Slip Covers Earn Sudsy Dip After Summer Wear

A breezy fall day, a tub or washer full of bubbling suds, a taut washline in a shady spot outdoors—these and a quota of gay enthusiasm are the properties necessary for the washing of summer slip covers. If these furniture savers are of colorfast, preshrunk fabrics they are tubbable. Since their size and shape sometimes make them awkward to handle, many women like to team up with a friend or neighbor. With two women working together, it is much easier to give each piece a preliminary shaking to remove as much dust as possible before immersing it in the suds. It is also easier to hang the large bulky pieces on the line without having them drag on the ground. After removing loose dust, soak the covers for half an hour in a tub of cool sudsy water. If several patterns and colors have been used to make the different covers, soak each pattern type separately. Remove one slip cover from the soaking water and wash it thoroughly, preferably in a mechanical washer, using only moderately warm suds. The pieces are rarely small enough to permit more than one at a time in a washing machine. Wring from the washer or tub into another tub of soapy water and repeat this process until all the pieces have had the first washing. Change the wash water often enough to maintain clean lively suds. When all the pieces have been washed and then are soaking in tubs of soapy water, empty the washer or tub, make fresh suds of lukewarm temperature, and wash each piece again for a few minutes. Wring into clear wrinse water and repeat the rinses until all the soap has been removed. When hanging up to dry, use two parallel lines and pin the pieces to both of them. This facilitates drying the articles smoothly. The wisdom of this hint will be appreciated the following spring when the pieces are ironed. It is usually good sense to defer the ironing until the covers are to be used again, because they get creased and wrinkled while being stored. Draperies, bedspreads and other large summer household articles may be laundered by the same method. Care should be taken always to ascertain that the articles are made of washable fabrics.

'Down South Meat Pie' Is Feature On Mrs. Higgins 'Dinner Table

One of the most delicious sounding recipes to come our way in a long time is the "Down South Meat Pie with Cornmeal biscuit Top" contributed today to this page by Mrs. Clyde R. Higgins, well known soprano soloist and a member of the junior group of the Coral Gables Woman's Club. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins and their silver Persian cat, "Frisky" have just moved into their newly constructed home at 612 Avenue Sevilla just off Segovia. The attractive Mrs. Higgins gracefully combines housekeeping with her musical career, which demands a great deal of her time. She is soloist at the White Temple Church in Miami, one of the largest and oldest Methodist churches in South Florida. She is music chairman this year in the woman's club, a job, she well knows will demand much of her time, for the woman's club programs twice monthly at the club house, are on record for being dreams of perfection. Mrs. Higgins spent the summer in Dayton, Ohio with her mother who served this southern meat dish many times at her daughter's request and Mrs. Higgins has made it several times since her return much to her husband's delight. Mrs. Higgins says, "if a man likes a meat and vegetable concoction, made up into a pie, she just knows it's good and so say we. "Down South Meat Pie with Corn meal Biscuit Top" 2 pounds cubed raw meat (beef preferred 2 tablespoons fat 1 cup chopped onion 2 cups chopped celery 1⁄2 cup chopped green pepper 3 cups canned tomato, juice and pulp (No. 21⁄2 can) 2 tablespoons flour 2 teaspoons salt 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper 1⁄4 teaspoon paprika 1⁄2 cup whole canned corn (vacuum pack is good) Sear meat in fat until tender and brown. Remove from fat. Add onion, celery and green pepper and cook until tender. Add tomatoes gradually to flour and seasoning add vegetables and meat. Turn into a 21⁄2 quart casserole, cover and cook in oven 30 minutes. Corn Biscuit Top 11⁄4 cups scalded milk 1⁄2 cup (yellow for color) corn meal 2 cups sifted flour 21⁄2 double acting or 31⁄2 single acting teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1⁄4 cup shortening Pour hot milk on cornmeal. Cool completely. Sift flour and measure—add baking powder and sift twice. Cut in shortening, until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add cornmeal mixture. Stir only until flour is dampened. Drop by spoonfull over meat and vegetable casserole. Return to oven and bake quickly. Time 30 minutes for pie at 350 degrees F. 15 minutes at 400 degrees F. for the biscuits. Mrs. Higgins says the corn meal biscuit recipe is so good and dependable, that she often whips up a couple dozen and makes them in muffin tins for supper.

