UM Symphony To Give Concerts For Children

A musical treat is in store for Dade County youngsters late this month, when the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of world-renowned conductor, Fabien Sevitzky, will present two concerts each at the Dade County Auditorium and Miami Beach Auditorium. On Friday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Dade County Auditorium, and on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the same hours at Miami Beach Auditorium, the orchestra will present a symphony musical menu, geared to the young listeners from Dade County's 138 public elementary schools and to students from private and religious schools. A new set of two concerts each day, with different programming, will be played to the same audiences at the same hours on April 15 at Dade County Auditorium and on April 29 at Miami Beach Auditorium. Again, Sevitzky will be on the podium for these four concerts. Tickets are now available in schools throughout the greater Miami area. Single concert tickets for the children are 50 cents each, or $1 for a pair to the January and April dates. Accompanying adults may purchase tickets at $1 a concert. Youngsters and their parents should inquire about tickets and concert details at their own school or telephone the University of Miami Symphony Office MO 1-4960 or MO 1-2511, extension 2220. The eight concerts are sponsored by the Symphony Club of the University of Miami. Mrs. C. S. Kellogg is general chairman for the Symphony Club, working with a committee, and the club's vice president, Mrs. Paul Bromberg. Dr. Howard Doolin, supervisor of music for the Dade County School Board, is coordinating details with music teachers and principals in the public school system. Faculty and officials in private and religious schools are cooperating.

Youth Symphony Seeks Original Compositions

The All-Miami Youth Symphony is sponsoring a composition contest. The contest, made possible by awards by Judge Kenneth Oka and his father Samuel, is entitled "Youth Composes for Youth." The winner of the first prize for an overture or a tone poem of 4 to 10 minutes duration will receive $100 and $50 worth of records of the winner's choice. There will also be second and third prizes of $50 and $25. All winning compositions will be performed at the May 7 concert of the All-Miami Youth Symphony at Dade County Auditorium. Each winner will receive a recording of his composition and five lessons in composition from the Symphony conductor, Robert Strassburg. The contest is open to all Dade County students, ages 13 to 19. Each contestant must submit his manuscript by midnight, March 1, to Robert Strassburg, conductor, All-Miami Youth Symphony, 202 N.W. 24th St., Miami. Rules and application blanks are available at schools or by calling FR 9-0226.

Thief Steals As She Types

A typing course at Coral Gables High School proved expensive for Sandra Sheehan, of 6690 SW 106th St., Jan. 5. The victim had two rings, valued at $550, stolen while she was practicing typing that afternoon. She told police that she removed the rings, one a three-quarter carat diamond solitaire in a gold mounting and the other an old fashion blue-green zircon in a gold shell shaped mounting, and placed them next to her typewriter. Later she was instructed to move to another typewriter, police said, and left her rings behind. When she returned to the typewriter at the end of the class, both rings were gone.
