MacDonald Sets Scoring Mark as Riddle Wins 81-52

The Riviera Times

PAGE SIX WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1947

SCORE CARD By DON CUDDY

Old St. Nick gave the Gables a nice, bright sports picture well in advance of the Dec. 25 deadline in the Biltmore Golf Course, the Coliseum and the up-and-coming Riddle Inter-American College basketball team ... and the triple-feature is one of those comforts that will keep on giving entertainment and recreation for many years to come ... just like one of those wonderful briar pipes that's already broken in and all you have to do is sit back and enjoy yourself. Riddle Route of Tampa Raises Eyebrows Probably the two most gleeful lads in Our Town at this moment are Coach Leo Boles and his protege Markey MacDonald of the Riddle College basketball team. Their whipping Tampa last night rates better than the Hurricane's upset of Cincinnati last season in hardwood exclamation points ... and just to prove 'twas no fluke, they've invited me to sky-ride over to Tampa Saturday when they take on the Spartans again. Peeples' Work Is Never Done There's a lot of work to putting the Coliseum in top shape and landlord W. H. Peeples reports that the place is so darn big he hardly notices the improvements being made because there's still so much in the plans undone staring him in the face. One of the jobs polished off between Hurricane basketball games that will be greatly appreciated by the players Friday night, is the new finish on the court itself. That's the same hardwood that was used in the Orange Bowl last season, you know, and it's been pretty rough and slippery. But now it's bright and shiny with a complete sanding job, the cracks have been sealed, new lines painted and two coats of gym finish on the deck will keep it looking sharp. The p.a. system, after much experimenting, is now acting nicely, and Western Union lines are being installed for coverage of some of the major events. Attendance "Better Than Expectations" Peeples, incidentally says that the attendance at the Coliseum is "better than expectations" for the wrestling, boxing and four basketball attractions presented to date. The Carnera-Lewis inaugural (while it may have been a bum "exhibition") grossed $2,950 and the Giosa-Shapiro fight something like $6,858. As far as basketball goes, Henry Weiner (the University ticket manager) counted 900 and 2,100 for the two Friday night Tampa and Florida games, with Saturday attractions dropping to 800 and 1,900 respectively. With good arithmetic he expects the 2,600 basketball attendance record (for this area, of course) set for the one "Basketball Under the Stars" experiment that came off last year, to be topped by the Pittsburgh game this Friday. Beach, Edison Invited to Play Prelims But the strategy behind packing the Coliseum for basketball goes a little beyond addition and faith ... the attractions are going to be jazzed up by local high schools taking on the Frosh team in the preliminary games, thereby giving us a double dose of local talent at work. The wonder team from Miami Beach High school is slated to meet the yearlings to lead off the Pitt hassle ... and Miami Edison may be the first half of the bill when Pennsylvania comes to town on Jan. 2. Heck, the games will soon look like a California drug store if more attractions are added-what with baton-twirler Bill Allen giving demonstrations of his technique during the intermissions.

Markey Stuns Tampa With 33 Counters

Coach Leo Boles niched his "underdog" Riddle College basketball team on the University of Tampa at Thomas Edison High school gym Tuesday night, the entire 14-man squad found playing "out of their class to their liking, and before the final whistle ended it all Markey MacDonald had set a brand new local collegiate scoring record of 33 points -five better than Hurricane Bob Campbell's 28 marker-and the Spartans didn't save much hide from the 81 to 52 lacing. Tampa, the same team that Dec. 12 rudely wrecked the Hurricane's opening at the Coliseum, lost ground from almost the first tap-off as the local school parleyed a 6-0 lead up to 19-6, gave a little for the visitors to come up to 19-13, and then racked up a 47-24 intermission score. MacDonald merrily threw the book of tap-shots, pivots, sets and fast-break buckets at the bewildered Spartans before Boles called him off for five minutes after he registered 25 to tie the mark shared with Campbell. Then Leo sent the (Please Turn to Page Seven)

TODAY'S SPORTS PARADE Please, Santa, Take Care Of Poor Little Rich Kids

By OSCAR FRALEY UP Sports Writer NEW YORK, Dec. 24, (UP)—Dear Santa: This is just a reminder that when you put on your soot-suit tonight and start handing out packages there are a lot of lads in the sports business who deserve a helping hand. Financially they had a good year but most of them are in the category of poor little rich kids. So if you're open to suggestions, here's how: Bucky Harris, New York Yankee manager: Easy, for all he wants is continued surcease from a man named MacPhail. Jonas Ingram, All America Conference Commissioner: A portable mimeograph machine for issuing challenges. Bert Bell, National Football League Commissioner: Ear-muffs, to keep from hearing them. Branch Rickey, Brooklyn Dodgers: An abridged dictionary containing only one and two syllable words. Ed Dudley, PGA President: A junior G-man set. Joe McCarthy, Boston Red Sox Manager: One of those new streamlined plastic pushbutton sets. Leo Durocher, Brooklyn Dodgers: A muffler (for a needy case, Kris.) Jersey Joe Walcott: Needs a new bicycle or roller skates. Calumet Farm: A porcelain piggy bank would be good, cuz the others are chock full. Primo Carnera, "World Wrestling Champion," Dec. 24 edition: A genuine gold belt to with an imitation title. (Suspenders action?e.) Jack Kramer, heir apparent in pro tennis: Something in a wallet, to protect those nice crisp hundred dollar bills. Fred Corcoran, PGA Promotion Director: Optional here, suggesting either gold plated brass knuckles or a Pearl Harbor Panther. Connie Mack, identification un- (Please Turn to Page Seven)