Gates Opens Radio Shop In Gables

As a result of a life-long hobby of radios, Coral Gables gained a new business this week when E. E. Gates opened his "Gates Radio Shop" at 24121⁄2 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Acting as authorized agents for R. C. A. Victor products and offering a complete line of radios, parts, records and repair work, the venture culminates a long-lived ambition of the owner. Gates, who has lived in the Miami area for 17 years, studied electrical engineering and acoustics at school, and as a qualified expert has made it his avocation. Before opening his own business, Gates was connected with theatres all over the South during the last 12 years. He owns his own home at 5879 Coral Way, which he purchased in April. "I believe that I am qualified to give Coral Gables the kind of expert radio service a town of this size demands," Gates stated. "My stock of radios, records and parts will always be complete and up-to-date."

Free Lunches For Needy Is School Goal

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 11 (Special) — Florida's school lunch program has entered the new scholastic year with a larger goal and an expanded objective. The goal is every school in the state and the objective is to provide breakfasts as well as lunches to as many needy and undernourished children as possible. Aims were outlined at a meeting here of the state-wide school lunch advisory committee, of which C. C. Codrington, State Welfare Commissioner, is chairman. Membership in the committee includes representatives of the state P.-T. A., the American Legion, the State Federation of Women's Clubs, the State Defense Council, the State Department of Public Instruction, the State Board of Health, the WPA and the State Welfare Department. Last year, it was brought out, free lunches were served to more than 100,000 public school children with more than 1,200 schools participating. Surpluses furnished free and distributed by the State Welfare Board had a fair retail value of more than half a million dollars. The procedure this year will be the same as last, representatives of the SMA and the State Welfare Board told the meeting. Schools desiring to participate will make application at the nearest district welfare board office. Those that are certified as eligible will then receive free surpluses from the nearest supply depot of the Surplus Commodity Division of the State Welfare Board.

Soap and Water to Be Mainstay Cosmetic for Fall Face Fixing

Jewel tones of a brilliance which will make last year's high colors seem like a faded rose by comparison are predicted for women's fall fashions, according to the American designers who have taken over the fashion world. American faces, on the other hand, say those same experts, will emphasize health and wholesomeness. Lipsticks will be vivid, but the rest of the make-up will speak of soap and water cleanliness much more than of applied color. There should be a glow of inner well-being which comes from good habits of eating, sleeping and exercise. Good health and cleanliness will give the natural, wholesome appearance which is to be the popular style. The fall clothes, though developed in fabrics of almost hysterical gaiety, will be tailored rather than dressy. Because of the simplicity of cut they will be easy to keep in order, and if they are made of washable fabrics they can be tubbed and pressed with the least amount of fuss.

Change Is Keynote of Fall Program of Daily Fashions

Round the clock fashions this year fall into three definite categories — morning, noon and night. You'll find yourself feeling not quite dressed if you don't make some change from your business clothes to the very soignee ensembles designers have created for after-dark dates. They rival dinner frocks in their drama and decor and will do more to make a glamor girl out of you than anything promoted by the fashion industry in many a moon. For daytime, whether you be a business girl, wife on a shopping tour, or lady of leisure lunching in town—the suit is your best set. One finds that by switching sweaters for hand-made blouses, adding a piece of costume jewelry or wearing matched accessories, the suit goes right through the day. For later you have after-dark gayety of veiled bonnets, sophisticated figure-fitted frocks and elaborate jeweled clips or "dog collars." Watch the change in your escort's regard when you blossom forth in fancy furbelows. Turbans, pillboxes, cloches and berets appear and reappear at showings. Turbans tower higher and higher and are trimmed in exotic eastern style with pearls, gold thread and jeweled embroidery.

Puffs Powder Better if Clean

To wash puffs, shake out as much excess powder as possible. Soak for half an hour in sudsy water that it lukewarm. Remove them from this water without squeezing or pressing and transfer to clean lukewarm suds. Swish through the suds until clean and rinse three or four times in clear lukewarm water. Wrap in a Turkish towel, blotting the towel against the puffs until most of the water has been removed. Let puffs dry on clean towel or cloth, turning them from time to time. When completely dry, soften them, if need be, by fingering gently.
