Hunting Season Causes Hike in Fire Losses

Fire reports issued by the Florida Forest and Park Service for the first three months of the fiscal year show a total of 1936 acres burned by 188 fires on protected lands. Damage is estimated at $2,706.00 and the loss at one-half of one per cent of the total acreage under protection. This is about the normal loss for the first quarter. The heaviest fire losses begin with the hunting season when sportsmen are careless with warming fires, matches, and burning tobacco. It ends with pasture burns in March. More than forty percent of the loss reported so far this year has occured in Dade County, which also accounts for seventeen percent of the fires. Approximately a third of the total number of fires thus far have been reported from counties west of the Apalachicola River. State Fire Control Chief, O. R. Douglass, states that 5,069, 115 acres, or approximately one-fourth of the State and privately owned forest land in Florida is listed for fire control at this time.

Mills Is Appointed Leader Of Christmas Seal Campaign

Continued from Page 1 emy, causing ill health and death, and draining needed national resources. Even in peace time, tuberculosis leads numerically in the causes of death between the ages of 15 and 45. Of the 60,000 people who die every year in the United States from this cause, 30,000 are in this age group. In other words, tuberculosis is most deadly in that very group which is most vital for the military defense of the nation, whether it be in our armed forces, or in the ranks of vital industry. That death rate, war may seriously step up. "I believe Christmas Seals in years past have helped fight a good fight. This year, the purchase of the Seals will appeal to every patriotic as well as to every humanitarian impulse. "This is one way in which every individual in Dade County can declare himself on the health problems of the community-can take some active part in meeting those problems. I feel confident in predicting that the Christmas Seal Sale will receive more generous support this year than any year in the past." Committee members now are being chosen by Commander Mills who will announce further detailed plans for the drive with in the next ten days.

Name Group To Select Safe Driver

Safe driving on the streets of Coral Gables should become almost automatic when Charlie Tutan's safe driving committee begins to function in the effort to determine a winner in the Dodge automobile dealer's current drive. Reading like the "who's who" of motordom, with City Manager A. B. Curry as chairman, Chief of Police Lewis C. Reeve, Frank Harris, University of Miami publicity man; Mrs. Charles J. Susong, president of the Coral Gables Woman's Club; Mrs. Celia M. Smith, a past president of the B. P. W. C.; A. E. Harum, publisher of The Riviera; Charles Tutan and others yet to be announced, sitting as associate members, this committee should have little difficulty in picking the prize-winning safety idea submitted between now and January first. The winner, man, woman or child, will receive the beautiful gold safety trophy now on display at Breeding's drug store. This valuable prize will be awarded by a famous stage, screen or radio star yet to be announced, but whom rumor says, will be none other than the flashing and glamorous skating and screen star, Sonia Henie. This, however, has not been completely confirmed and is subject to change. Those interested in competing for the trophy should call or phone in to Tutan Motors for all information. Safety stickers, blue on a white background, are being distributed by Tutan employees who urge all car or truck drivers to display them as an aid to local, county and state police

Club Women Go for Chocolate Ice Box Cake in Big Way

When Mrs. George Corrigan takes time out, you know she works hard for the Woman's club of which she is vice-president and ways and means chairman, also the Ponce de Leon P.-T.A., of which she is publicity chairman, she gives a grand luncheon for her friends. At her bridge club party Friday and one extra table she served a delicious chicken salad and cohocolate ice box cake. The recipe for the ice box cake is given here below and Mrs. Corrigan said every one of her twelve guests but one, ate the cake and enjoyed it. That one, yes, you guessed it, she was on a diet, no sweets. Aside from her club work which takes almost all of her time Mrs. Corrigan is an officer in the Coral Gables Music Club and a talented pianist. She is especially fond of young musicians and looses no time to boost the club's scholarship boy, Douglas Bruner who really has a splendid baritone voice and is a student at the University of Miami. On Friday when Mrs. Corrigan entertained her bridge eight and one extra table she had to double her chocolate ice box recipe for the original one given here will only serve 6. NAVY COURTMEN PRACTICE BASKETBALL ON SHIPBOARD

Perfect physical fitness is required of sailors in the U. S. Navy and Naval Reserve. Excellent athletic facilities are provided both afloat and ashore. Pictured above are bluejackets on the aircraft tender U.S.S. Wright holding basketball practice on shipboard. Almost every ship in the U. S. Navy has its own basketball team. Rivalry among the crews of the various crafts runs high. In addition to basketball-football, baseball, boxing, bowling, wrestling and tennis all rank high as sports with Uncle Sam's sailors. Organized intrafleet competitions are held for most sports. Trophies and individual awards usually are presented to the championship winning teams and players.

A price on their heads, Belle and Sam Starr go recklessly on in "Belle Starr," the Fox production in technicolor about the famous bandit queen of the Ozarks, which is opening at the Grove this Sunday. Gene Tierney and Randolph Scott are seen as Belle and Sam.

Debunker No. 1 Color Has Nothing to Do With the Quality of the Gasoline You Buy! The fanciest super-colossal concoction of an advertising man's imagination doesn't make one cracking and refining process better than another. It is the combination of high-grade crude oil to start and an equally fine processing method which produces the kind of gas that keeps your motor running smoothly, powerfully and economically. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear . . . regardless of process. Sinclair oil and gas was started from "silk." The United States Bureau of Standards will verify the above facts.
