Gables Girls Become Brides In Church Rites Here
MISS DOROTHY JANICE RICHEY IS BRIDE IN PICTURE CEREMONY AT PLYMOUTH CHURCH
The medieval atmosphere of the old stone Plymouth Church in Coconut Grove made a perfect setting for the medieval type wedding gown chosen by Miss Dorothy Janice Richey and the gowns of her attendants at her Saturday marriage to Joseph Garret Heard III. A rose theme, in deference to the bridegroom's fraternity, Sigma Chi, was used throughout in decorations. White roses, ivy and palms decorated the chancel of the church and roses and candles tied with white satin ribbon marked the pews. The Rev. David Davis read the service. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Richey of 330 Avenue Menores wore ivory satin as she was given in marriage by her father. The skirt was made with panniers, the tiny waist accented by the broad shoulder cape. Long sleeves pointed at the wrist, and a graceful short train were details. Her long veil fell from a Queen Anne hat with shorter veil at the sides. The bridal bouquet was white roses and stephanotis. Miss Ann Douglas Richey was maid-of-honor for her sister and Miss Beverly Heard, sister of the groom, was bridesmaid. The two attendants, tall and blonde like the bride, wore gowns of faille fashioned alike. Long pointed-at-the waist bodice were details of the fitted basques of the gowns whose full skirts swept the floor. Miss Richey was in ivy green and Miss Heard in water lily green. Matching headbands with a rose at either side of the head completed their costumes. They carried oversize bouquets of American Beauty roses, cascading in streamers down the front of their gowns. Lowell Veech was best man for Mr. Heard and ushers included Merle Perry, Paul Ronelle, Don Lindblom, Gene Ely, William Joyce and Edward Newbold. The bride's mother wore an American Beauty crepe formal with a matching feather toque and pale pink roses corsage. The bridegroom's mother was attired in sunset crepe formal with brown accessories and brown feather hat. A Talisman rose corsage completed her ensemble. Gown in rainbow colors decorated the home for the reception following. Miss Ann Oldacre, a cousin, and Mrs. Henrietta Obean, an aunt of Mrs. Richey's, assisted. Miss Martha Martin kept the bride's book. For a honeymoon trip south by plane the bride changed to a Burlington suit with black accessories, and white rose corsage. Upon their return the couple will reside in an apartment on Poinciana Avenue, Coconut Grove. Graduation from college and marriage came to the pretty bride within one week. She was graduated on December 20th from Florida State University, where she won many scholastic honors. She was a member of Mortar Board and was marshal of her graduating class. Mr. Heard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Garret Heard, Jr., of Coconut Grove, is a graduate of the University of Miami where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He is completing his law courses at his alma mater. Mrs. Joseph Garret Heard III -Photo by Le Man
University Bachelors Consume 170 Pounds of Xmas Turkey
Two hundred and fifty bachelor students of the University of Miami got well "fowled up" despite the fact they couldn't go home for Christmas dinner. "I can hardly believe the statistics myself," admitted Mrs. Pauline Daniel, president of the Damon Runyan Post, American Legion Auxiliary, which joined with the student Wives Club to feed the lonely bachelors. "They ate 170 pounds of turkey, 160 pounds of potatoes, and 90 loaves of bread!" she revealed today after taking inventory. All food was donated by Coral Gables, Miami Springs and Miami grocery and meat concerns. "But that's only half of it- the student wives baked 40 pies and cakes; four huge stalks of bananas hung from the dining hall rafters; and ten bushels of fruit were on hand for our dinner guests," she reported. The dinner, cooked and served by the seventy auxiliary members and student wives was held at College Hall of the Student-Veterans Village at 20th Street and Le Jeune Road. "We had expected perhaps a hundred," Mrs. Daniel said. "There wasn't so much as a gizzard left!" The day got off to a Yuletide start when a generous potion of eggnog, left over from a party, was sent over to the students. Guests and hosts sang Christmas carols around a 14-foot tree set up by Sigma Kappa fraternity while waiting for the giblet gravy to be made. "After dinner guests assigned themselves to K.P. and everyone pitched in to help wash the dishes and clean up," said the auxiliary president. "It was a howling success!"

CUPID FINDS VULNERABLE HEARTS HERE
Cupid came to Coral Gables right along with Santa this Christmas season - and holiday betrothals indicated young Dan found almost as many vulnerable hearts as St. Nick did chimneys. Parents of pretty Nancy Marie Strunk revealed that ex-Marine Ken McCormick had scored a direct hit on their daughter's heart when they announced the engagement of the popular couple at a luncheon at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Nancy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Strunk of 1877 S.W. 11th Street, Miami, was graduated from St. Theresa's School and attended the International School of Business in Coral Gables. Her fiance, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam H. McCormick of 3890 Alhambra Circle, was graduated from Ponce de Leon High School. He attended Duke University and obtained his college degree this Fall from the University of Miami. A veteran of combat with the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater, he is now associated with teh Pro-tect-U Jalousie Company. The couple has not set a date for their marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey G. Maguire of 3270 Riviera Drive chose a party Saturday night as setting for announcement of the engagement of their daughter, Miss Gloria McGuire, to William Burrell Drake, Jr., of La Grange, Ill. Miss Maguire was graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York City following completion of her college courses at Stephens College, Columbia, Mo. Her fiance is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Drake of La Grange, and a graduate of the University of Illinois where he joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Miss Jeanne Marie Parry's betrothal to Donald David Burr of New York City, was revealed at a small party at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. William Parry, 400 Alhambra Circle. Jeanne was graduated from Harcum Junior College at Bryn Mawr, Pa., and attended the University of North Carolina. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, the Spinsters Club and the Junior League of Miami. Mr. Burr, son of Mrs. Belle Burr of New York, attended Columbia University and during the war served as ensign in the Naval Air Corps. No wedding date has been set.
