South Miami Roundup
Continued from Page 1 Gables, Southwest, Palmetto and Christopher columbus high schools play most of their games at Gables Stadium. The games will begin in mid-September and continue to the last of Novemeber. ★ ★ ★ SO YOU think television has taken the place of reading in the Southwest? Don't you believe it. Instead listen to this. South Miami library, a branch of the Miami public library, is less than two years old and already the busiest of the branch libraries. ACCORDING TO South Miami City Manager C. B. Petry, during the last 12 months over 1,200 non-South Miami resident cards have been issued to county residents. These cards cost $4. During June alone there were 171 of these cards issued compared to 231 for all the other branch libraries and the Miami library combined. AS A RESULT, South Miami is renewing its contract with Miami Library, is getting more books and shelves and two additional helpers. "We had no idea the library would catch on this way," Petry said. NOW THIS points up at least one thing. The unincorporated area of southwest Miami is in dire need of a library that doesn't cost its cardholders $4 a card. The branch library costs South Miami $19,500. Why doesn't Metro spend $20,000 a year and get a library in the area of Bird Road and Galloway. ★ ★ ★ HIGHLIGHTS — Those of you who buy the 1962 Volkswagens, soon to hit the showrooms, will get something previous VS owners have wanted for a long time—a gas gauge. This is the only 1962 VW change ... watch for a two-story office building to be constructed in the vicinity of SW 75th St. and Red Road. It will resemble a residence, but in reality be a professional building ... A new state bank, with most of the arrangements made, will be constructed just east of a First Federal Savings and Loan Assn. building in the 8700 block of South Dixie Highway, Kendall.
