Ear Wiggling Champ Lights in Gables, Faces Police Music in Cuttlink Theft

(Continued from Page One) may not have been overly happy but was at least never uneventful. Burnett told the detective he'd run a laundry, run out on the laundry when he owned the government tax deductions of its 56 employes and had also been a baseball umpire, a short story writer and a journalist. Burnett, who, when arrested, had shown police credentials showing him to be Milton Chesser of 84 N.W. 86th Terrace, began his lengthy statement to police by saying "my legal name is Sidney Johnston Catts Burnett." He said he was born in Los Angeles and traveled the United States until he settled down in Eustis, Fla. He married a "local girl," took over a laundry, and proudly boasts that he became president of the Lions Club and a member of the Elks as well. But his high post in the Lions didn't help him, Burnett says, when the government asked for the income tax deductions for 56 laundry workers. Burnett left Eustis and the Lions and Elks. He called balls and strikes for the Florida State baseball circuit next, then came to Miami when the ball season was over. An $1,800 piece of embezzlement at the Fleetwood Hotel in Miami Beach put him behind bars for a year, records there show. But Burnett used his free time in prison for "creative writing."

Armory and Field House Planned for 'U' Campus

(Continued from Page One) brought up to its full strength of 185 men and six officers through recruiting was inspected by Col. White and Col. P. G. McNamee, inspecting officer for the adjutant's office in St. Augustine. Capt. Robert C. Marsh of Coral Gables is company commander.

Thieves Steal Whiskey, Gun

A bottle of whiskey and a revolver was the loot of a burglar who broke into the home of Mrs. A. J. Lang of 5810 LeJeune Road between eleven and one last night. Mrs. Lang told police the place had been ransacked, but so far only the alcohol and the firearm had been missed. Entry was gained through a front window. The window was raised and the screen broken. An earlier try by the thief to get in through the screen porch was not successful, an examination showed. Mrs. Lang was unable to tell police either the brand of the whiskey or the calibre or make of the revolver.

Charges Ex-Partner Wielded Hammer

Peter J. Clifford, 82, of Virginia Road was bound over to Criminal Court on $200 bond after his erstwhile partner in the chicken business, James Jamis, had stated before Justice of the Peace O. B. White that Clifford had attacked him with a hammer. The charge on which Clifford was held is aggravated assault. The dispute between the former partners which began the altercation arose over a restraining order sought by Jamis in Circuit Court which would force Clifford to stay away from their chickens. Jamis also lives on Virginia Road.

Bank Bag Stolen From Car's Seat

A First National Bank bag containing $250 in cash and six indorsed checks of an indetermined value was stolen from the front seat of a car owned by Harry E. Gage, one of the owners of the G. and G. Quality Market at 2000 Ponce de Leon Boulevard early today. Gage told Miami police he parked his sedan in front of the curb market at NW 22nd Street and 12th Avenue and left the bank bag on the front seat covered with a cloth. When he returned to his car three minutes later, the bag was gone.

Doctor to Give India Free Eye Service

CHICAGO (UP)-A Chicago doctor is flying half way around the world to perform 1,500 eye operations because, he said, this is the "cataract season." Dr. Sam C. Udell, director of the Roosevelt College health service, is en route to India, where until Feb. 15 natives will flock to a central city from the provinces for treatment. Climatic conditions, diet and heredity are believed to cause Indian natives to have many cataracts, Dr. Udell said. The doctor will receive no pay for his services. Instead, he said, he will pay a "tuition fee" to the missionary group sponsoring the project in return for the experience he will gain.

NO AID FOR LOW FLYING

(Continued from Page One) can't police it unless we see the plane in the air and get the number. I am afraid that we can't have our cake and eat it too." Chairman Charles Crandon said that the board has always fought against low flying planes and that it was his opinion that the low flights over Coral Gables are being made by the large four-motored planes on regular scheduled flights, which can't get elevation until they are over the city. Commissioner Hugh Peters stated that "there is no chance in the world to completely eliminate low flying." "We can't move the airport, so all we can do is sit and take it," Crandon commented.

Theater Performance Cancelled

Performances of the Ballet Theatre, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 7 and 8, under University of Miami sponsorship have been cancelled according to Mrs. Marie Volpe of the University. The ballet's performances locally were arranged to coordinate with a contract to perform in South America in a Pan American conference, and when the conference was postponed, the contract was cancelled. In a letter to Mrs. Volpe the unsuccessful efforts of the company to make a Southern tour were described as follows: "Since talking to you on the telephone yesterday, we have made every effort to book the Ballet Theatre down to Miami and have found it impossible to do so. "Local managers in places like Memphis, Nashville, Birmingham, Atlanta, Montgomery, and Savannah either have no open dates or they have another ballet company booked in the territory at the same time that we need dates."

No Reduction In Costs Seen

(Continued from Page One) the smaller builders out of business. In spite of the rationing, Campbell said that local builders will soon have an adequate supply of types of building materials. He said that a new rock lathe factory in Jacksonville will be able to supply 30,000,000 square feet a month to builders in this area. A new type of ceramic process developed by a New Jersey factory will increase the output of scarce plumbing fixtures from 8 to 26 per man, per day, he reported. Bidding of the pulp and paper industry for lumber normally channeled to builders will result in increased shortages of the material, he stated. Nails will continue to be tight for years to come because the same materials can be used more profitably for other products. While wages will go higher, Campbell said that increased out-put could be expected as the industry weeds out "goldbrickers." Land values, now three times above normal, will not go down for some period to come, he said. Despite difficult conditions, Campbell said that it was the concensus of opinion at the conference that the Miami area will continue to "boom," reaching a population of approximately 600,000 by 1953.