FOOTBALL IS KING AGAIN
"Three cheers for dear old Kansas" will be given by Louis Feuerbacher and A. A. Idol during the Orange Bowl football classic New Year's. They're coming down here from Robinson, Kansas, just to see the game. While here, they will visit Mr. Feuerbacher's cousin, Mrs. Roy Geiger of 702 S. Red Road. Football fans from way back, Coach and Mrs. Harold Reade and son, Carl, journeyed all the way from Kansas City, Kansas, to watch the Lawrence, Kansas, team oppose Georgin Tech in the Orange Bowl New Year's day. They arrived yesterday to stay with Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Zimmerman, 498 Sunset Road, until January 2nd. Mr. Reade is coach of the Shawnee Mission High School team in Kansas City. Mary Todd Hood arrived Saturday from Covington, Kentucky, to spend a few days with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Todd, at 1260 Avenue Marianas. While here, she will attend the New Year's football classic in the Orange Bowl. Arriving yesterday from Lancaster, Penn., was Miss Alice Schutte, houseguest of Miss Betty Louise Merriam. The girls are roommates at Harcum Junior College in Bryn Mawr, Penn. When they attend the New Year's day football game in the Orange Bowl with Betty's parents, the W. H. Merriams, there'll be no doubt as to who they will cheer for. Mr. Merriam is a graduate of Georgia Tech. The Merriams reside at 1022 Avenue Malaga.
University Club Groups Chart Plans for '48
Weaving will be on the New Year's agenda for the Home Arts Department of the University Woman's Club-but the ladies have neither rugs nor blankets in mind. Colorful hand-woven bags to match spring costumes will be the goal when department members gather at the home of Mrs. J. Riley Staats, 1341 N. W. 7th Street on Wednesday, January 7th. Over cups of coffee they'll follow directions of their hostess, a former teacher of arts and crafts, in patterning individual purses from strands of vari-colored yarn. Mrs. H. Franklin Williams is acting chairman of the group that will meet to plan a program morning for the first work session of the New Year. Many new activities of other club departments will be underway with the beginning of 1948. The Tongue and Needle group will lead off on January 6th under the direction of Mrs. J. Maynard Keech, who has been re-elected chairman. Every effort will be turned toward a display of needlework planned for the spring.
Ohioans Are Guests
Even if the John Weihls don't get to go swimming on South planned during their first visit to Miami, they still think it was well worth traveling all the way from Marietta, Ohio to spend their holidays here. With the Weihls are their three children, John Jr., Mary and David. Before they return to their Ohio home, they'll make a trip to Key West. They are visiting at the Joseph Sanders home at 6920 Hazel Street in High Pines.

Santa Followed Gwen From Virginia
Santa Claus had to come all the way to Florida to visit Gwen-dolyn Johnson. Here from Alexandria, Virginia, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John R. Johnson, Gwendolyn is visiting her sister, Mrs. Edwin Perry at 1326 Milan, until after New Year's. But being away from home Christmas didn't keep Santa away. She received, among other things, a big bicycle, a doll, and plenty of clothes to keep that doll from getting the sniffles in this Florida "dew."
DAVID LOVES MOVIES OF GUESS WHOM?
Little David Madsen, one and a half-year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. Blair Madsen, is not interested in the many expensive toys which Santa Claus brought to him. But when his parents bring out the movie projector which they got for Christmas and show pictures of their only son, David is greatly alert. And psychologists say women are vain!
Jerry Fred Laucks to Make Home in Columbus, Ohio
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fred Lauck were honeymooning at Miami Beach today following their marriage Saturday morning in a ceremony solemnized at the Church of the Little Flower. The former Miss Betty Jane Morbusch, daughter of Mrs. Anna R. Patterson Morbusch of Coral Gables and Arthur R. Morbusch of Miami, chose floor-length white taffeta for her wedding gown. Her long bridal veil was held by halo-bonnet of white taffeta and caught at the sides with orange blossoms. She carried gardenias. Miss Dorothy Ward, maid of honor, wore floor-length pink taffeta, while Mrs. I. R. Mayers, bridesmatron, and Miss Audrey Sue Atkins, bridesmaid, wore gowns of the same material in blue. Their bouquets were red poinsettias. Mr. Lauck, son of Mrs. Grace Moore of Coral Gables and Dr. Howard Lauck of Columbus, Ohio, was attended by George Bremier as best man. Ushers were Robert Hickey and I. R. Mayers. A reception at the Country Club of Coral Gables followed the ceremony. Following a brief stay at Miami Beach, the couple plan to fly to Columbus, where they will make their new home. Mr. Lauck is a pre-medical student at Ohio State University. His bride is a graduate of Miami High School and received certification as a graduate nurse at the Jackson Memorial School of Nursing. -Photo by Le Man
