South Miami Roundup
with Ed Knight DADELAND SHOPPING Center, that long - planned, long - rumored and forever-promised oasis at the junction of South Dixie Highway, Palmetto Expressway and North Kendall Dr. is about to be built. I KNOW IT'S so because one of the dailies on Sunday, Aug. 6, published two pictures and nearly 24 inches of type on Dadeland. And now we all know what's going on. ONE OF THE pictures was of Burdine's, the hub store for the center. The other picture showed eight people standing or sitting with big smiles on their faces looking over the center plans. FOR SOME reason, people who plan shopping centers are always happy people. Apparently they haven't a worry in the world. The picture clearly shows this. Perhaps they're happy because the plans are complete, the contractor has been chosen and the groundbreaking was held last week. AT ANY RATE, if they're happy, I'll be happy too and go along with the whole thing. Maybe they're happy because they have about 50 tenants already signed up and probably oodles more approaching the dotted line. OR MAYBE THEY'RE happy because the roster of signed tenants reads like a listing of Miracle Mile merchants. And Miracle Mile has some of the best. There is Modernage, Silverberg's, Inc. (for the life of me, I don't know what Silverberg sells), Barefoot Mailman, The Hub, A.S. Beck, Paris Hats and Hartley's. AND DON'T forget Baker's Shoes, Sound Box, Inc., Lillie Rubin, Swim 'n' Sport Shops, Eddie Stephens, The Pampered Lady, 5-7-9 shops, Pilgrims, Tiny Town, Slack Bar of Dadeland, The Casual Shop, Lane Bryant, Nankin Red Cross Shoes and Mayor's Jewelers. THIS IS just a partial list. But it'll grow as the buildings begin to rise. The center will have parking for some 4,000 cars and you won't find a parking meter on the entire 70 acres. This will be a relief to plenty of you who have gotten overparking tickets on Miracle Mile or Ponce de Leon Boulevard in Coral Gables. FRANKLY, I don't see how our happy planners could miss. Most of the clientele will come from South Dixie Highway and Palmetto Expressway. Some will come from North Kendall Drive. It's a natural. And I for one will be glad when 1962 rolls around so I can browse around Dadeland. MAIN QUESTION to most merchants in South Miami and Coral Gables is how Dadeland will affect them. Naturally no one knows for sure, but it's bound to cut into Miracle Mile business. It's still a fight getting into and out of Coral Gables and there are still parking meters (regularly checked) in the Gables. ASIDE FROM THIS is that while Coral Gables gets much of its business from South and West Dade, the only superhighway leading into Coral Gables is South Dixie Highway. Coral Way and Bird Road are bottle-necks as far as most West and South Dade residents are concerned. And this may have a great effect upon future business in the Gables from west and south Dadeites. SOUTH MIAMI, small but decidedly resourceful, has fewer prestige merchants than does Coral Gables. For this reason, South Miami may not be hurt as much by Dadeland, as Coral Gables. ACTUALLY, in South Miami, optimism is beginning to win out over pessimism. For a while there some of the merchants were afraid to mention the name Dadeland. Now the word is that Dadeland may bring more business to South Miami than the city would have had otherwise. AND IT figures, too. Suppose a family lives in Cutler Ridge. Instead of shopping at Cutler Ridge Shopping Center, the Mrs. might travel up to Dadeland. While there, she might travel a little farther to South Miami for a doctor, an attorney or a realtor. FROM THE Palmetto Expressway, South Miami is only a matter of blocks. But Sunset Drive from the expressway into the city must be repaired. South Miami's city fathers, long aware of this, have bugged the county for months. WHILE DADELAND is destined to become a sea of merchants, South Miami's future lies with office buildings and the people who could occupy them. South Miami also could become a city of fine restaurants. But time will decide this. Highways are the gateway to prosperity now. And South Miami straddles one of the biggest. This cannot be said for Coral Gables.
Phone Work Will Mean New Numbers for Many
(Continued from page 1) since many central office names in distant cities are unfamiliar and are easily misspelled. There will be no more confusion between the letter "O" and the number "0" and between the letter "I" and the figure "1". Specific advantages cited for the "ANC" system include easier, faster and more accurate dialing. Only 7,230 of the new listings will appear initially in the September Telephone Directory. These include 6,200 phones served by two new central offices, labeled 271 and 821 in the Southwest section and Hialeah, respectively. Thereafter, the all - number listing will appear in subsequent directory issues after ANC numbers are assigned when new service is installed or telephones are transferred. Another 1,030 telephones presently having Plaza prefixes will be served from the Oxford Central Office, but will appear in the directory with all-numeral "691" prefix. In the meantime, subscribers will find their bills keyed to the new all-numeral numbers. Important changes for long distance users, also scheduled on the Sept. 24 date. These include dialing "1" instead of "112" to reach direct distance dialing equipment. In Canal, Cedar and Oxford Central Offices, one and two-party subscribers will no longer need to give the calling telephone number to the operator after such a call is dialed. It will be recorded automatically as will all numbers from one and two party calling telephones when equipment modifications in other telephone central offices are finished early next year.
