the state of New Jersey, in addition to being president of the N. B. A., it seemed virtually certain that he would take no action on a problem that was New York State's "baby." New York state is not a member of the N. B. A.

Cage Favorites Start Skirmishes

By EARL WRIGHT UP Sports Writer NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UP)—Kentucky's basketball team was off and running like a blue grass horse today, apparently determined to pace the nation and wipe out the bitter defeat suffered last season at the hands of Utah in the Madison Square Garden Invitational. Coach Adolph Rupp's Kentuckians, who meet DePaul Wednesday night at Louisville, steamrolled Tulsa twice last week, winning 72 to 18 and 71 to 22. In the Rocky Mountain area, Utah's national invitational champions started the long road toward a possible title clash with Kentucky by swamping Montana State, 73 to 34. The Utes, with Arnie Ferrin and Vern Gardner back from last year's team, are out to wrest the Rocky Mountain conference crown from defending champion Wyoming. Wyoming gets its first test against Colorado State this week, while Denver continues its eastern tour against Georgetown tonight, Hamilton Wednesday and Marquette. Midwest Rolling Midwest teams also began feature competition with Notre Dame scheduled at Illinois tonight, and Michigan-Western Michigan, Notre Dame-Northwestern Minnesota-Nebraska, and Ohio State-Marquette billed Saturday. Minnesota, a Western Conference favorite, got away to a bad start, losing to St. Louis last week, 50 to 42,while Indiana defeated DePauw, 59 to 43, and Wisconsin, the defending champion, beat Marquette, 57 to 50, in other major games.

(Continued from Page Six) with 70-74 and totals of 276 worth $700 each. Henry Ransom of Ravina, Tex., carded a 70 yesterday for a 277 total to finish fifth for $500. Frank Stranahan of Toledo, O., the top 72s yesterday for a 279. He fired a 69 yesterday.

Neff, Robinson Place 9th, 11th In FECPL Match

(Continued from Page Six) the meet, and Gorham was second in the expert rankings. Neff was awarded the first prize in the Masterclass division and Robinson was in the Sharpshooter second class division. Prizes consisted of gun boxes for top class winners and silver trophies for second place winners. GABLES' gun fair debut was awarded Mario Roviverosa, of Havana, who tallied the low score for the day.

Leavitt Family Reunited After Seven Years

For the first time in seven years, the Leavitt sisters are all together again. That is, with the exception of one sister, Mrs. Clarence Tipple, who couldn't get here from Ohio. The scene of the reunion is at the home of one of the sisters, Mrs. R. F. Riley, 25 South Ludlum Road, South Miami. Visiting her for a week are Mrs. Carrie Shaw from Peoria, Illinois and Mrs. Elsie Born and Mr. and Mrs. Wessell Bolsen from Decatur, Illinois. Friday Mrs. Riley entertained her guests with a roast chicken dinner at her home. Mrs. Prudence Boland, and Miss Marguerite Leavitt, two of the Leavitt sisters from Homestead, and Dr. H. A. Leavitt, a brother from South Miami, were also present for the dinner. Yesterday Dr. Leavitt and his wife entertained all of the sisters with a dinner at their home on North Kendall Drive. Joining the family were Mr. and Mrs. Hal Leavitt and baby, Patty. Hal is the son of the H. A. Leavitts. Leaving Wednesday, Mrs. Shaw, Mrs. Born and Mr. and Mrs. Bolsen will drive back to Illinois.

Cudahy Scion Finds Music His Dish

MILWAUKEE, Dec. 8 (UP) — Cudahy Fortune was founded on the meat packing business and young Mike Cudahy of the present generation has a fondness for animal hides—on a drum in a hot band. Cudahy, 23, has realized an ambition to get away from the meat packing business and has wrapped up his talents in founding a phonograph recording company. Mike not only founded his own company but he has been the inventor of several novel devices in the recording business. Cudahy is the originator of the "plastic groove" in records and it isn't a hep-cat term, his company claims. It's a mechanical process whereby the same side of a record can play two distinct and separate recordings without turning the record over.

Lavish Trousseau Awaits Debut of Mesa Muchacha

When the Antonio Mesa baby is born sometime around the 15th of December, she'll be the owner of $100 worth of baby ribbon. Not only that, but she'll also have new baby paraphernalia costing $2,000 waiting for her to use. Of course it is understood that "she" will be a "she"—because a girl is what her parents are planning on! Baby Mesa's parents-to-be, Antonio Mesa and wife, Emila, and Antonio's mother, Mrs. Antonia Mesa, all from Havana, were recent guests in the home of Mrs. Margarita Peacock on 100 SW 29 Road. According to Mrs. Peacock, her guests bought $3,000 worth of baby things during the week they were here. They have returned to their home in Havana.
