Boxing Weathers Storms, Scandals
(Continued from Page 5) most to boxing during 1947. Lesnevich of Cliffside, N. J., won four straight fights during the year, three of them against heavyweights. He retained his light heavyweight crown on Feb. 28 by stopping Blackjack Billy Fox in the 10th round at Madison Square Garden. When Gus next climbed through the ropes, on May 23, he established a new Garden main-event record by knocking out southpaw Melio Bettina, a heavyweight, in 59 seconds of the first round. He later outpointed Tami Mauriello, a heavyweight, and in a return bout blasted Mauriello into retirement by knocking him out in the seventh round. Walcott Nearly Wins Ancient Walcott—father of six children—defeated Joey Maxim twice and Elmer Ray once, to qualify as challenger for Joe Louis' crown. Regarded merely as the best of a poor crop of contenders, Walcott was an 8-1 underdog when he entered the ring against Louis at the Garden on the night of Dec. 5. He electrified the crowd by flooring Louis twice and giving the champion such a battering that most fans and experts thought Jersey Joe had won the decision and the title. The ring officials, however, gave Louis a split decision and—despite unprecedented public protest—the New York Boxing Commission later refused to reverse the decision. The Louis-Walcott bout attracted a gate of $216,477—a new Garden record. During the year, four other gates of more than $100,000 were registered at the Garden, where the gross fight receipts for the year will exceed those of 1946. It was the Chicago Stadium, however, that set an all-time record gate for indoor bouts, the world over. On July 16, the return middleweight title fight between Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano drew $422,009. Graziano, the dead-end guy from New York, wrested the world middleweight crown from Zale on a technical knockout in the sixth round of a bout that was as sensational as their first encounter at New York the previous September.

Bicentennial Features 1733 Lincoln Shrine
READING, Pa. (UP)—National interest is being revived in one of the least known Lincoln shrines of this country as Reading in Berks County prepares to celebrate in 1948 the bicentennial of its founding. Even before Thomas and Richard Penn, sons of William Penn who gave the state the family name, founded Reading in 1748, members of the Great Emancipator had settled near this modern industrial city. The home Mordecai Lincoln, the great-great-grandfather of President Abraham Lincoln, built in Berks County in 1733 still stands. It is on a little traveled gravel road in the village now called Exeter. The home will be featured as part of the centennial. Not far from the Lincoln ancestral homestead of gray stone is the Exeter Friends' Meeting House, established in 1725. Here Lincoln's family worshipped together with the family of Daniel Boone, the pioneer American scout and Indian fighter.
Women Necessary, Boston C. of C. Finds
BOSTON (UP) — The Boston Chamber of Commerce finally has conceded that women are necessary. After the chamber voted to break a barrier of long standing preventing women from sitting on the board, Michael T. Kelleher, president, addressed the members. He said: "I know of no venture calling for complete community co-operation that achieves success without the support and help of women."
