HOLIDAY EVE RITES ARE SET FOR TONIGHT
(Continued from Page One) Communion will also be observed tomorrow morning beginning at 10 a. m. There will also be a short sermon by Dr. C. P. Sparling. Dr. Harry I. Marshall will give the address at the candlelight service to be held at the Coral Gables Congregational Church tonight. Christmas carol singing will begin the service at 11 p. m. Following Dr. Marshall's address at 11:15 p. m., a service of lights will be conducted by Rev. Roy G. Pavy. The congregation will follow the choir, consisting of a volunteer group of thirty people, to the lawn in front of the Doctors Hospital. While the choir forms a cross, the congregation will form a circle; both of which will represent Christianity through out the world. Then everyone will sing "Silent Night." To Go Caroling Following an annual custom, the young people of the University Baptist Church will gather at the church tonight at 7:30 o'clock to go caroling in the Gables and environs. Tomorrow at 10 a. m., a special Christmas message will be delivered by the pastor, Rev. Ladislau Biro. There'll be no Christmas Day service at Bryan Memorial Methodist Church in the Grove but chimes will play special Christmas music at 12, 2, 4 and 6 p. m. tomorrow. An organ recital will be given from 11 until 11:30 p. m. tonight at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in the Grove. Solemn high mass will be celebrated at 11:30 p. m. The Parish class will sing at this special service. Holy communion will be celebrated at 8 a. m. tomorrow, and at 11 a. m., a chorale Eucharist will be presented by the boys' choir. This choir will also sing over station WBAY from 8 until 9 p. m. tonight.

Stores Face Final Xmas Jam; Tree Market is Barren
(Continued from Page One) just went out in the woods and cut myself a long leaf pine tree that was nice and bushy," he told the Riviera-Times. Johnnie's Market, on the Tamiami Trail, sold four times as many trees as ever before. They didn't have a tree left today. Carl's Market on Ponce de Leon Blvd., was also sold out. There just wasn't a Christmas tree in town. Traveling Up Gableites were travel-hungry at Christmas time, too, reported the Greyhound bus station on Avenue Aragon. Mrs. Marjorie Jacobson said ticket sales were tripled. "They're going all over the United States, Canada and Mexico," said Mrs. Jacobson. Many of the travelers were students from the University of Miami or Riddle College, who will spend a day or two days each way riding busses just to be home for Christmas. The weatherman was promising partly cloudy skies and warmer weather for Coral Gables for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. But another prediction, this time from the National Safety Council, carried a warning instead of a promise. A total of 400 persons will be killed in traffic accidents during the four-day Christmas holiday, said the council. As this warning was made, Coral Gables Safety Director William G. Kimbrough asked all motorists here to "slow down and watch their step." Said Kimbrough: Every holiday is a time for especial caution on the highways. The safety head said he expected a heavy flow of traffic on all Gables roads today through Sunday.
Old Man River's Boats Have New Look Now
CHICAGO (UP)—Mark Twain never would recognize the river boats that ply the Mississippi these days. Slow, clumsy river boats have been replaced by twin and triple screw, diesel-powered tugboats which can come alongside a dock with the maneuverability of a jeep. American Waterways Operators, Inc., reports that the new diesels outnumber steam-powered boats four to one. Many are equipped with radar to guide them through fog, storm and smoke, and with ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore radio telephone. Some of the new riverboats even have a sort of "jet propulsion" in the form of a nozzle which feeds a constant flow of unbroken water to the propellers to increase the push-power per horsepower.
Farmer Told to Tame Overflowing Well
GRAND FORKS, N. D. (UP) — Damon Babinski, Manvel, N. D., farmer, was fined $25 here for "failure to control an artesian well." A neighbor complained that Babinski's well had overrun part of his land and two county highways. The court, observing that "water still is a mighty valuable commodity in North Dakota," ordered Babinski to cap the well partially.
Fire and Flood Doesn't Daunt These
ARKANSAW, Wisc. (UP) — Folod and fire have been no match for four grimly determined generations of the Miles family of millers during the past 90 years. Since Henry Miles built his first grist-mill here in 1857, three fires and two floods have halted service to surrounding farmers only briefly. Ernie, Henry's son, was burned out in 1871 and flooded out when the Arkansaw River ran wild in 1878. Fire and flood repeated in 1897 and 1907, with Ernie's son James sharing the damage costs. The last fire—in 1927—razed buildings again. James' son-in-law, Cecil Harmon, hasn't lost the mill yet, but he's "prepared for anything."

St. Pete Calls Off Snow As Sun Chases Clouds
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Dec. 24. (UP) — Local weather forecast: No snow for Christmas. "Operation snowflake" was postponed here today because early morning clouds wafted away and sunny skies boosted the thermometer into the seventies. Bob Leon, pilot and amateur scientist, took off at 9:30 a.m. (EST) with the blessings of the St. Petersburg Independent, sponsor of the stunt, and the city publicity department.

Court Recommends Brotherly Love
CHICAGO (UP)—Judge Michael Tremko broke away from law books to suit punishment to the act. In a case involving two brothers, he decided that mother knows best. One brother had charged the other with assault. The judge sent both of them home with a message to their mother to "bring you up more carefully." The brothers are Joseph Pecak, age 30, and Matthews, 32.
