The Summer-Grams Again

Making summer vacationists want to spend their leisure days in Florida is the worthy purpose behind the Florida Power and Light Company's annual "Summer-Gram" campaign, which will begin here on June 7th. Every citizen, firm, civic club and other organization in Coral Gables is invited to cooperate in this effective plan, which since 1937 has brought an increasing number of summer visitors to our community and other towns in the state. The "Sunshine Service" organization has prepared picture postcards, showing attractive scenes in this area, which the company will mail to addresses in northern states, Cuba and Canada. The cards will be available at the local Florida Power and Light office, free of charge and the company will pay the postage. The only cooperative effort required from our citizens is that they address the cards to their friends and acquaintances out of the state; the company will mail them. Since its inauguration four years ago, the "Summer-Gram" campaign has attracted nationwide interest and has been a definite aid in building Florida's summer visitor business. As residents of northern states become better informed about the comfortable weather, economical living conditions and many pleasures to be enjoyed in Florida's communities during the summer months, they come in greater numbers each summer, until now their patronage is a big factor in the stabilization of Florida's year-round business figures. Some communities have even become more popular as summer resorts than as winter rendezvous. William D. Fuller, Manager of the company's office here, stated, "In addition to addressing these cards, our citizens, we hope, will be inspired to send their out-of-state friends other reminders, such as local newspapers, literature, snapshots and other facts about our community, which may persuade others to come here not only for a vacation but for a permanent home, possibly to establish business here. Think what a tremendous effect it would have, if every one of us would send out one letter a month to some northern friend boosting our town and urging him to settle here."

Mayes

(Continued from Page One) Coral Gables since 1931 and being interested in Civic Improvement, I have always been active in many civic and service organizations. Although I am not now and have never been a member of the Coral Gables Taxpayers Association, I was endorsed by that organization soon after announcing my candidacy. I appreciate that endorsement and hereby acknowledge the same. I wish to thank the members of the Taxpayers Association, as well as my many loyal friends outside of that organization for the support they are giving me during this campaign. I have made no secret commitment to any person or group of persons, nor have I been asked to make any. My sole and only pledge I hereby make to the people as a whole—That I will perform the duties of my office to the best of my ability, using at all times and in regard to all matters, my free and unbiased judgment, and that I will devote such time to the office as its duties require. I believe in the operation of the City Government in strict accordance with the terms of the City Charter. The record of our present City Manager is an enviable one and my election will cause no interruption in his achievements. Believing that practical economy should be exercised in all of the phases of City management and operation, I will give due attention to the fiscal affairs of our city. Being a college graduate myself, I have grown to think of the University of Miami, as my adopted Alma Mater. I thoroughly realize its cultural advantages to our community and shall give my full co-operation to it and its future expansion. If any voter does not know me personally, I hope he will inquire of his friends or neighbors as to my capabilities for office. THOMAS C. MAYES

Park

(Continued from Page One) FOR the TAX DODGERS, not the Taxpayers; the latter's taxes are raised in direct proportion to the taxes dodged by others. The "slate" of the pseudo-Taxpayers Association is silent on this. Coral Gables is decidedly backward in park and playground facilities; it has about 1-16th of such area required by standard city planning. I'm for (1) numerous small parks and playgrounds in appropriate areas—give the kids a break! (2) A small park or parks adjacent to the business section, with usual facilities for games to occupy the time of our elderly winter visitors, such as they find in other Florida tourist towns. If we want tourists, aim to please them! Give the customers as well as the business men and apartment owners a break! We must BUY NOW while land is cheap; the cost won't be great, the returns large. I'm against parking-meters, to which Miami resorted to solve parking congestion. Our correct solution is to provide NOW some public free parking lots for the long-time parkers, so the in-and-out shoppers have a break.

Phillips

(Continued from Page One) Chairman of the Board or Stewards of the Coral Gables Methodist Church, that institution with buildings valued at approximately $35,000 and a credit to any community, has been erected and paid for. For several years, I was happy to serve with a number of Coral Gables' most influential citizens as a member of the Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Miami Welfare Board. My activity in greater Miami, serving as president of the Miami Chamber of Commerce; President of the Miami Rotary Club; President of the Orange Bowl Committee; President of the Florida Association of Workers for the Blind; Chairman of the Community Chest Drive, the Stadium Committee, the Salvation Army Drive, and my identification with many other worthwhile movements in this area, is well known. I am hopeful that the voters of Coral Gables will carefully and sincerely consider the records of the candidates for Mayor and then select—without prejudice or influence the man considered best fitted and qualified for the honor. Yours sincerely, W. Keith Phillips

Girls Selected In High Schools

A touch of the unusual was added to the thrill of graduation at the two local High Schools—Ponce de Leon and St. Theresa's this year, when a poll was taken among the members of the graduating classes to select the girl, who in their opinion, typified the average American Girl Graduate of 1941. At Ponce de Leon High School, this honor was conferred upon the Valedictorian, Miss Barbara-jane Mayhew, 1100 Brickell Av., Miami, and at St. Theresa the Valedictorian was also honored, Miss Marian Loeffelholz 3075 Aviation Ave. Miami. During the graduation exercises, the winners at both institutions were presented handsome traveling kits as mementos with the compliments of Breeding's Drug Stores.

For Coral Gables My Platform Is:

1—Continued support of the University of Miami, one of the greatest assets we have, culturally and financially. 2—Economy in City Government, but not "false economy" to the extent of lowering the ideals which have made Coral Gables a City of Homes. 3—Civil service and retirement benefits for City Employees. 4—Maintaining the high ideals to keep our City free from the vices which exist in other communities, and Coral Gables made a better and safer place for ourselves and our children. 5—The playground system, library facilities, and other essential civic enterprises aided in keeping with the resources of our City.
