Sunrise Park Plan Gets Warm Reception

A novel plan for development of Douglas Park in Sunrise Harbour received a warm reception from the Coral Gables City Commission last week. Architect Kenneth Treister, of 3660 Battersea, who presented the plan to the Commission last week at an informal meeting, received plaudits from Mayor John M. Montgomery for his efforts in creating the idea for the park. Treister, a student of park design and engineering, offered his services gratis to the Commission. Parks Important Parks are probably the most Important things that the city provides for its residents, Treister told the Commission in presenting his plan. While praising the Coral Gables Youth Center highly, he pointed out that the city lacks adequate neighborhood parks. Young children have difficulty in getting to the Youth Center, he said. "Neighborhood parks are lacking in Coral Gables as they are in other areas," Treister said. The children who would use them have no one to lobby for them, he pointed out. Outlining the fine details of his proposed plan for Douglas Park, Treister said, "It takes more than a sand lot and a few swings to make a park." Estimated cost of building Douglas Park would be between $3000 and $3500, with about $950 of the money going towards a specially constructed wall that would serve to keep children from running out into the streets and designed to help them play. Treister also presented designs for a bench that could be used by either children or adults and also serve as a building tool for imaginative play-sculpture. Commissioners indicated that a start would be made in construction on some phase of the project in the near future.

It's The Style To Be Square, Tailor Declares

It's in style to be a little square. But only around the shoulders. That's the new "British look" in men's fashions, states Mr. Maure. An English custom tailor who notes the trend with a touch of national pride, Mr. Maure came to the U.S.A. three years ago to study our fashions and stayed to open an American establishment at 206 Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables. What is happening, he says, is that form fitted Italian styling is giving way to the British idea of squarer shoulders, and a tendency toward waist suppression. There's even a change in the height of the center vent. It's now 9 or 10 inches high, as in the "Hacking Jacket," an English sports jacket worn when hunting. As a result, the suit that was socially acceptable only a season or two ago, is rapidly becoming as outdated as its double breasted ancestor. Not that Mr. Maure objects. Miami men, acutely aware of current trends, are rushing to have him narrow their lapels, or taper their pants. Trouser cuffs are still optional though, with the younger set preferring them off, and businessmen reluctant to part with the familiar appendage. Pleats? Definitely out, says Mr. Maure. Italian style cuffs on the sleeve are also losing popularity, but the two button jacket is back in vogue. Italian styling is still dominant, Mr. Maure admits, but the British designers have regained a firm foothold on the fashion ladder.

South Miami To Enlarge City Hall

South Miami's police headquarters, already bulging at the seam from added use since it was constructed four years ago, is going to be enlarged. According to City Manager C. B. Petry, bids are due Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 14, for the construction of a 20 by 39 foot addition to the police headquarters which will be used for squadroom and offices. The addition will be built in the rear of the present headquarters or on the north side of the present building. "The police department just does not have enough space," said City Manager Petry, "the reason for the needed addition." The police headquarters is a part of the South Miami City Hall which was finished in 1956. On one side of the police station is the Council chambers. On the other side is the City's fire station. Council will award a contract for the job at its Dec. 13 meeting.
