You've Got to Pick a Line; He's a Determined Reformist
By PHILLIPS RUSSELL Correspondent The recent outbreak of airplane hijacking is, to our mind, a plain case of suggestion, so plain, in fact, that it offers a warning that might even be heeded by the TV industry. To "suggest," says the dictionary, is to put something in the mind (an idea, hint, or example). When the hijacking of planes became a sort of tit for tat game with Cuba, it might have been surmised that the example would be followed in unsuspected areas. And it can be further surmised now that the practice is not scotched and will be further copied, despite drastic laws. Drastic laws, for instance, have not stopped the practice of murder. Nor is it to be supposed that arming airplane crews will automatically solve the problem. Who wants to be drawn into a gun battle in an airplane? Even TV producers are learning something about the danger of bad examples. Hal Humphrey, the columnist, says a proposed series of pictures was to have begun with the killing of a character who had got himself disliked. "Then a truckload of garbage was dumped on him, some gasoline was poured over the garbage, and a match tossed on the whole heap." How is that for a dish to set before a million viewers largely made up of teenagers? Luckily the episode was cut out as likely to craw criticism. That a suggested idea can have a powerful effect on unstable or impressionable minds is not new. What we do not yet know is how far an idea can be carried by means of pictures. Words, oral or printed, have a certain effect, but as a rule they must be repeated many times. One time may suffice for a picture.

Times Staffer Featured
Raymond Lang, a reporter and photographer for the Times, has one of his photographs featured on the front page of the Aug. 5 Publishers' Auxiliary. The Auxiliary is one of the leading trade papers of the newspaper industry and is published weekly. Lang's photograph is of three children splashing in Venetian Pools and is unusual for the sparkle effect achieved in the water. The Auxiliary commented that it expects to run more of young Lang's work. A 23-year-old native of Miami, he has been with the Times for two years, joining the staff while a senior at the University of Miami. His camera work is entirely self-taught since joining the newspaper. He was praised by the Times' editor and publisher, Rolfe Neill, for the imagination brought to photographic subjects. The Auxiliary, after looking at some of his work, commented: "Lang is never flustered by seemingly dull, routine assignments."
