Southwest Grid Schedule Released

WEST of the City Limits with Ron Levitt

THINGS TO WATCH FOR: Weather bureau indicates August will be about as dry as July was this year. Like July, this month could bring less than two inches of rainfall. And we're supposed to be in the rainy season! Dade school children who haven't registered for the coming school year must do so by Aug. 31. Incoming first graders must have a birth certificate to be shown at registration. Watch for a new crackdown on drivers riding around town without driver's licenses. Senior Metro Judge Jack Turner levied a 70 day sentence for a violator and said the next time it would be six months in the jug! City of Miami takes action Sept. 7 on an ordinance which would exempt fallout shelters from current zoning restrictions. Similar proposals are being made so that zoning may be changed to allow shelters throughout Dade County. Meanwhile, several concerns are popping up in the area which are in the business of building the shelters. Backers are hoping the success of the current Mae West show at the Coconut Grove Theater will save legitimate therater in the Miami area. If that show flops, (financially, that is), the new operators of the theater might have second thoughts about slating a winter season of plays. MISCELLANEOUS MEMOS: South Miami Lions slating a public chicken barbeque at 7310 SW 62nd Pl. Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Profits go toward Lion's charitable projects... Richard Paul Janero's "Inferno" now in its final stage of rehearsal will open Monday at Stuido M Playhouse in the Gables... Coral Way Jewish Center will hold its annual membership dance Saturday... Stan Bloom, of 8301 SW 13th Terr., is president of another of the clubs blossoming out around town. This one is called the "Playmates"... St. Matthew's Episcopal Church is the site for Spanish lessons starting Sept. 11. Classes in conversational Spanish there will be taught by a Dade County Board of Education instructor. Those interested can call Mrs. Marian Bellows, MO 5-1676... According to First Research Corp. here, as of 1:05 a.m. yesterday, the county has a population of one million persons... Local restauranteer is trying to set up combination coffee house and art gallery in The Grove, but still hasn't found the site or the backing. Eleven Floridians will receive awards Aug. 22 from the Freedoms Foundation, Valley Forge, Pa. Winners are still secret... Note to dance enthusiasts; Glen and Aline Temple, dance team at Westbrooke CC, write from Europe that the cha-cha is on the wane and that the new dance sensation is the La Pachanga... If you can't find a roller coaster in town, why not try riding on Galloway Road? Enough pocks and bumps on that street to give you a roller coaster effect!

House Building Is on Rise Again In Southwest Area

Construction of new homes in the Southwest section, in a doldrum for the past several months, showed definite signs of picking up last week when more than 100 permits for homes were issued. Leading the list of builders was South Miami Heights Manor which received a total of 84 permits for homes in that Southwest Dade subdivision. The one-story CBS three-bedroom one and two-bath homes range in price from $11,472 down to $10,512, excluding land values which are not included in building permit totals. F&R Homes Corp. took out 22 permits in their Southern Estates subdivision. These homes range from $10,704 down to $8,480, also not including lot values. Snapper Creek Homes has applied for 10 permits for homes in the Snapper Creek Park subdivision. First Southern Improvement Corp. has applied for permits on 19 homes in Continental Homes subdivision and Hotchkiss-Courtelis Construction Co. has applied for eight permits in Coral Park Estates. Previously reported and adding to construction activity near Palmetto Expressway and N. Kendall Drive is the multi-million-dollar Burdines department store. Soon to be constructed are three additions to the Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club.

