Gableites End Northern Trips As Others Leave
The Breslin sisters are back in their home at 512 Avenue Alcazar. While Miss Ann J. Breslin was visiting her brother, Dr. Robert Breslin, in Providence, Rhode Island, her sister, Mrs. E. F. B. Anthony, was vacationing in Blowing Rock, N. C. Later Mrs. Anthony joined her sister in Providence and they drove to Canada with another sister, Mrs. R. W. Gilmore, where they stayed for a month. While there, they visited Lake Louise. On their return to Florida, Miss Breslin and Mrs. Anthony stopped by Cape Cod for two weeks, Portsmouth, Mass., for two weeks, and Pittsfield, Mass., for a few days. At the latter, they visited their brother, Dr. James Breslin. Mrs. Roy E. Richwine, who recently returned from Mechanicsburg, Penn. where she spent the summer, has as houseguests in he. Avenue Alcazar home, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hutton from Mechanicsburg. The Huttons and guests will leave Saturday for their Pennsylvania home where they will be for the Christmas holidays. Mrs. Richwine will return to her Gables home sometime around the first of February.
Family Reunions Highlight Journey
Mrs. Grace D. Bowers extended her Virginia vacation a month in hopes that construction work on a bus terminal near her Sunset Drive home would be completed. But she returned home to find the noise, the dust and the drilling still with her. Shortage of materials had forced postponement of construction during her absence. "But it's nice to be back, anyhow," she declared. Mrs. Bowers visited her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Hatcher, in Roanoke, Va., during her northern stay. Other highlights of the trip were a brief vacation at "The Homestead" at Hot Springs, and reunions with her niece, Mrs. John Grier of Gastonia, N. C., and her nephew, Carl Felton, in Columbia, S. C., during the journey home.

THE BRIDE'S COOK BOOK Mrs. George N. Hazelhurst Contributes 'Gumdrop Tree' As Xmas Ornament Idea
BY GRACE STONE HALL Though our guest bride of today, Mrs. George N. Hazelhurst, formerly Edith Batcheller, will not be here for Christmas holidays this year, she will be remembered by Coral Gables friends for the unique decoration she arranged last year in the tropical home of her parents, the George E. Batchellers of Sunset drive. What Mrs. Hazelhurst contributed to other holiday adornment of the house was a colorful gumdrop tree. This she made by stripping leaves from carissa branches and putting vari-colored gumdrops on ends of the prickly spines jutting out from the branches. Dr. Hazelhurst being an interne on staff of Roosevelt Hospital, New York City, the young couple will celebrate the Christmas holidays in their apartment at 100 Haven Avenue there and, perhaps, the bride's ingenuity may evolve a New York edition of the tropical decoration. While the young couple was visiting the Batchellers last summer, favorite foods of the bride were served and often she helped make them. In her New York apartment, she is equipped to manage at least some of her cooking problems, besides, fortunately, having the experience of a professional nursing course taken in New York before her marriage here last December. Topping the list of her favorite foods is spoon bread which in a way is really good old cornmeal pudding. She was taught how to make it by Mrs. Sophie Schwieger, who came here from New York with the Batchellers and is their value cooking authority. From the book! of the family favorite foods, this recipe is quoted: Spoon Bread Heat two cups sweet milk and stir in one cup cornmeal being careful not to have milk too hot. Add two tablespoons butter or margarine, scant teaspoon salt and boil until batter thickens over low heat. When cool add stiffly beaten yolks of four eggs and stiffly beaten whites, separately. Put batter in a pyrex baking dish and bake 30 or 35 minutes at 375 degrees. Another favorite of Mrs. Hazelhurst and made to perfection in the Batcheller home is old-fashioned vegetable soup. This the bride's mother and Mrs. Schwieger know is often served by the bride in her northern home. As a family favorite, Mrs. Batcheller recalls it dates back for eight or nine generations of the family living in Forest Hills, N. Y. Prepared according to this long-tested recipe, the soup is made of a veal or beef bone with marrow in it and boiled slowly for three hours. Extra fat is then skimmed off. To this stock carrots, onions, barley or rice and okra are added. When these ingredients have cooked thoroughly, peas and parsley may be added. This is described as making a complete meal with nothing more than the addition of crackers and a dessert. Mrs. Hazelhurst's dietetical training with her nursing course gives her a diploma in food preparation but an extra accolade for cake-making ability is accorded to her by Mrs. Schwieger. "She realy made wonderful strawberry and chocolate cake," praises this authority. "When she was here with her husband last summer."
