Pre-School Students Prepare for Visit from St. Nick

Sashayin' Around with SUZY

How do you like our little City all "lit up" for the holidays? Pretty pretty, huh? Don't "Country Cousin" me now, you smug towner. Time was when you through the Gables was the sticks... but haven't times changed? Guess who's the latest addition to our smart city set? None other than our beautiful friend from Surfside, Miami Beach... Mrs. Elizabeth Battle Covington. I hear she has sold her lovely Colonial home over there and is now very much of a Gableite. She has been very active at LaGorce Country Club and often appeared in their fashion shows. Talking about fashion shows, you should have seen the member-models of the Country Club of Coral Gables Fiesta cast knitting like mad during rest periods... Betty (Mrs. Tan'onzo) Bliss holds the Club championship, having finished one sweater and started another during rehearsals. Such energy! I've decided to send out maps instead of cards to my friends who get lost every time they come to our doin's. Wouldn't it be a great idea if the Chamber of Commerce or somebody would post a huge colored map of our City Beautiful... right at the entrance to Miracle Mile, all glassed ir and lit up at night? Names are better than numbers ... and a map would be better than a compass! Did you see lovely Betty (Mrs. Stuart) Patten recently at the Riviera Country Club with a "New Look" hairdo? Betty looks like Hedy La Marr's twin sister. There's been an addition to the Patten family and it looks as though they will have a very busy Christmas. Jo (Mrs. Ed) Preston looked like a dream in the frost white hostess gown in which she received guests with Dr. Preston at their recent holiday reception... Mrs. Montanus, her mother, resembled a Dresden figure in her powder blue velvet embroidered with pearls... Bunty (Mrs. Pat) Cesareno wore a charming striped taffeta hat with her tailored black crepe dress and Gene (Mrs. F. E.) Kitchens looked like a John Powers model in her all-black costume with gold accessories... Frances (Mrs. Herman) Boughton wore a pair of earrings you would have loved: two short delicate gold chains supporting a golden bar upon which her name was engraved. Mr. and Mrs. Boughton came from Miami Beach to attend the Preston party as did the John Haynsworths and the Jack McClellans... turn about is fair play, so when Beachties visit the Gables it's to be expected Gableites will visit the Beach. And when Jack and Martha McClellan gave their Christmas Party the other evening the John Wrights, newcomers from Chicago, Dr. and Mrs. L. W. Dowlan, the Elliott Mackles and the Henry Simmonites were ambassadors from in town. Wish you could have tasted the fruit cake at Evelyn Whaley's party the other night... the recipe has been in the family for generations and is really "out of this world." With recipes like that in the family, it's no wonder Evelyn's dad, Judge C. S. Robertson, has that cheerful disposition! Suzy

Gables Women Fashion New Drapes For Dormitory of Children's Home

By the time this is read the boys' dormitory at the Children's Home Society of Florida will boast new drapes—the handiwork of Mrs. L. C. Olson, chairman of the Society House committe and her aides. Mrs. Olson, who is also a member of the executive board of the Coral Gables Woman's Club, rescued discarded but still sturdy window draperies that formerly decorated the Woman's Clubhouse here. They were laundered, and then committee members dyed the curtains a deep brandy-brown to complement the bare brown floors of the eight-bed boys' dorm. Mrs. Olson was assisted by Mrs. James T. Wilson, Mrs. R. A. Morrison and Mrs. Charles Royce, all members of her house committee. Another project recently achieved by the society workers was complete renovation of the home's dining room and porch. An average of thirty-five children occupy the home at all times throughout the year.

Alabama Co-Eds Head for Home

Miss Marilyn Jones and her younger sister, Kathryn, will desert the University of Alabama campus today and start the journey Gablesward for Christmas. Marilyn, a senior and president during the past year of the University Student Government, and Kathryn, a frosh, will arrive from Tuscaloosa tomorrow. They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. J. Harley Jones. Friends who'd like to swap college news with the co-eds can reach them at the Antilla Hotel, headquarters of the Jones family for the holidays.

Christie Wittkow Host at Party

Christie Wittkow will entertain the Young Adult Forum and the Senior Westminster Fellowship groups of the First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables with a Christmas party at the Riviera Gardens in South Miami tomorrow night. Transportation will be provided for everyone leaving the church at 8:15 p.m. Under the chairmanship of Fred Anibal and Tom McCreedy, the men of the groups will be in charge of refreshments. Both of these groups will take part in the annual service of carols and candles to be held in the church Sunday evening at seven o'clock. Following the Vesper service, they will sing carols to shutins. They will conclude the evening with a fellowship hour at the home of Katherine Skogstad, 2716 Granada Boulevard.

Coral Gables Junior Women To Be Santa's Assistants At Kindergarten Festivities

Those up-and-doing Gables junior club women, who produced a public kindergarten for Coral Gables against difficult odds, will assist their number two project Friday when the kindergarten, under the direction of Mrs. Dorothea Brown and Mrs. Warren Glasgow presents its Christmas program and party. The morning festivities will open at ten-thirty with the Kiddie Rhythm Band playing a round of music, Christmas songs and carols and "pieces" spoken by the children will conclude the program. Mrs. W. J. Crane will be at the piano. Santa Claus, whose place will be taken temporarily by O. B. Sutton, will distribute gifts from beneath the Christmas tree which was decorated by the children with ornaments they made themselves. Among the guests will be the twelve junior women who assist the teachers every morning in caring for the fifty young students in the kindergarten. They are Mrs. George Henry, Mrs. John E. Wright, Mrs. Augustus Kerr, Mrs. Ted Treff, Mrs. George Morris, Mrs. Carl Park, Mrs. Vincent Andress, Mrs. Homer Frazier, Jr., Mrs. Robert Mackle, Mrs. Walter Cunningham, Mrs. Joseph Popp and Mrs. L. M. Sweat, Jr. The club members recently added two new sand boxes to kindergarten equipment of sturdy built chairs and tables of blond wood. Main philanthropic project of the Junior Club is a free dental clinic for underprivileged youngsters.

Bagleys Got Up With the Birds To Meet Jeanne

The Ralph Bagleys had to get up mighty early this morning. Reason: their daughter, Jeanne, arrived from Tallahassee on a special six ayem bus. Here to spend Christmas with her parents at 100 N. Red Road, Jeanne is a senior at Florida State University where she is majoring in journalism. She is the managing editor of her school paper, the "Flambeau," and editor of a Spanish paper, "El Eco," at F. S. U. After Christmas, Jeanne's roommate, Gwen Clemonts, from Savannah, Georgia will come down for a week's visit. The two will return to school on the fourth of January.

Prep Student Home

Home from prep-school for the holidays, Richard T. Alger says he'll "relax, fish and swim" until he has to return to Phillip's Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H. on the fifth of January. Richard arrived last night to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mason W. Alger at four hundred and nineteen Avenue Minorca.

Dinner Honors Swedish Visitor

Mrs. Leoufrd Glickstein, 317 Avenue Mendoza, was among the eight guests who were entertained Tuesday evening by Dr. M. B. Smith with a dinner at the San Juan restaurant. The dinner was in honor of Miss Elsa Lange from Goteburg, Sweden who is currently guesting at the Columbus hotel. After travelling from Sweden to South America by boat and from S. A. to Miami by plane, Miss Lange intends to ride a bus from here to New York Sunday because, says she, she wants to see as much as she can of the U. S. before she returns to Sweden.
