SCORE CARD By DON CUDDY

Billie Regan, who is handling the duties of the Coral Gables Athletic Commission until that board can step in, as temporary director, has come up with an angle which has not been over-looked by other commissions outside of this area and should live up to that slogan: "Clean Sports or None at All" at the Coliseum. Put Fight Judges on Payroll From time immemorial, fight judges have been volunteer workers, so to speak-swapping their background and reputation for a few ringside seats and the prestige that goes with officiating. Regan's move is to hire regular referees to act as judges for all fights. Being paid employees of the commission, they can not take the "go to hell" attitude which volunteer judges are some times guilty of. Red McLlaughlin and Sy Gottfreid are two of the top-notchers Billie has in mind to alternate between third-man roles and judges. The third member will be a Coral Gables resident, if Regan can find one qualified for the job. The Ruling Spoils A.A.U. Fights The rather silly scholastic rule that reads any high school lad who fights in the A.A.U. right out of all other school sports except boxing, just about ruined the chance of any local lads entering in the South Florida tournament at the Coliseum last night. Billy Parker, flyweight champion from the Gables, had to forfeit his title because he felt, with good cause, that it wasn't worth missing the fun of all other varsity sports to participate. CYO Basketball Game Slated The Catholic Youth Center Organization of St. Theresa's church will oppose St. Mary's CYO of Miami in a basketball game Friday night at 8:15 p. m. in the Musketeer gymnasium. Admission is 35 cents and there's a big dance afterwards. Mullet Get a Breather 'Till January 20th Florida's first closed season on mullet fishing went into effect yesterday and extends until January 20th. Violations of the new law carry penalties up to $300 in fines or six months in the clink, the State Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission advises. WBAY Hustlers on Sports Broadcasts Radio Station WBAY, which cornered the local football broadcasting field this fall, has programmed all of the major sports events of the winter of interest to Gableites. They start with the South Florida A.A.U. semi-finals at the Coliseum tonight, and pick up the basketball picture with the Hurricanes vs. Tampa games Friday and Saturday. Pro and University boxing will also be aired, Station Manager Bob Standart informs, and several of the Orange Bowl's polo programs. Heavy Balloting For Outstanding Player Incidentally, their contest to select the outstanding prep and Hurricane football player for 1947 gained so much momentum just before the deadline yesterday that it will be impossible to count the ballots much before the luncheon honoring the selections comes off at the Antilla Hotel Saturday noon. A couple of rabid rooters of the feminine gender have been twisting my arm to get their heros the honor . . . but I have nothing to do with it. Anyway, it looks like a toss-up between Eithie "Inky" Mazejka (because he's got all the Bell Telephone operators balloting for him) and Captain George Carifee.

City tennis pro Leo Fullwood was named with Ed Stillman, tennis writer, and Arnaud Pyfrom, of Miami Beach's Flamingo Courts, to the seeding committee for the National Professional Clay Courts Championship tourney slated for Henderson Park, December 20th. Snead Plans To Quit Tourney Golf

By United Press Sammy Snead, one of golfdom's leading professionals, said today he was deserting the tournament trail he followed with success for 10 years to take a job as resident pro at White Suphur Springs, W. Va. Snead, here for the $10,000 Miami Open he has won twice, will compete in the winter circuit matches until April, when he will take over three courses at the Green Briar resort. After that, Snead said, his only tournament activity will be four major meetings-the National Open, PGA, Masters and Tam O'Shanter. Looks to Future The West Virginia shotmaker, who has collected more than $9,000 in prize money this year, considers the permanent position in his home state as "a job for the future." "I'm confident I could make twice as much money staying on the circuit," Snead said, "But it's time to get away from paying railroad fares and hotel bills. It's tough on a family, this business of changing water, food and climate every few days gets you down."

THIRD ORANGE BOWL GAME

Georgia Tech seems to be getting the Orange Bowl habit. The 1948 New Year's classic with Kansas will mark the third appearance here for the Engineers. No other institution has been represented more than twice.

