South Miami Roundup with Ed Knight

He that will make a good use of any part of his life must allow a large part of it to recreation. — Locke. YES, SUMMER is here. There's no doubt about it. Like all summers, the weather is hot and rainy. The children are out of school. The days are longer and more time is spent out of doors. Summer is supposedly a joyous time of year. IT'S THE time for outdoor barbecues, picnics, boating, bathing, sports, vacations, traveling and renewing of old acquaintances. The winter? It was meant for concentration and hard work. That's why the winter days are short and cold. AND WHY the summer days are long and warm. But yet, with all the facilities we have here for vacationing winter and summer, it's surprising the number of people, men and women, who never have learned to play as well as work. THE NATION'S work force, including Florida's, certainly has more leisure time than ever before to relax and enjoy itself. Pay is at an all-time high for those who have acquired a trade or profession. Modern highways make it easier for vacationers to travel from one point to another. YET, THE average man is so concerned with his daily work, his future work and his status in the community as a result of his work that he has forgotten how to relax and enjoy himself. The truth is that the American male has been so highly geared to work that the recreation factor in life has been put aside. WEBSTER'S DESCRIBES the word "relaxation" as "abatement or remission, as of a penalty, duty . . . diversion or recreation." The last two words in the explanation are the most important ones, I believe. They are the contrast to work, the key to fruitful living and the best way to combat work fatigue. BUT YET, what might be one man's work may be another's pleasure. The attorney who is daily buttoned up in a coat and tie seeks reprieve in a sport shirt and shorts puttering around his yard in the late evening. The mechanic, on the other hand, seeks his relaxation in donning his coat and tie at night for a trip to town. HERE IN THE southwest, work still outweighs recreation in the number of hours consumed. Although there is a less casual atmosphere in the summer, relaxation is a word and not an act. But why should it be? Dade's southwest has practically everything a man should want to make his life a more pleasant one. FOR SWIMMING, there are numerous beaches within easy reach of anyone that possesses a car. To the east there is Matheson Hammock and Crandon Park, both Dade County owned and maintained. If one doesn't go for these, there are other parks both north and south. TO THE SOUTH there is Homestead Bayfront Park, near Homestead Air Base, easily accessible because of the opening of the Palmetto Expressway. To the north within a half hour's drive are Birch State Park and Ft. Lauderdale's beaches. IF YOUR pleasure and relaxation is eating, there are some of the finest restaurants in Dade County in the Southwest. For steaks, seafood, Chinese food, pizza, barbecued ribs and European food, the southwest has the restaurants. BOATING AND fishing might be your diversion. If so, there is no finer. There is an abundance of new and used boats in this area and they can be bought at bargain prices. Once having acquired a boat, there are ramps at numerous spots for slipping the craft into the water. THE FISHING near the southwest is some of the best in the world. Due east of the southwest, in the bay and farther out in the ocean are every description of fish. They're there for the ardent fisherman. To the south, also via the Palmetto Expressway, are the world-famous Florida Keys, where fishing is an attraction and not a sideline. You can reach the keys within an hour from the southwest. PICNICKING, the pleasure party attended by a group which usually brings assorted food, is fast becoming replaced by the backyard barbecue, with its assorted drinks and wide variety of food. But yet, there are plenty of picnic grounds either at southwest parks or at the beach for the deviled egg connoisseur. FOR ME, reading, that forgotten hobby that was temporarily replaced by television, is one of my favorite means of relaxation. To take a book or a part of the Sunday paper out under a tree and lose one's self in the descriptions and adventures of another, is a true care loser. FOR OTHERS, movies, in air conditioned theaters or drive-in parks are another means of diversion. For the southwester, there is an abundance of movie theaters. There are five indoor theaters in Coral Gables and one in South Miami that feature the best offered by Hollywood. NOW, BECAUSE of the Palmetto Expressway, southwest residents have access to nearly every drive-in in Greater Miami. There are two in west Dade, one in South Dade and several in north Dade that previously were seen only in the newspapers. The legitimate theater? It prevails in the southwest with at least three theaters for a contrast in playgoing. RELAX, IT'S later than you think. Relax, with fishing, boating, sports, eating, togetherness or reading. Enjoy South Florida as it was meant to be enjoyed — in the summer, in the sun and near the water. Recreation is not the highest kind of enjoyment, but in its time and place is quite as proper as prayer — S. I. Prime.

Youth Hurt As 'Scooter' Slams Car

One of two boys riding on a motorscooter was treated at Doctor's Hospital recently after their vehicle slammed into the back of a car. William Edward Roberts, 14, of 1541 Palermo Ave., was given emergency first aid at the scene of the accident, 356 Miracle Mile, before being taken to Doctors' to be treated for head injuries. Fifteen-year-old William Guy Ferris, 1030 South Greenway Dr., who was riding with Roberts, was not reportedly injured. According to Officer James R. Stanfield, young Roberts was east bound on Miracle Mile when he struck the rear of a vehicle driven by Albert Salvatore Scianicco, 36, of 1135 S.W. 62nd Ave. No charges were filed.

Non-resident adults will now be required to pay $3 rather than $2. The children's non-resident fee of $1 will remain the same. Approximately 1,000 non-resident users use the library facilities. The Commission also approved a list of fines. The first time they have been formalized by resolution. Overdue books will cost delinquents three cents per day. Lost or damaged books will cost the guilty party the full list price of the book. Lost or damaged membership cards will cost 25 cents to replace.
