Bell

(Continued from Page One) jected, I pledge my support to that end. Vacant property should be cleaned up and with your support it can be accomplished. I pledge my support to that end. I advocate sufficient additions to the Police force for the protection of our citizens and their property. I have never interfered with the City Manager in the performance of his duties and shall not do so. I am in favor of making our City the best managed and most beautiful in America. This can be done by applying rigid business methods to our city operations and without adding to our tax burdens. I pledge my support to that end. It would be a calamity if the University of Miami were to leave Coral Gables. I pledge my support to the University in every possible way. A statement has been circulated on behalf of one of the candidates that I voted against the University. That is a cheap and deliberate falsehood as the records in City Hall will show. I am an independent candidate so far as any pledge to the Committe Candidates is concerned. They have not at any time required any pledge on my part, I have stated my views publicly on many occasions and my every act, as a member of the City Commission has been in the interest of good government. Their support came to me unsolicited and I subscribe to their objectives which are in the sole interest of good government. I regret that some of the candidates or their supporters have resorted to the gutter for political ammunition. Race baiting hurts a candidate who sacrifices his time and energy wonder if his faithful service in the interest of all the people is appreciated. They have no place in our city elections and the thinking man and woman will repudiate these activities at the polls. I earnestly solicit your vote with a solemn promise that I shall serve you faithfully without fear or favor if elected. Thank you Mr. Moore for this opportunity to express my views. Wallace A. Bell

Cray

(Continued from Page One) talks with him, and know the good work he has done the past two years, and many of his objectives he has in mind for the future, if he can have in City Hall a board of commissioners who will not hamper him by trying to be both Commissioner and City Manager. I will not interfere in any manner whatsoever properly coming under the jurisdiction of the City Manager. This applies with particular force to the employment and placing of city employees. I will not, either directly or indirectly, attempt to influence his judgement in such matters. (b) Economy in City Government. I am a firm believer in "practical" economy. A city cannot operate without money—money which must come from the pockets of its taxpayers. That money should be judiciously expended, so the odd that necessary municipal service may be obtained at minimum cost. Necessary functions should not be sacrificed just to save a few dollars, but waste and extravagance should be completely eliminated. (c) The University. I consider the University an asset to our Community. The financial support to be accorded it should be governed and controlled solely and only by the institutions need, and the city's ability to supply same. The University should be kept out of politics, and I deplore the fact that at least one rival candidate is attempting to use it as a smoke-screen to cover up his general unfitness for the office he seeks. (d) Reduced Taxes. I am proud of the small part I have played in the effort to obtain reduced assessments in Coral Gables, Federal, State and County taxes are rapidly rising. Over these we have little control. But we CAN control our city taxes. I am firmly convinced that still further reductions are possible, and that such reductions should be made without delay. Finally, let me say that I am not indebted to, or controlled by any person or group of persons. I have made no promise of any kind or description that I will not willingly make to every citizen of Coral Gables, I am a free-born American, owing allegiance only to my God, my country and myself. Respectfully, Dennis A. Cray

Healy

(Continued from Page One) 1927?" Mr. Healy: "Yes, I live in my own home at 1034 Placentia Avenue, with my wife, Eleanor, and two swell kids, Drew and Nancy." Question: "You said you were a lawyer." Mr. Healy: "Yes, I was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1927, and maintain my own offices in Miami." Question: "Do you specialize in any particular branch of law?" Mr. Healy: "Not at this time, but for several years I gave special attention to finance and tax matters, and, believe me, that is mighty good training for the duties of a City Commissioner." Question: "Are you a perennial candidate for public office?" Mr. Healy: "Definitely not. This is my first offense, although I have been a keen student of political science. Living here for 14 years, I have made a close study of the merits and the faults of the governments of the sister cities of the Greater Miami community. And, at times, I have been able to contribute, unofficially, to many projects that seemed to me to be important to Coral Gables' future." Mr. Healy was asked if he viewed with alarm any recent or current trends in the affairs of our city. To which he answered, "Not at all. We have the finest home community in Florida. By and large, we have been comparatively free from waste, vice, graft and inefficiency". To this he added, "We must not relax, however. There are some corrections, and some very definite improvements to be sought. I propose to stand on and work for the platform I have announced, and which appears in this week's issue of the Riviera".

VOTE FOR Andrew T. 'ANDY' HEALY City Commissioner JUNE 10, 1941

Paid Political Adv.

Hopkins

(Continued from Page One) pendent candidate in every sense of the word. In all of that they are correct. I would enter office absolutely free of obligations and entanglements, and under the domination of no one. My decisions would be my own. I have not one single campaign worker whom I would have to take care of with a job. Further, I have not one single person or interest whom I would be obliged to favor or serve. I have obligations to no one. My twenty-five years of broad business experience will stand me in good stead. I was engaged for twenty years in the general insurance agency business in Philadelphia, during which time I was president and manager of two successful corporations and director of others. I have had extensive experience in investment and finance, in the management and trusteeship of several large estates and trusts. This experience and knowledge will be invaluable in helping shape the affairs of the City of Coral Gables, for the biggest single business enterprise in Coral Gables is the City of Coral Gables itself. More business and less politics in city government would be my aim. I have refrained from making election promises. Such promises are all too often made to be broken. From time to time I have stated certain broad policies and principles I would favor. They are briefly summarized in the lower part of my advertisement on page five of this paper. Turn to it. You will quickly understand the principles for which I stand. S. Duffield Hopkins, Jr.

"UNCERTAIN FEELING" FEATURE AT GROVE

High comedy at its brightest and best will be unreeled at the Grove Theatre beginning Sunday June 8th in "That Uncertain Feeling" starring Melvyn Douglas and Merle Oberon supported by Burgess Meredith. Briefly described, "That Uncertain Feeling" plots its hilarious course around the 'rival meets husband meets wife' theme. It tosses a psychoanalyst into the bosom of a family as played by Merle Oberon and Melvyn Douglas. Burgess Meredith plays the part of an eccentric pianist with a yen for surrealist art. The picture rushes off to a gay start when Miss Oberon decides to try psychoanalysis