SPORTS PARADE By OSCAR FRALEY UP Sports Writer

NEW YORK, Dec. 10. (UP)-Swinging a baseball bat in the exclusive lobby of the swank Waldorf-Astoria just isn't done, old boy, but if anybody committed such a faux pas today he'd probably knock out a half million dollars worth of baseball brains and ruin a couple of ball clubs. Because before the recipient of the scratch single, or double as the case might be, had recovered his senses he'd be traded right out from around his aromatic cigar butt. The major league owners are busy upstairs. But down on the main floor and in the foyer a mess of small talk and cigar smoke is disguising swaps and attempted swindles as managers plot a la-David Harum for pennants of the future. "They're a shrewd bunch, the managers, and they know what they want. Most of 'em want it for nothing, too, if you ask President Bill Veeck of the Cleveland Indians. "Sure, they'll talk trade," said Veeck. "Now, for instance, all they want from me is Bob Feller and a bundle of cash for their bat boy." "Jolly Cholly" Grimm, manager of the lowly Chieago Cubs, was painfully past, bothered by sciatica. "Anybody would limp," somebody pipes up smilingly, "carrying those Cubs around." But most of them have their troubles. Take Mel Ott, manager of the New York Giants. Master Mel considered his team a while and then sighed: "If they'll catch fly balls in the outfield it will be as good as getting a 15-game winner." Eddie Dyer of the St. Louis Cardinals joined the chorus by asserting his team "couldn't possibly" get off to as bad a start next season as it did in 1947 by losing 11 of its first 13. And Johnny Neun, Cincinnati pilot, pondered moving third baseman Grady Hatton to the outfield, putting Eddie Miller at third and rookie Virgill Stallout at short-stop. The fly in the ointment is whether Hatton can play the outfield. The managers are frankly envious of the way the Boston Red Sox are shelling out to strengthen the club for Joe McCarthy. "If Boston gets two more players we'll have to start the season July 15 to get ready for the World Series," laughed Al Schact. One of the stouter Dodger writers had his problems, too, with the club scheduled to train in the Dominican Republic. "They'll fly in our food," he groaned, "so if there's bad weather we don't eat." There was much discussion of the Pacific Coast League's attempt to obtain major league status. What with the St. Louis (Please turn to Page Seven)

ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL P.C.L. Turns Down Bid for Four Clubs in Majors By JACK CUDDY United Press Sports Writer

NEW YORK, Dec. 10. (UP)-The Major League meetings were reported today to be "leaving the doors open" for a total of four Pacific Coast League clubs to enter the National and American circuits. But that wasn't what the far-westerners wanted. Officials of the Pacific organization announced heatedly that they would insist on having 43-year-old circuit and all four clubs join the Majors. Instead, they were fighting to have the entire Coast League granted major status. If they couldn't get Major League status, the West Coast officials would be satisfied with a five-year probationary period in which the Pacific circuit would be free of the Major League draft, (Please turn to Page Seven)

Dry Lake After Second Straight Biscayne Feature

Dry Lake, star of the L. M. Kirkpatrick kennels, will have an opportunity of making it two straight feature race victories tonight when he steps out in the top ninth race against the other seven leaders of the meeting to date at the Biscayne Kennel Club. In his last, this son of Never Happy-Ruby Sur which won the National Championship Series last summer, came from far back to win by a long two lengths and annex the American Legion Trophy. He Hath and Beachcomber finished in that order in that race and both will be in tonight's entry as principal challengers. Hollen Dale, Sooner Select, First Edition, Gloria Ann and Mamaloo round out this entry that should provide the extended to a mark of less than 32 seconds. Another popular first-division field has been assigned to the eighth race, also at 5-16 mile. It is a pack headed by Rolling Roy, Consistent, My Barbara, Jovial John and other prominent recent winners and money finishers.
