Mr. Davis Would Not Move Without Tony

By JOE MORRIS Correspondent | Tony Petrilli turned the '61 white Cadillac into the driveway at 9555 Old Cutler Rd. The big green eagle head, mounted on the hood, gazed of [?the?] big house opened. Arthur Vining Davis, schedule-conscious as ever at 94, walked to the car and settled comfortably on the back seat. Tony, a 10-year resident of the Gables, 6901 Mentone, and Vining Davis where he's going, chauffeured down U.S. 'toward Miami as fast as the law allowed . . . and sometimes a little faster. "[?I?] drive fast because the boss likes it but I'm a very careful driver," Tony said later as we stood by the car talking about his life "on the job." "Last week I paid a $10 fine for speeding. The first ticket we've gotten in two years. But in all my days of driving Mr. Davis I've only had one accident. It wasn't my fault and I was completely exonerated." He smiled when he added, "the total damage was a 25 cent blinker bulb that had to be replaced." Then Tony's thoughts went back in time. "I was the mechanic and service manager for Willys-Overland in Pittsburgh in 1916 when I first met Mr. Davis. "He had a 1915 Willys Knight. It was always hard to start and he had to call a mechanic every time he wanted to take a ride. "All I ever did when I went on a call was to file the magneto points; then it ran fine. "Finally he offered me a full time job of starting the car and being his personal chauffeur. And I've been doing it ever since." He looked at the eaglehead with pride. It looked back at him. "That symbol," he said, has been on every one of Mr. Davis' personal cars since his wife admired one on a car in Rome, Italy in 1920. "The original head is on the car we keep in New York. I fixed it with a bulb and wired it to light up so the car could be easily spotted when I had to wait in line after the opera or some fashionable social function. "The Vanderbilts, Whitneys and Morgans had emblems or identifications on their cars too but the Davis eagle stood out more than all the others." Tony pulled out his watch. It looked like an old timer with its big black figures. "The boss will be coming out in four minutes," he announced. Then before he said goodbye, he remarked, "My father gave me this Hamilton watch when I was fifteen. It's very accurate. It has to be. If I'm one minute late I'll get bawled out. I've never been bawled out yet — not for being late anyway." Tony will be 70 years old in December. His hair is thinning and greying a little faster. But his face is unwrinkled. His perfect teeth are all his own. His brown eyes twinkled as he talked — about his wife Bessie — his nine grandchildren — the job and days gone by. And he's confident that he has many a mile yet to drive with The Boss. | -Staff photo by Raymond Long | THE CHAUFFEUR & THE EAGLE
