Gable-grams | BY HELEN REYNOLDS

Little "Tommy" Mantle was lost. He was lost Sunday night at 5 and returned to his adoring "owners," Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Mantle, 817 Avenue Almeria, before the same hour on Monday via the Humane Society. Tommy is a wire-haired terrier and a most important puppy, since he, and he alone, brought Mr. and Mrs. Mantle and Mrs. Mantle's daughter, Alice Mikee, to Coral Gables to live. The Mantles were living in Fort Myers, but because Mr. Mantle's business, he's a consulting engineer, allowed him to live anywhere, they chose Coral Gables, or rather "Tommy" did. They spent two weeks looking for a place to live after arriving and acquiring Tommy. The house had to have a garden and a yard for Tommy's sake. After buying No. 817, the Mantles remodeled and repaired it and built a dog house with the name "Tommy" over the door. Then he was gone. Frantic calls, searching, advertisements, and then through the clearing house of the Humane Society Tommy was found, for Mrs. Mantle appealed to The Riviera to help track Tommy, and The Riviera, being Humane Society-minded, made the contact. Tommy was reported to the society, the society did the rest. Now the Mantles, the Humane Society and The Riviera can celebrate National Animal Week (this week) with pride. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Homer Bang returned this week after spending most of the summer in Wilmette, Ill., then a month at Vincent's Ranch, N. C. While in North Carolina they journeyed to Blowing Rock to visit their Coral Gables neighbors, the F. Wingfield Websters, who have a summer home there—played golf with Mr. Webster and Dr. Willard Andes, and saw other Miamians—... and Wila Apps returns dSunday to her home, 3610 Anderson Road, after a delightful trip to Chicago, her former home, and other northern points—... and, Helen Doe was saying hello to all of her Coral Gables friends Monday, having just returned from a summer at Black Mountain, N. C. * * * It was "Happy Birthday" for Dr. S. G. Alderman Monday night, when a group of friends came in to wish him so at his home, 1131 Avenue Asturia. The party, a buffet supper, was given by his mother, Mrs. E. F. Alderman, and aunt, Mrs. Elinor Culbreth, and present were Dr. and Mrs. E. C. Lunsford, Dr. Roland Griffieu Miss Clara Weadman, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Brown, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Flowers, Mr. and Mrs. George Kay and Wade Harley. * * * Miss Margaret (Peggy) Beaton was getting a little worried when her second trip to the Pan American Airport last Tuesday to meet her vacationing sister, Miss Kay Beaton, returning from Mexico City, was fruitless and the "flying" Kay was still in the air, so to speak. But Miss Beaton was having an eventful trip and a glorious time. After taking in all of the regular tourist sights—Meridan, etc., she flew on to Mexico City. There she saw, in addition to floating gardens and bull fights, Cary Grant, the fabulous Barbara Hutton and ex-King Carol. Returning, her plane, due to bad flying weather, was forced to return to Campeche, a few miles from Meridan, for the night. Hence the delay in scheduled return. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Max Wright of 640 Avenue San Antonio, entertained at dinner Sunday night in honor of Mrs. Wright's uncle, Colonel David Roscoe, who returned to the States after a ten-day stay in Cuba. Colonel Roscoe built up a fortune in Texas oil and is interested in the California cinema industry ... Mr. and Mrs. William Huntley in Memphis, Tenn., postcard they will attend the first football game of the season at Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind. * * * Mrs. Elsie Melanson and her mother, Mrs. Helena Elliot returned Sunday to re-open their home on Granada Boulevard for the season ... Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth N. Neese have leased the David P. Bishop, Jr., residence at 3905 Durango Street for the season. Mr. Neese, with Pan American Airways, was formerly chief pilot for an Alaskan air line. Their daughter will attend Miss Harris' school. Mr. and Mrs. Bishop and Mrs. Bishop's sister, Miss Mary Baldwin, have taken an apartment in the Douglas Entrance. * * * Ten little brownies celebrated their "flyup" ceremony and became full-fledged Girl Scouts of Troop 14 last week. Captain Lena Ortiz, 35, E/T., is the new troop leader of 14, recently re-organized and meeting now at the Little House on Fridays. Gloria Cummings is scribe, Rosemarie Maggi, treasurer and Barbara Stearns historian. Kathryn LaPointe, Frances Little and Joan Muzzy are patrol leaders. After the ceremonies, a party was in order. Special guests included Mrs. George McCaskill, Girl Scout commissioner; Mrs. Paul D. McGarry; Mrs. Bowman Hurley, Father Joseph Barry, Miss Lorna Borman, Girl Scout director, and Mrs. David Heffernan, who awarded merit pins.