'Cane '5' Boasts Height Advantage Over Panthers

Coach Hart Morris' basketball Hurricanes will be out to break their .500 standing for the 1947-48 basketball campaign Friday night in the Coral Gables Coliseum against the University of Pittsburgh, and hopes to take advantage of a height edge over the starting Panther quintet. Tallest of the invaders are freshmen centers Morton Lerner and Ted Geremsky, who stand six feet two and six feet four respectively, while forwards Cland Canterna and William Cjeply fall one and two notches under the two-yard marker. Guards Sam David and Edward Latagiata go an even six feet. Captain Tony Yovicsin and newcomer Bob Carroll, who has given brilliant support after breaking into the starting line-up, will both use their six foot three endowment to best advantage beneath the boards. This pair controlled the rebound situation most of the time in the Florida series and the Gators were a taller team than this week's opponent. Shortest regular in the Hurricane "first six" is Abe Friedman, scrappy New York letterman and high scorer, at five feet 11 inches. Forward Whitey Campbell and alternate guards Don Cobb and Tony Ferrera both range an inch taller. The touring Panthers, who by pre-season charts rated seven points better than the Hurricanes, have yet to play a home game and have not found victory in six starts on the road against modest opposition despite the fact that all but one of the starters has had at least two years of collegiate experience against the (Please Turn to Page Seven)

Moelling Kennel Registers 26 At W. Flagler

Registration of the E. W. Moelling kennel, one of the largest in the country, was announced by track officials at West Flagler Kennel Club this morning. Moelling registered 26 dogs to race at Flagler during the coming season, which opens January 5 and runs through April 12. The kennel last year was one of the leading money-winning owners at the track. He is now racing his dogs at Biscayne Kennel Club and when the north side oval climaxes the first half of its meeting, Moelling will move his greyhounds to Flagler. Ace in the Moelling kennel is Jonora, brilliant 1947 West Flagler derby champion. Jonora won two major stakes at Flagler last year, annexing the Futurity Stake for two-year-olds besides capturing the historic Flagler Derby. The two races were worth $7,800. Rocket Gal is another star which will race during the Flagler meeting. Last year, Rocket Gal raced in the Flagler "Hot Box" and is one of the few greyhounds ever to finish ahead of Flashy Sir, the mighty Ohlinger & Blair star. Other Moelling dogs registered at Flagler this morning were Joyce Lee, Pakalndar, Flying Gold, Mike McCoy, Grandstander, Mild Weather, Biff Bang, Atomic Energy, Monstro, Rusco, Melana, Wineen, Wintertime, Wintersong, Vinacions, Johnny Mint, Amber Gem, Mystic Maid, Pamure, Daisy Go, Hurry Up, Royal Ante, Ante Around and White Chapel.

Local Shrine Game Looms As Duel Between Stars

Billed as a charity football game between the unbeaten McKeesport and once defeated Miami High school elevens, the Christmas night clash for the Mahi Shrine Temple's Crippled Children's Hospital fund, is now looming as a personal duel between two outstanding stars - John Koesy for Miami high and Elmer Hackett for McKeesport. Koesy, Miami's principal scorer, directs the field play, runs, punts, caries the ball and plays the safety position. Hackett does the same duty for the Tigers except that he does not punt. Both have been regulars for three seasons and Koesy was just chosen All Southern half back while Hackett has been selected as All Pennsylvania quarterback. An added fillip of interest in the charity angle for this game lies in the fact that Hackett was a cripple when he was a baby and one leg was in a cast almost all of the time until he was four. At one time, it was feared he would never walk. However, perseverance by his family and his own determination conquered the ailment and "Crash" has become an outstanding football player and an inspiration to other crippled children. Both teams will go through light workouts today and will call it quits until game time Thursday. Though the kickoff is slated for 8:15 a.m. Robin Mulloy, Mahi Shrine Temple potentate, urges fans to come early as the first of the two game shows will get under way at 7:50 p.m.

Name Aussie Champion

Shannon, Australia's best horse since Phar Lap, has been named for Hialeah's McLennan and Widener this winter. The Aussie champion was recently approved for racing by the Jockey Club after a controversy over a pedigree flaw. Shannon has won 14 of his 25 starts, and recently ran a mile in 1:34 4/5 under 129 lbs.
