Free Postcards Boosting Park Available Here

A postcard mail-away plan, which makes it possible for everyone to participate in boosting Florida's newest attraction, Everglades National Park, was announced today by W. G. Fuller, Coral Gables manager for Florida Power and Light Company. The mail-away cards have been delivered to the company's offices throughout the state and the public is invited to mail them to some one in the North. Manager Fuller states that his office here has already received the attractive postcards for free distribution to all who wish them for mailing. To make mailing easier, Fuller has arranged a writing desk, pen, ink and cards in his office lobby at 126 Avenue Giralda. Everglades National Park received nation-wide attention when President Truman recently dedicated it. Mailing of the postcards now, Fuller points out, is timely and follows the interest created by the President's visit there. Distinctively printed in a variety of colors, the postcards show a map of lower Florida with the park area outlined, park scenes and pictures of its animal life. Mailing the postcards will attract tourists and bring extra dollars into business houses here and elsewhere, the park commission has pointed out. Tourists will enter Florida at practically all points along its northern border and twice traverse the length of the state, going to and returning from the park. During this travel, they will patronize many of Florida's business places. But, meanwhile, Fuller says, "Don't forget to write your Everglades Park postcards-they're free!"

Geologist Says Arctic May Yield Oil

LARAMIE, Wyo. (UP) - A forecast that oil may be discovered in the Arctic region has been made by a geologist at the University of Wyoming here. The geologist is Ray Thompson, who spent the summer doing oil exploration in the frozen north, and who has just completed a report to the navy on his work in the western part of the naval oil reserve No. 4. His belief is backed by the fact that appropriations have been made to finance oil exploration in Alaska until 1950.

Dodge Slates New Truck Showing Here

FREE FOR THE "ASKING"-are these colored postcards showing scenes from Florida's newest attraction, Everglades National Park. The Coral Gables office of Florida Power and Light Company is giving the postcards to persons wishing to mail them to some one in the North. This "mail-away" campaign makes it possible for everyone to participate in boosting the park which will attract thousands of additional tourists to the state. This is one of the new models of Dodge trucks which will be shown for the first time in Coral Gables on January 7 by Tutan Motors. A completely new line of Dodge "Job-Rated" trucks comprising 248 basic chassis models ranging from 4250 to 23,000 pounds gross vehicle weight and up to 40,000 pounds gross train weight was announced today by L. F. VonNortwick, Director of Truck Sales of the Dodge Division, Chrysler Corporation. Some models of the new trucks will be displayed starting January 7 by Tutan Motors, Inc. in Coral Gables. A combination of massive strength and smoothly flowing lines is the keynote of styling for the new trucks. They were designed to combine appearance with comfort, safety, performance, economy and ease of handling. Front axles have been moved back and engines have been moved forward to place more of the gross vehicle weight on the front axle and provide better weight distribution. The wheelbase for conventional models through the 2-ton has been reduced eight inches, while the 2 1/2- and 3-ton models have been reduced six inches. The new trucks have been engineered so that despite the shorter wheelbases, the cab-to-axle dimensions remain practically unchanged, making it possible to use the same length bodies as before.

Crime and Punishment

MONON, Ind. (UP)-The theft was small, but the fine was big. William O. Kelley, 24, was arrested for snatching a woman's purse containing 20 cents. He was fined $510 and sentenced to serve 180 days at the state farm.

30-Year-Old Truck Still Going Strong

MARYSVILLE, Kan. (UP) - Perhaps it should be in a museum, judging by its age. But Howard Vail, Marshall County farmer, continues to use his 30-year-old truck for farm hauling and says it performs as well as it did when he bought it back in 1917 for $1,585. In addition to its farm service, the truck often has been used to haul water for fire-fighting at Herkmer, Kan., which has no fire department. Its original tires still are on the front wheels.
