Miss Margaret Mae Matthews Weds Berney Arthur Burgess In Bright Christmas Setting

-Photo by Le Man Mrs. Berney Arthur Burgess In a Christmas setting and impressive church rites, Miss Margaret Mae Matthews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman L. Matthews became the bride of Berney Arthur Burgess at eight o'clock last night. Red carnations and white gladioli, tinsel filled Christmas trees and greens decorated the altar and chancel for the ceremony performed by the Rev. Dr. Nevin Schaaf in the First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore white slipper satin fashioned with a lace yoke, fitted bodice, full gathered skirt and long train. Sleeves were tight fitting and pointed at the wrist. Her finger-tip-length veil was held in place by a seed pearl and orange blossom tiara. Mrs. Harold Godwin was matron of honor for her sister. Bridesmatrons included Mrs. Jack Gryder, Mrs. Harold Reynolds and Mrs. Geraldine Hayes while Miss Elizabeth Ricketts was bridesmaid. Their gowns of white moire taffeta were fashioned alike with full sweep skirts, fitted bodies, and cap sleeves. Tight fitting aprons of the moire encircled the waists. They wore two-strand pearl necklaces, the gifts of the bride, and head dresses of Christmas red feathers. The attendants carried bouquets of red carnations and cedars tied with silver ribbons. The matron of honor's gown of red moire was made like the bridesmaids. White feathers in her hair and a two-strand pearl necklace and silver lame mitts completed her costume. Her bouquet was of white carnations tied with silver ribbon. Harold Godwin was best man and ushers included Mark Albury, Phillip Carruthers, Robert Jackson and Jack Gryder. Standards of white gladioli and red carnations decorated the home of Mr. and Mrs. Matthews at 6905 Talavera Street for the reception which followed. SKOL To You, Mr. Jensen

When the Society Department wanted to know how to say "Merry Christmas" in Danish, the natural thing to do was phone Christian Jensen. "Do you want to say, it to children or adults?" queried Mr. Jensen. Asked what difference that made, the real estate man sniffed audibly. "The words are 'Gledelig Jul'," he explained. "But the way Danes like to say it is 'Skol!'"

Silent Night, Holy Night --- All Is Calm, All Is Bright

-Riviera-Times photo by Blazor It's not all holding song books and wearing white robes that makes the "Madrigals" popular as a group of singers. It's mostly hard work, rehearsals once a week, a real talent and a love for the work that puts them in demand. Given their unusual name by Henry Gregor, their director for three years, the Madrigal Singers are a federated group under the wing of the Coral Gables Music Club. They are on call for club and civic group meetings. During the war they sang frequently at hospitals and USO centers. The chorus was founded in 1940 by Arturo diFilippi, director of the Miami Opera Guild, and has been raising its voice in song ever since. The picture shown above was taken as the Madrigal Singers pre- sented a program of Christmas carols and hymns at a joint Yuletide program of the Coral Gables Woman's, Garden and Music Clubs. Pictured in the front row are director Adelaido Gillette, accompanist Eleanor Clark Linton and songsters Marion McCready, Neville Vaughn, Anne Grinham, Flo Stroberg, Ruth Higgins, Virginia Logan and Rose Hoffman. Standing just behind them are Martha Penn McNutt, Catherine Chafer, Lucy Jordan, Marie Pawley, Mona Finn, Zither O'Steen, Charlotte Holdcraft and Ruby Neill.