Stadium's First Tilt CG-Palmetto

At least 20 football games, possibly more, will be played at the Coral Gables Stadium, Coral Way at SW 73rd Avenue, this fall, with Coral Gables High School playing only four of its home games there. According to Jim Barney, stadium director, first game in the stadium will be played Friday night, Sept. 15, between Coral Gables and Palmetto High Schools. The stadium's tenative schedule calls for 13 other games, including the Thanksgiving Day Coral Gables-Southwest Homecoming Day game. Other games to be played by Coral Gables on the Coral Way field are North Miami, Thursday night, Sept. 28; and Jacksonville Jax, Thursday, Oct. 5. Southwest High School will play six of its games at the stadium, Palmetto High will play six also, and Christopher Columbus Catholic Boys High School will play seven games there. Last game to be played in the stadium this fall will be the Junior Orange Bowl game, Wednesday, Dec. 27. Barney said that crews were already at work at the field mowing the turf, painting some of the bleachers, and doing other odd jobs that would put the field in use by the day of the first game. Thanks to an $8,000 appropriation from Metro the stadium will be able to put the field in "playable condition." There was extensive damage done by Hurricane Donna last year. Southwest civic clubs have pledged another $925. There will be no other improvements on the stadium in preparation for the coming season, said Barney. "We're just grateful to have the money to fix the stadium up the way we are." Here is the 1961 schedule of games to be played in the Coral Gables Stadium: Sept. 15, 8 p.m. - Palmetto-Coral Gables. | Sept. 16, 8 p.m. - Christopher Columbus-Seacrest. | Sept. 22, 8 p.m. - Palmetto-Vero Beach. | Sept. 23, 8 p.m. - Southwest-Miami Beach. | Sept. 28, 8 p.m. - Coral Gables-North Miami. | Sept. 29, 8 p.m. - Christopher Columbus-Norland. | Sept. 30, 8 p.m. - Southwest-Curley. | Oct. 5, 8 p.m. - Coral Gables-Jacksonville Jax. | Oct. 7, 8 p.m. - Southwest-Palmetto. | Oct. 14, 8 p.m. - Southwest-Hialeah. | Oct. 28, 8 p.m. - Christopher Columbus-Miami Beach. | Nov. 2, 8 p.m. - Palmetto-Stranahan. | Nov. 4, 8 p.m. - Southwest - Christopher Columbus. | Nov. 10, 8 p.m. - Palmetto-Christopher Columbus. | Nov. 11, 8 p.m. - Southwest-Miami Jackson. | Nov. 17, 8 p.m. - Christopher Columbus-South Dade. | Nov. 18, 8 p.m. - Palmetto-Key West. | Nov. 22, 8 p.m. - Christopher Columbus-Curley. | Nov. 23, 8 p.m. - Coral Gables-Southwest. | Dec. 27, 8 p.m. - Junior Orange Bowl Game.

Phone Changes Scheduled In Sept. May Affect You

Southern Bell Telephone Co., beginning Sept. 24, will start changing greater Miami telephone numbers to seven numerals replacing the present combination of two letters and five numerals. "Actually, only the first two digits of telephone numbers will be affected since the new numbers will correspond to the old letters on telephone dials," District Manager W. L. Gale explained. Numbers in other central offices will continue to be changed gradually until the entire Greater Miami Exchange will carry the new system. There is no indication of the time involved before the entire changeover. Gale explained the changing of telephone numbers is in keeping with the new nationwide numbering plan devised by the Bell System. The present letters and number system will not allow for future growth. "To be exact, all number calling (ANC) increased the available combination of central office codes from 540 to 800 which ought to carry us through the 20th century," Gale said. The new plan would aid the use of direct distance dialing, (See Phone, page 5)

The South Miami Recreation Department will begin registration for tackle football this Saturday, from nine until noon, at the South Miami Field Greenhouse, 6750 SW 60th St. Registration will continue Monday through Friday, August 21 through 25. Old players as well as new must show proof of age by birth certificate. There is a $3 fee for insurance also required. Supervisors will be in attendance for registration. There are three different age and weight divisions, from ages nine through 16, and weights beginning at 95 lbs.

54 Certificates Shenandoah Readers Honored

Fifty-four children read books entitling them to certificates in the Summer Reading Club at the Shenandoah Branch of the Miami Public Library, 2111 SW 19th Street. The theme chosen for this year's Reading Club was "Get a Line on Good Reading." Each child was represented by a fishing boat pinned on a large blue poster. Each book read by the child was written on a colored fish suspended on a fishing line from the boat. A "Reading Record" of each book report was kept, and each reader who had read eight books or more during the eight week duration of the club was awarded a certificate. Mrs. Ines Pages, children's librarian of the Shenandoah Branch Library, was in charge of the activities which stressed individual attention and reading guidance. The Summer Reading Club awards for the Miami Public Library System were presented in a special program held at Bayfront Park Auditorium yesterday (Wednesday), at 10:30 a.m. Dr. Herbert S. Zim, well known author of children's science books, was the speaker. At the Shenandoah Branch 116 children read one or more books.
