Gableites Dominate Metro Commission

ROBERT HAVERFIELD Robert M. Haverfield Tuesday was elected chairman of the new 13-man Metro Commission which is dominated by Coral Gables residents. Haverfield, who has served on the Commission, was joined by other Gableites Winston W. Wynne and Dr. Jack Beckwith, who were sworn in Tuesday. The chairmanship and two seats could give the Gables a heavy voice in the newly organized Metro Commission. Strong For Metro Wynne, who served on the Coral Gables City Commission before he resigned last month, is probably one of the strongest pro-Metro voices in the area. Beckwith, a dentist, is making his first appearance in politics after a surprising victory last year. Veteran In Fight Haverfield, a veteran in the fight to keep the county government machinery going despite every obstacle, will have working with him a group of men who were elected under the Metropolitan Home Rule Charter for the first time. Five members of the previous Metro Commission were holdovers from the previous County Commission. Haverfield, an attorney, resides at 526 San Antonio. Wynne, an agent of Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., lives at 6300 Castaneda, and Dr. Beckwith, at 3003 Alhambra Cir.

New Branch Offices For Ace RB Van Lines

In Jacksonville And Norfolk Paul D. Berlin, president of Ace RB Van Lines, Inc., recently announced the opening of two branch offices. Norfolk, Va., will be the site for a New Company Office; here, Mrs. Susan Belle has been named manager. In Jacksonville, Florida, headed by Mr. Cox, an agency has been established to serve Florida's interests. Mr. Berlin is proud of the success his company has achieved in the moving business and declared, ". . . with continuing effort we try to improve our service. Our new offices will enable us to give our customers better service." Established In 1947 Ace RB Van Lines, Inc., with their air-conditioned offices, and fire proof warehouse, 2136 NW 24th Ave., established their main office here 14 years ago and has since assumed a place of leadership in the moving and storage fields. "In 1947 there was just one truck, a 16-foot furniture van used for local moving," said Berlin. "Five years ago we acquired our ICC license permitting us to operate long distance vans. Today, nine modern furniture vans handle all local moving and serve 23 Eastern and Midwestern States. Up To Date Equipment The modern, all aluminum 40 foot trailer makes frequent trips along the Eastern seaboard and to Midwestern points. It is capable of carrying entire contents of a household or "part loads" for various individuals. Thirty-five foot vans, sufficient to carry entire contents of an average household, are used to carry local movings. Safe delivery of furnishings and fragile pieces are dependent upon correct packing. Ace's expert packers use plenty of soft pads and packing know-how to assure greatest safety for shipping by freight, sea, or air. The Line also handles shipments to Puerto Rico, and the Panama Canal Zone. Warehouse Facilities Fireproof storage facilities are also available for families moving to and from Miami. All household furnishings are kept here until the families have decided upon where they are moving. The storage rates are all kept at a minimum. Savings Factor "There is also a savings factor," Berlin declared, "We have reduced tariff rates—this enables us to offer lower customer prices. Take, for example, the charge for a minimum 500 pound delivery to New York City is only $62.50—Chicago $63.00—Cleveland $62.00." New Year's Weekend Was Safe And Sober

If the records of the Coral Gables police are to be believed, there were only two drunks New Year's Eve and Day. At least that's all who were arrested in what must be chalked up as one of the most unheralded celebrations on record.
