FRIDAY, NOV. [?] - THE CORAL GABLES RIVIERA - PAGE 7 -
TY-TALK By BARBARA BROWN
Never! Never has there been a game in football history to equal the Miami-Texas Tech game! At least that's the way every University of Miami student felt after the final whistle blew last Friday night. With the score Miami-6, Texas Tech-0. No one wanted to go home. Cheerleaders did cartwheels, the band members conga'd, and the crowd cheered for more. When the students finally left the stadium, they headed for the "U" Club. Down at the Coral Gables Country Club Girls took advantage of the cooler weather to wear some of their new winter clother. Mimi Marquette was success itself in cardinal red corduroy trimmed with miniature gold awards. Her escort was Lee Bailey from Kentucky who is visiting Bill Landrum. Rip O'Reilly's date was Betty Hatch, who wore a natural color dress with a brown hat. Bobbie Crim, wearing a tan wool suit with green and black accessories, was celebrating the victory success with Hank Grass. Howard Hansen and Betti Ann Westerdahl were making merry together at the dance. Betti Ann wore a green and brown plaid skirt with yellow wool jacket and green hat. The main subject of conversation during intermissions was-can't you guess-Miami's victory. It didn't take the newly arrived English cadets long to get accustomed to American tradition. There were two rows of them in the freshman section cheering and helping with the card stunts as if they had been watching football games instead of rugby, all their lives. Their cheers were in the good old English style - "Blawck those Cowboys!" Muriel Smith, the new drum majorette of the University of Miami band, will hold that position for the next four years since she has been awarded a full four-year scholarship for her twirling and acrobatics. She what she is performing on the field for turning complete flips in the air is part of her routine. Muriel graduated from Ponce de Leon High School last June where she was leader of the school drills. Alvalyn Boege and Jo Thomas are the two co-eds whom you will see dressed in all their finery sitting on the football bench this Friday night, for they are to be the sponsors of the West Virginia Wesleyan game. All girls on campus are on pins and needles trying to find out who has been chosen to rule as Queen of the Homecoming Game. But no one will know until the lucky lady's name is announced at the tea dance, November 14, at the Gables Country Club. In the meantime, all sorority girls are keeping their fingers crossed in the hopes that their particular candidate will win. Speaking of sororities, the pledge classes are getting down to work with their new officers. Leaders of the Zeta Tau Alpha pledges are Mildred Andre, president; Mary Ruth Hayes, vice-president; and Genny O'Keefe, treasurer; Chi Omega pledges elected Barbara Browne, president; Dot Parmelee, secretary, and Sue Ogden, treasurer. Hitler Will Fail in Russia Opinion of Maurice Hindus
By HELENE ZIMMERMAN (Special to The Riviera) GAINESVILLE, GA., Nov. 6--"What Is Happening To Russia" was the subject of the lecture given by Maurice Hindus in the Brenau auditorium this week. Mr. Hindus, who is a well-known writer, lecturer, and commentator and who for eighteen years has traveled around Europe spoke before a large crowd made up of Brenau girls, faculty members, and citizens of Gainesville. Hindus maintained that Adolf Hitler will never conquer Russia. Although he might occupy parts of Russia, it will be impossible for him to conquer this large nation. There are many reasons for this he stated, the first and most important one being the size of Russia. This held true in the days of Napoleon as it does today. The second reason is that Russia is a revolutionary country; the people are hardened to the conditions and intend to fight to the finish. His third reason is that Hitler will more than likely find Russia a ruinid nation as a reuslts will probably hit Russia this winter .The Russians have destroyed their own supplies to keep them from falling into the hands of the enemy. Mr. Hindus stated that the outcome of this war will have a great effect on our lives. "Whatever a country has a revolution it does something to the minds of the people and the war now will effect the future a great deal," he said. "In Russia the government is the sole ruler. Everyone works for the government no matter what the type of work may be," Hindus told his audience. "This country is not a militaristic nation, but will be if Hitler occupies England. Then we, too, will grow up with an emphasis on dying as well as on living," he said. "Hitler is destroying the culture of the conquered countries and we must do everything in our power to keep him from occupying England," Hindus pointed out. Hindus' answer to the question, "Will Hitler Conquer Russia?" is "no". There are three hundred million Slavs and only eighty million Germans in the world today. Therefore it will be impossible for him to conquer Russia, is his contention.
