Let's Plan For Junior High Safety

By RON LEVITT AN OBSERVATION IN OUR TOWN: It's wonderful that the tourists can get to Tropical Park faster now that the Palmetto Expressway is nearing completion in the Coral Way-Bird Road area. One would have to agree it took a great deal of foresight to have the Expressway so convenient to the raceway. Wouldn't it have been as wonderful if the county road planners had as much foresight for our children? West Miami Junior High School on Coral Way is one block from the Expressway. Approximately 50 percent of the school population must live west of the Expressway. But there are no crosswalks ... no overpasses... by which the youngsters can get to this school except to walk on the street. In addition to the traffic on Coral Way itself, just before one gets to the school there are the Expressway turnoffs which the youngsters must cross. In addition to the traffic, a canal runs parallel with Coral Way. So, the youngsters can either walk on the dirt along the canal or walk on the highway. One must wonder whether the first child who gets hurt on Coral Way on his way to school because of the lack of a sidewalk or cross-over point will consider that the Expressway planners had foresight enough???? THINGS TO WATCH FOR: The diehards are at it again . . . and it could mean some trouble to Florida. At a recent legislative confiarb held in Boca Raton, several members of the Florida House said they were considering a private school plan to put in use in case integration of public schools is ordered here. They have requested a copy of a similar bill being prepared in the Louisiana Legislature. Proponents of the private school plan know by now it would be near impossible to close the public schools, but they plan on offering a "private school" bill, if the State of Louisiana gets away with it. You can watch for the bill's introduction during the '61 Florida legislature. But, it will get no-where; just cause a lot of unnecessary haggling and bad headlines for the State of Florida. A zoning decision should be reached by early January which is expected will make way for one of South Dade's most magnificent shopping centers. The center will be built on Bird Road to serve the western suburbs. Seventy acres are set aside for the huge project. The name of the shopping plaza will be Concord. Several major national chain stores have already expressed an interest in the location. A new home development will open within the next few weeks in the western snrburbs between Coral Way and the Tamiami Trail. The homes will all have four bedrooms. The builder says the demand for four bed-room homes is greater than ever. A movie chain operator is reported to be interested in building a suburban theater west of Coral Gables. The operator reportedly said the population growth in the area calls for a new theater right in the section. Site of the theater may be in a shopping center.

Strip Of Property Sold On U. S. Highway 1

A 250-foot strip of property on US 1, directly across from Richard's Store in the Cutler Ridge Shopping Center, is the site of a planned professional building. The building will be erected by Glifford W. Crittenden, of Kendall, who purchased the site from Ross Family, Inc., for a price reported in excess of $45,000. Mercer Goldsmith of The Keyes Company's Kendall office and Ralph Ross, of Pullum Realty, cooperated on the sale.

Book On Pitfalls Of Furniture Buying Popular

Nationwide requests for copies of their publication, "Furniture Confidential," have spurred Modernage Furniture into rushing the latest printing of the booklet to completion. An article in the national periodical, Home Furnishings Day, appearing Dec. 30 under the by-line of staff writer Larry Cafiero is credited for the influx of requests for copies, according to Martin E. Feinman, president of Modernage. Written in down - to - earth style in layman's language, "Furniture Confidential" is designed to alert the consumer public to the malpractices of unscrupulous merchants by pointing out the pitfalls that threaten the unwary customer. "We feel that we're doing a real service to the buying public," said Feinman, "in warning them against such things as phoney 'Going Out of Business' sales, so-called 'wholesale' operations and other unethical practice that result in the consumer wasting money on inferior merchandise. No reputable businessman will condone an action that makes 'suckers' out of honest folk." Nearly 100,000 copies of "Furniture Confidential" have been distributed through Modernage showrooms in Miami, Coral Gables, Fort Lauderdale and W Palm Beach. Many have been mailed in response to requests arising from newspaper ads and the company-sponsored television movies on Modernage Theater. The booklet is free, and contains no mention of Modernage other than on the cover.

Four thousand refrigerated carloads of Florida sweet corn—a quarter of a billion pounds—were shipped from the state in a recent year.
