Claire's Back--on the 19th Hole

By VANGIE GRANT Correspondent Claire is back in town. Who is Claire? Ask any of the older members of the Century Club of Coral Gables Women's Golf Association. For it was Claire (Mrs. Robert E.) Holsaple who organized the women golfers nine years ago. Until Claire was elected president of the golf association in 1952, the members merely turned out each Friday to play together. This energetic woman took the initiative to draw up by-laws, assemble the first year book (published by the old Riviera Times for $35), petition the club for lockers, and to inaugurate the first costume tournament with the Biltmore women as guests. The latter has been an annual traffic-stopper ever since. In recalling that first costume tournament, Claire chuckled, "On the first tee, we used cushion from the front seat of a truck, Each golfer had to stand on it to drive, and an old piece of rubber hose was used for the tee. We allowed everyone a 'Mulligan.'" Claire also recalls almost being arrested that morning. "I left home early in my garish costume, which consisted of a very short cocktail suit, black mesh hose, an outlandish hat and spiked heels, and I carried a long cigarette holder" At this point, it seems a Coral Gables police car came by and slammed to a sudden halt, "Where are you going?" the officer inquired. Claire casually replied, "Why, to the Granada Golf Course." The officer said, "I'll follow you." Claire was sure everything would be explained by Elmer Gerth in the Pro Shop. But not so. "When we walked in," Claire said, "Elmer kept a straight face and said he didn't know me. Fortunately, about that time other golfers arrived in costume and the officer was finally convinced that everything was legal." When asked where she got the idea for the costume tournament, Claire explained that in Des Moines, Iowa, where she and her husband belonged to the Hyperion Country Club, golfers from five clubs got together and had what they called "Doe-Day." Everyone played in costume and prizes were donated by merchants in return for advertising. Claire insists that she could not have organized the Women's Golf Association without the help of Frances (Mrs. Meyer) Gold. She also said that credit for setting up the books should go to Helen Mrs. T. E.) Norman. There were only 30 members in those days and two years ago the association was forced to limit membership to 100. There is a waiting list and preference is given to former members. The Holsaples left Coral Gables in 1955 to live in Atlanta, where Bob was regional manager of the Tractor and Implement Division of Ford Motor Co. Recently he was appointed manager of the Truck Division in this area. The Holsaples live at 7965 SW 136th St. Claire adds, "Down where the geese go barefoot!" GOLF'S THEIR GAME and their scores showed it. These are winners in the three flights of the recent Women's Golf Association tournament. Left to right in the golf cart are, (flight one) Mrs. Clifford Snyder, 1316 Alhambra Cir; (flight two), Mrs. Robert Marshall, 5880 SW 53rd Ter; and (third flight), Mrs. W. M. West, 5911 Michelangelo St. (Staff photo by Raymond Lang.) CLAIRE HOLSAPLE is back living in this area. While she chats on the phone, a neighbor, Mrs. Marie Dunn, 7945 SW 136th St., visits.
