ART IN REVIEW

NEW YORK (UP)-The paintings of Salvador Dali, exhibited at Bignou, mark a new chapter in the artistic production of this unpredictable vanguard whose work has provoked such violent controversies for the past 25 years. The subject of his new pictures is the atomic and intra-atomic world. Dali's canvasses include "Leda Atomica," "Portrait of Pablo Picasso in the 20th Century," "Deus Gigant Demi-Tasse With Incomprehensible Appendage Five Meters Long" and another version this one with a "Disintegrated Swan." Dali's atomic age phase differs from his psycho-analytic period not only in its subject matter but also in its mood. While his previous paintings were nightmarish and demoniac, his present pictures are euphoric and celestial, but not less controversial. Marion Greenwood, the painter, and Gabriel Faur, her writer-husband, settled in Southern China about a year ago. Both saw in the present historical struggle there tremendous material for brush and pen. The result of her China work -a series of extraordinary paintings, drawings and gouaches-are now shown at the Associated American Artists. The Grand Central Art Galleries have opened a new modern art department. There will be shown the works of those whom they consider the leaders of the rising new movement in American art." The core of the new group was formed last year when the gallery invited New York critics to choose two or three young artists of outstanding promise. Several of the painters thus recommended were invited to become members of the galleries. The new department will now extend this talent scouting all over America. Museum curators and art critics will be asked to recommend new candidates for membership. All recommendations will be passed upon by the gallery's jury of modern artists chosen from the present group.

Atom Bomb Struck German Scientists Dumb, Writer Says

CHICAGO (UP)-German scientists were working on the Nazi hattan project until they heard a dinner-time broadcast on Aug. 6, 1945, giving the first news of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima. So says Dr. Samuel A. Goudsmit, Northwestern University professor of physics. Goudsmit, in a book entitled "Alsos," which tells about his work with an intelligence unit sent to investigate German scientific activity after the invasion of Europe, said the scientists were taken completely by surprise. "The initial reaction of the German physicists . . was one of utter incredulity," he said. "'Impossible,' they said. 'It can't be an atomic bomb.' one of their number said. 'It's probably propaganda, just as it was in Germany.' "That being settled, the German scientists were able to finish their dinner in peace and even partially digest it. The impact on the scientists was shattering. . . At one stroke, all their self-confidence was gone, and the belief in their own scientific superiority gave way to an intense feeling of despair and futility." Scientists React Shortly thereafter several young German physicists hit upon a "brilliant rationalization" of their failure, Goudsmit, recounted. "This, then," he said, "was to be the new theme song of German science: Germany worked on the uranium problem for peaceful uses only; the allies, for purposes of destruction." Goudsmit warned that such talk is being used to spread again the legend of German "scientific superiority." They want the world to think, he said, that only the Germans were attempting to utilize toxic energy for the good of mankind. The name of the book came from the title of the intelligence mission, of which he was scientific head. "Alsos," the Greek name for Groves, was used because the mission was under control of Maj. Gen. Leslie R. Groves.

Story of Margie's Wedding Dress

CLEVELAND (UP) - Margie Dowell was all set to be married. She had the man, the veil and the dress. But the man, Melvin (Red) Eastin, also had a car, which was unpaid for. Margie made some unkind remarks about the sleek new auto and Red, in a fit of anger, was heard to say that his car meant more to him than anything. Amid a burst of tears, Margie cried, "I hope you smash your car to smithereens." Two weeks later Red did just that. It wasn't long before Red's best friend, Joe, and Margie became engaged. Margie still wasn't happy. Joe produced an engagement ring. "It isn't as pretty as Red's," Margie engaged. As fate would have it, one night Margie and Red met again. Some six weeks later, than originally scheduled, Red and Margie were married. Margie wore a blue suit, instead of the bridal gown she had gone to such trouble to buy. "The dress had brought me enough bad luck," she said. It wasn't long afterward that this classified ad appeared in public print: "Bridal veil and dress, 9, never unpacked, reasonable." The North American population more than doubled in the 60 years between 1880 and 1940, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica.
